Lakers will be the real "Lob City"

Post#1 » by The Skyhook » Sun Oct 7, 2012 3:45 pm

A review of the Lakers' and Clippers' play-by-play records from every game this season by The Times showed that the Lakers have converted 110 alley-oop dunks and layups compared with 89 for their fellow Staples Center tenants. That's a 23.6% advantage for the Lakers, though they have played one more game than the Clippers heading into the teams' final regular-season meeting Wednesday.

But Bynum has been the de facto mayor of the basketball metropolis dubbed Lob City, with 76 alley-oop dunks and layups. That's almost as many as the Clippers' Jordan (48) and Griffin (37) combined.

Bynum has been the beneficiary of more than a handful of lobs from fellow Lakers big man Pau Gasol, whose 32 alley-oop assists are more than those of point guards Steve Blake (20), Sessions (two) and the recently departed Derek Fisher (seven) combined.

How good of a passer is @paugasol? Mike Brown just said, “he’s Steve Nash in the paint.” Praised Pau’s versatility. #LakersCamp

I think everybody knows just how good of an alley oop passer Steve Nash is but I think a lot of people tend to over look how good Pau Gasol is at setting up his teammates for the alley oop. The man had 32 alley oop assists in a shortened season with Bynum being his primary recipient. No knock on Bynum but Dwight Howard does a much better job of getting into position for the alley oop. Pau Gasol is going to have so much of positive impact on Dwight Howard's game this season. I think Dwight will appreciate just how much easier Gasol makes his job.

Do you think it's possible for a big man to get tired of alley oops/dunks?

I think lobs are over rated. nice once in a while. But give me a perfect flow to a fast break and a good easy lay up from a good pass from Nash. Hill, Clark, Howard and a few others will dunk. But always that chance a foot is under the basket when the play comes down and a sprain ankle could result. I pass on many lobs.

Without "Lob City" coined to the Clippers, the term flop city would have never came about. Which suits them a whole lot more.

Bynum will definitely miss those easy passes. However, he's also going to enjoy not having another big man on the floor that deserves touches on the offensive end. He'll get to be the centerpiece and shoot as much as he wants. That's something that Bynum has been yearning for more than anything else.

Phil had a take Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard too

Jackson seems to have kept a close eye on his former team and he seems intrigued by the challenges facing coach Mike Brown and his staff. The Lakers acquired both Howard and point guard Steve Nash in the offseason.

"The oil that's going to make everything kind of work, that's Pau Gasol," Jackson said. "He's the guy that can kind of make it easier for Howard to be a player inside. Pau can move around in the post and move up to the high post and he can be an outside defender that can help out in a variety of screen roll activities.

I'm really excited to see how Gasol and Howard play together. I feel that they will compliment one another much better than Gasol and Bynum did. I remember one of the best aspects on this team during our 2 title runs was how the Lakers size advantage always seemed to overwhelm teams. Lamar and Gasol were often found playing volleyball on the offensive boards. I think Dwight and Gasol can bring that back this season.
