OT:Longtime Lakers Fan Looking for Some Help

Post#1 » by Lehnny » Mon Oct 1, 2012 9:41 pm

Greetings my Laker brethren,

Just like every other member of the Laker fandom I am eagerly anticipating the start of the new season like a kid who found out that he’s going to get the Christmas present of his dreams, but won’t get it for another couple of months. So to fill the time, this year I’ve set myself the goal of actually understanding what’s going on when I watch basketball games.

Bit of Background: I’ve been a longtime Lakers fan growing up in Socal, pretty much since I was little kid and got to watch Kobe and Shaq destroy the rest of the league, but I’ve always been one of those semi-casual fans. You know the type, generally following the progress of the team throughout the year, catch a few games, and then watch all the playoff games. I never played basketball as a kid, so I don’t really understand the plays, and I don’t know much about the rosters of teams beyond the Heat, Miami, and the Thunder.

I figure now is about the time to start to educate myself, since I’ve got a month till actual games start up. So anyone have any recommendations on resources to look at to educate myself, which site's writers actually know what they’re talking about, who doesn’t, etc?

Note: Please don’t recommend anything that will cost me money. I’m a grad student so I have a negative income at the moment. XD

P.S. Anyone have any good recommendations for NBA/basketball podcasts? I’ve been looking for a good one to listen to while I hit the gym.

Watch some playoff game highlights on youtube. Like the 09-10 title runs.

If you want to see Kobe highlights just type in "Kobe greatest games"

Oh and buy NBA 2K13 if you play videogames.

Hmm, not so sure that's all that helpful for what I'm going for. I've already watched every playoff game for the past 10 years, I'm more interested in actually understanding the fundamentals of what's going on. I guess I'll just go for watching everything this season and see what I can pick up. Thanks for the rec. though.
