Do the Lakers Know What They're Doing in 2014?

I ask this question because as of now (if Howard signs for 5 year), the only contracts we'll have on the books in the summer of 2014 will be, Howard (20M) and Nash (9M).
What exactly is our franchise's plan for retooling around Howard and providing him with this amazing supporting cast? We don't really have any trade chips for good young players seeing as how we have some very overpaid guys now and i'm not sure we can get any really good young talent for an expiring Pau/Ron.
So we're banking on signing some 2014 free agents?
http://www.hoopsworld.com/2014-nba-free-agents/Besides the Miami 3 (which probably won't come to LA) this is a horrible free agent class and I don't think surrounding Dwight with Aron Afflalo and Rudy Gay will accomplish anything.
What do you guys think we can do?

Resign Kobe and Pau for vet miinimum or around 4-5min per year and sign LeBron.
Nash
Kobe
LeBron
Gasol
Howard
Bench: who cares..

I think Nash will retire after 2 seasons.

Highly doubt Lebron at this point will leave Miami for LA. Miami is probably going to turn into a LA south to a degree. Pat Riley has shown that he can put together a competitive team multiple times.

How did you miss names like Carmelo, Dirk, Granger, Deng, Amare, and Bogut?

I doubt Pau and Kobe take the vets minimum. Kobe and Pau should demand more similar to what Nash just got. They both would make more than the minimum overseas playing less games against lesser opponents and be superstars.
Too lazy to see who's available by 2014. Anyone have a list including which players are coming off their rookie contracts?

Paul George! Offer him maximum contract and hope that the Pacers did not match it...

Pau will be a 20 million dollar expiring contract next season. Lakers could always trade him by the 14 deadline for a quality player. The closer we get to those seasons the more unfolding of the lakers plans will be apparent.

Hard to say at this point... But maybe, Rudy Gay or Melo?
But I think, if Miami hasn't repeated by then, LeBron's a real possibility too.
I think there are already signs that things aren't perfect there. It all depends on Wade though, if he rides gracefully into the background... LeBron could stay... But if he starts clawing for a place in the lime-light with LeBron... That team could get blown up.
It's not really that deep a list outside of the upper 1% and they're all going to be older.

I just dont see it at this point, even if Wade declines, Miami is in the same position to reup as LA. So you got a most likely in Bosh reup and then add another piece. Miami and LA have the 2 out of 3 most dynamic players in the game right now going forward. They will be in the hunt with each other for years to come.

I see your point but I think what Kilroy was saying that LeBron may leave if they fail to win another title. Miami's window isn't as grand as everyone thinks, the NBA has been changing rapidly since LeBron got there and I think it'll only get harder to get more titles. By now they should've had 2 but missed Bosh in the Finals against the Mavs. LeBron has said that he hopes Cavs fans don't hate him in case he returns someday. That's not the kind of language you want to hear out of your superstar if you're Miami management, hell even the fans I'm sure didn't like that. I think if Miami fails to win another title I could see LeBron leaving. Maybe not for LA but who knows, if we're in that position to become a major dynasty by adding him perhaps he comes. Otherwise I wouldn't be shocked to see him return to the Cavs, whom I think would in fact take him back.

I can dig that, but after tasting his first one, I think Lebron at this point may be a changed man. Miami is becoming somewhat of an LA south. With Pat Riley out there doing his thing I can def see them retaining and getting good players just like LA has. They have the same competitive advantage with the city and bball minds as we do, only thing missing is the long history of winning.

I don't like Melo, DIrk will be a grandpa in 2 years, Amare= horrible and wouldn't want him here at 10M a year, Bogut plays the same position as our (now) best player, and I mentioned Rudy Gay who I think is better than Granger and Deng so I didn't mention them

the scenarios are endless. With only howard and nash on the books, there are tons of options from the free-agent market. For example. Chris Paul is unrestricted. 2014? Tons of Unrestricted players come open. So to ask this kind of general or broad question is difficult to answer. Because we have cooked the books just right, we have plenty of options available to us.

Of course they know what they're doing . . . look what they just pulled off
I'm not sure what it will be, but when the times comes, I'm sure the front office will do it again like they always have

I'd sign: Stuckey(7 mil per year), Kobe(8 mil per year), Sefolosha(6 mil per year), Rudy G.ay (10-13 mil per year), Pau(8 per year) and some big man subs. Maybe retain Hill(3 mil per year) and get Jason Smith (4 per sear)
PG: Nash (if he is in good shape to be starter in 2014), Stuckey
SG: Kobe, Thabo, Stuckey
SF: Rudy, Thabo
PF: Gasol, Hill, Smith
C: Howard, Hill, Smith
So.. Nash - 9 mil, Stuckey - 7 , Kobe - 8, Sefolosha - 6, Rudy - 10-13, Pau - 8, Hill - 3, Smith - 4....That would be...55-58 mil $ in 2014 season.
