What now? The next moves.

Post#1 » by tugs » Thu Jul 5, 2012 1:21 am

with the acquisition of Steve Nash, the Lakers now don't have the 8.9 TPE and 2 future picks.

what now? what are the assets that they can use to make other deals? or are we contented with this one? is the Dwight drama done?

can we make more major moves? how? with what?

can we sign any more FA's? how? with what?

We can sign FA with our little mini-MLE of 3 Millions.
I guess we could try something to trade for Howard, but without adding salary is gonna be hard. For sure we need to find a 3rd team (namely Bobcats or Kings, teams with low payroll) to complete it.

Our only other 'assets' are either a Gasol or Bynum trade.

I think Howard would be the next domino. If Orlando still wants to play hardball or if Howard keeps refusing to extend here in LA then we'll keep Bynum and make them take back a max contract Brook Lopez and scraps.

There's already talk that Grant Hill is going to follow Nash here. We should probably hear about an agreement with him for the vet min pretty soon. I'm just interested to see what we can do with the mini MLE.

so it's possible that a Howard+Hedo/JRich for Bynum+MWP is still in the works then. and the assuming Grant Hill will settle with the vet min then we can use the MMLE for Antawn Jamison or is he not worth it?

I think Pau will thrive more in a Nash-led offense than Bynum that's why I'm gambling with Dwight. just hoping Steve's and Dwight's back will not be an issue (hopefully DEEP my man. not calling you out bro, just paying respect.).

btw, how many players can we sign assuming they'll be paid with a vet min salary?

hedo didnt fit in too well with nash and the suns. im fairly sure a hedo dump aint happening.

right now, orlando has no leverage to demand any salary dump from us. especially seeing as its obvious to everyone, the player they want the most is bynum

the entire trade hinges on dwight consenting to an extension

And that might have just changed with our move.

My first thought when I heard about Nash, was 'Dwight's next"...

But now the Nash move seems more like a 'Keep the Core together for one more run' move...

I hope I'm wrong but I think they may have done this because it had become clear Dwight would never sign long term here...

Either that, or it's designed to light a fire under Dwight.

Resign Sessions to a cheap 3 year deal, then amnesty Blake. Tell him he'll get a lot of minutes backing up Nash and will be able to showcase his running game with the second unit.

Resign Jordan Hill to a manageable 3 year deal. Convince him he'll be up for a bigger contract with LA once they get their big contracts off the books and let him know he'll get the main backup bigman minutes like he did during the post season.

See if we can sign Grant Hill for the vet min, then try and get Nick Young with our mini MLE.

I think whats getting lost in this is that we just gave up 4 picks. Two 1st rounders and two 2nd rounders. Is Orlando willing to accept our offer if it may have a shortage of picks all for the sake of not trading Howard to his preferred destination, getting a better player in return, and not having to pay Brook Lopez a max contract?

im not sure thats the wisest of money moves. paying blake 8 mil for play for someone else. then paying ramon on top.

we're not even sure ramon wants to stay in LA knowing he has to fight for bench minutes with steve blake

We're paying Blake so we don't have to play him, Sessions coming off the bench when Nash needs rest will be much better than Steve. We offer Ramon a cheap contract(around the same as Steve's), if he gets a better payday elsewhere then we let him walk and stick with Blake.

blake was actually outproducing ramon in the playoffs iirc

and the funny thing is, blake plays better defense than sessions as well

Blake got hot a couple games, still missed the biggest shot(wide open) that could of won us a game and potentially changed the series around against OKC.

Ramon was neutered by the coaching staff who told him to slow it down with the starters, he won't have the same problems running with the second unit. Blake's been crap for most of his tenure as a Laker, at least Ramon's performed well in half of his when he was allowed to play his style of ball.

blake got hot that same game to put the lakers up 7 points (or whatever it was) and it wasnt his fault we choked the game away and had to rely on blake in the first place
