Nets, Hawks Agree To Terms Of Joe Johnson Deal
July 2 at 4:18pm CST By Chuck Myron
The Nets and Hawks have agreed to terms on a trade that would send Joe Johnson to Brooklyn, tweets Chris Broussard of ESPN.com, who says the deal is contingent on Deron Williams agreeing to return to the Nets. However, David Aldridge of TNT says the Nets would agree to the deal regardless of Williams' status (Twitter link). Broussard adds that the deal would put the Nets out of the running of Dwight Howard, as it wouldn't leave enough cap room.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports tweets that the deal would send Jordan Williams, Johan Petro, Jordan Farmar, and Anthony Morrow to Atlanta, along with DeShawn Stevenson in a sign-and-trade, with Johnson heading to Brooklyn. David Aldridge of TNT adds that the Hawks would also get a 2013 protected first-round pick the Nets acquired from the Rockets (Twitter link).
While this may take the Nets out of the equation for D12, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel notes that it would put Josh Smith and Morrow, two of Howard's best friends, on the same team. As for Williams, the Nets are meeting with him right now, Broussard tweets, and informing him of the trade. Stefan Bondy says the deal would put the Nets in a better position to win now and in the future than the Mavericks, a point the Nets are surely stressing in the meeting.

My gut feeling is that this deal does go down that Dwight will give the green light to be traded to the Lakers and also sign an extension with them... this would be his best option.

I'm going to hold off thinking anything about this right now... It's just way too confusing to be real...
There's got to be a trick in there somewhere... These guys aren't THAT short sighted are they?
*Edit: Nevermind:
Chris Broussard @Chris_Broussard
Nets, of course, would've preferred to get Dwight, but Magic refused to engage in trade talks. Source: 'They didn't want to dance with us.'
Chris Broussard @Chris_Broussard
Source on Nets moving on from possibility of getting Dwight: "Dwight blew it in March'' when he waived opt-out clause.

Howard is a cancer and will KILL team chemistry... Let him stay in Orlando or go to Houston and back up Bynum in the All Star game...

I'd almost be willing to bet this means Howard and DWIll to the Nets is a done deal, as wacky as that seems.
How you figure that?

if lakers want howard, now is the time to move on him. magic wont get a better offer than bynum for howard. though, with the news of jj in brooklyn, i think theres a less of a chance he signs an extension when traded. with jj there, most likely deron will resign and dwight can just play out this season and sign with the nets in the offseason.
with all that being said, i still think its worth the gamble. no big name free agent has left LA after spending a season with us.

Not figuring at all, just can't believe they did this with no plan for Dwight.

This trade isn't nearly interesting enough to warrant its own thread on our board.

DAL is really the only option now, and Cuban's pitch would have to be "we will suck this year and renounce all of our players other than Dirk, then recruit Dwight next year." Doubt that would sway DWill to sign.
I love the Russian's attitude, basically serving notice to the rest of the league that he won't wait for players regardless of talent level. You have to respect that stance (whether it will ultimately work is another story).

Be tough to sign D12 with D-Will, JJ, Crash, and Lopez all under contract.

i do agree with you that the nets have bloated contract after bloated contract but if dwight wants to be a net, im sure billy king will make his first sane decision as a GM in the past few seasons and move the appropriate contracts in order to sign dwight. but i hope before that even becomes an option, the lakers have dwight signed and sealed in LA.

If the Lakers can deal Pau Gasol to the Hawks now for Josh Smith & Anthony Morrow (supposedly two of Howard's best friends) along with Terrance Jones and/or a 2013 First Round Pick the Lakers would then look really good to Dwight. I'd also like Morrow as the Lakers 3pt specialist off the bench which they sorely need, not to mention that they need a backup SG anyways.
Dwight Howard
Josh Smith
Metta World Peace (or sign Michael Beasley and start him)
Kobe Bryant
Ramon Sessions

send him elsewhere, I wouldn't want to see him here and putting our team/mgmt through the same garbage he is putting Orl. through.

To me that indicates the Nets never had a shot for D12, and are just desperate to improve the talent on their team without regard of their salary cap situation..not that they still have a plan to obtain him.

I must admit a starting 5 of...
Brook Lopez
Free Agent PF
Gerald Wallace
Joe Johnson
Deron Williams
...is pretty damn good!

Yeah, that seems pretty clear now... But at the time this went down, we had no idea they had no chance, in fact I thought they had the best chance...
Came out of no where for me.

Sure we did. The Nets do not have the assets to get Howard - period. Which makes Howard's demand to be traded to the Nets even more perplexing. Let's assume for a moment that Deron re-signs and the Hawks trade is finalized. There is a 0.01% chance that the Nets would be able to move some combination of Gerald Wallace, Joe Johnson, Lopez or Humphries in order to obtain Howard. If Orlando takes that garbage, or the garbage that other teams would give up for those players, then good for them but I just can't see it happening.
