Lakers Considering Signing Anthony TolliverWritten by Ryan Ward on 07/15/2012 in News, RumorsOne of the biggest problems the Los Angeles Lakers have to address before next season is the play off the bench. Last season, the Lakers had arguably the worst bench in the league and it showed throughout the regular season and during the NBA playoffs.
Fortunately, the Lakers were able to lockup Steve Nash for the next three years to secure the point guard position. This will be the first time the Lakers have had a dominant floor general in the backcourt in quite some time, but it will be all for nothing if they can find players to contribute in the second unit.
If the two losses in the Summer League thus far is any indication of how undependable the younger players on the squad will be, the Lakers are bound to be in trouble without some considerable upgrades before next season.
A free agent option that has recently surfaced as a possibility for the Lakers is forward Anthony Tolliver, according to Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida via Twitter:
“Until getting Rashard Lewis, Heat were looking at FA F Anthony Tolliver Teams now eyeing Tolliver: Chicago Dallas Cleveland Lakers Minnesota”Last season, Tolliver averaged 4.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 27-year-old forward didn’t get much time in a crowded frontcourt in Minnesota, and will be looking to move on via free agency this summer.
The signing of Tolliver may be strictly a backup plan for the Lakers as he isn’t exactly a game-changer. If the potential free agent signings of Grant Hill, Antawn Jamison, Jordan Hill and Jermaine O’Neal fall through, Tolliver might become the next option.
There’s no question that both of the Jordan Hill, Jamison and O’Neal are much better options at forward, but the Lakers are extremely limited in terms of signing free agents with an inability to pay high-dollar amounts for players.
At this point in time, Grant Hill signing a one-year deal with the Lakers to play alongside Steve Nash appears to be the most likely scenario. Even if Hill comes into the fold in Los Angeles, the Lakers will need one or two more free agents to help bolster the bench. Jamison is said to be considering his options with the Lakers being a serious candidate to sign him.
As for Jordan Hill, it is uncertain if he’ll return as he continues to gauge interest around the league. The Lakers would love to have him back and for good reason after posting impressive numbers during the playoffs, but it remains to be seen if the two sides can come to an agreement.

If I recall Tolliver has pretty nice range. Looks like the lakers are targeting guys that can knock down perimeter shots.

firstly keep Hill,
secondly if we get Mayo for McRoberts and Blake, we could sign Tolliver

Followed Tolliver since his Spurs days... really like him... I wish they'd get him back... he's a stretch four that's actually pretty damn athletic, plays tough, active player, and is capable of some serious blocks... plays smart, doesn't seem afraid of the moment. Undersized for a PF.
Now that he's kinda established as a player, watch him become one of those playoff-sought after role-players...
If you guys sign him? Good pick-up for chemistry and floor spacing for sure...

Yep....but Ballings7 is one of the better Spur posters/fan that understands the game anyway. Anyway I think Tolliver has just been in the wrong spot the last few years, he could help us with some decent minutes. I'd take him over McRoberts any day.

Well you are alone in that area.

Both Anthony Tolliver and Shawne Williams are the Laker's best bets for cheap PF depth.
I prefer Shawne Williams, but Anthony is definitely the safer pick with so many more intangibles.
Jermaine O'Neal could also be had cheaply as C depth, but he's more of a third string insurance guy now.
I know I'm alone on this, but I'd bring back Troy Murphy as well (as a third string PF--behind Gasol and Tolliver/Williams).

Tolliver's weaknesses (lack of self-creation offense around the paint and overall size), would be covered up in a pretty structured offense like the Lakers, and with creators like Bynum/Gasol/Kobe/Nash.... but he'll give you what you want off the bench out of a big foward... the ability to shoot from outside, be an active presence defensively and around the basket, and generally play with energy. He can do what he does best off the bench.
I think he'd be a Phil Jackson role-player, in relation his shooting ability and ability to cover the court defensively with quickness, spec. in like a press.
He reminds me of a bigger James Posey, to be honest... just without the establishment Posey began to get in his last couple years with Memphis then Miami. One thing that Tolliver does have is a wing-span to make him play kind of bigger than he is in situations.
On a side note, I know Indiana told him to go home, but I'm not sure why Posey didn't get picked up by someone when he could definitely still play, from the 10-11' season.
Tolliver, Artest, and Kobe on the court at the same time would be pretty nasty defensively and intensity-wise...

thanks for the info Ballings7. was able to watch him as a Warrior and he definitely showed promise. and watching his earlier stints in Minny and he did what you just said: be active on the boards, provide floor spacing, bring energy, and be tough defensively. he reminded you of Posey but he reminds me of a more athletic and bulkier Matt Barnes.

Tolliver, Jamison, Hill isn't a bad frontcourt off the bench squad.

I agree, well said... whoever gets him will have a valuable role-player at PF off the bench.
