Video: NBA on TNT rips the Hybrid Princeton Offense

Highlights:

Charles Barkley:

"I've said it before, I want my accountant from Princeton, but I don't want my offense from Princeton. There's a man taking the ball out of Steve Nash's hand. And Dwight Howard as you see, this really hurts him, if he has to set up, they're going to foul him! You don't want Dwight Howard in the half court set, because teams are just going to foul him coz he ain't a good free throw shooter."

"Mike Brown should nix the Princeton and let Steve Nash push the ball. The best thing that Steve Nash does is push the ball. Why would you not let Steve Nash push the ball?"

Kenny Jet Smith:

"They were 0-8 in the preseason. I was like 'well they're all veterans just trying to get in shape'. But no! That style of play (the Princeton) will keep every team in the game with them. It will come down to Kobe, Nash, or Gasol to make a big shot in the end of the game, and they will squeeze out. But there are certain teams they should beat by 19 or 20 points, but they will never beat them by 19 or 20 points, they will always be in close games when you're shooting the basketball with 8 seconds left in the shot clock, not 12-14."

"The Princeton, again, have never won an NCAA title."

The offense looked unstoppable in the 1st Q. We just need to master it. It's definitely better than "Nash Ball" or "Kobe Ball" or "Dwight Ball".

Trashing the Princeton Offense = Hating the Lakers?

I mean, I may give you Hating Mike Brown, but these guys will never hate the Lakers as long as Kobe's on the team. And with Nash there too? I want some of that stuff you're smokin

They're pretty much right. Consistently taking the ball out of Nash's hands would be a terrible mistake. Why acquire one of the most gifted passers in NBA history and take the ball out of his hands and have him stand in the corner?

And a caveat, they weren't even running the princeton well. The ball was sticking in guys' hands, ball movement was slow and floor spacing was terrible.

Have you ever seen their analysis back in 09-11? They were constantly hating on us, Barkley saying Kobe was done during the 2010 playoffs and never owning up to it, openly rooting for Houston to beat us, constantly picking us to lose in the WCF, its laughable.

The Princeton really does limit Nash for who he is. With Gasol and Howard, we really need to push the tempo more and make the most of Steve. If all else fails, THEN we run the Princeton as a plan B.

I like to be optimistic and think that Mike is trying to enforce the offense in the early games to get it going then let Nash do his thing once we have it down.

Nash really only did his thing in the last two minutes when he looked like himself again. Kobe was frozen out of the fourth a bit too.

They clearly don't know we shot 56% in the first half.

I agree with some of what there saying but the Princeton offense did look good in the first quarter, It was really frustrating to watch Nash walk the ball up the floor and pass it to someone else straight away I wanted to see the 2 best PnR players in the league doing what they do best. Someone suggested last night that maybe the bench should run the Princeton offense because they're young and have a lot of energy and the starters should actually use Nash, maybe someone needs to tell Mike Brown that it might actually be a good idea to use one of the best PGs of all time.

ok rant over. :D

Part of the problem is, as Kenny was saying, it makes our pace snail-slow. Even though we shot a high percentage in the first half, we only had 46 points (92 point pace, bad for an NBA team). That means there will be a lot of pressure on the defense to hold the other team to similar point totals, which is a lot to ask for in todays NBA predicated on speed and shooting.

It keeps the other team in the game as a result. We can defend at a high level and keep teams under 100 points, but the games are always going to be close as long as we run this offense because we just won't score enough
points to put the game away.

92 points just won't get it done. It doesn't matter how efficiently or not its scored.

I find it awfully annoying that guys keep overlooking the fact that the team shot 12 for 31 from the line. They make 70% of those that puts them at 22 for 31. 10 free points given up. LA beat themselves and made it harder for them. Dallas was playing with no pressure to win and house money. Not saying we couldnt have had some better offensive execution but lets not act like the Lakers lost b/c of the ball not being in Nash's hands. Hell Steve Blake had 6 assists so he made plays. Nash just had a bad game...

I don't know the details of the Princeton offense to well but what I witnessed last night looked like a steaming pile of dog ****. The offense had no structure last night. I have said it countless times, Mike Brown is not head coach material. He is better suited as an assistant. This team has a lot of talent so I expect us to pull it together but Mike Brown is going to be the one thing that holds this team back.

Nash is clearly underutilized in the Princeton. My feeling is that he would like the PnR more often, but in that way they don't get to practice the rest of the offense.

All in all the Lakers had an OK offensive game yesterday, it was defensively that it was awful. They didn't rebound, Dwight looked sluggish, you can't allow Dallas to shoot over 50%.

And of course they have to hit free throws. You can't shoot 40% at the line as a team and expect to win games.

Like any sensible individual I'll value the opinion of a HOF'er over a bunch of armchair forum head coaches. Some of you see the world through purple-and-gold covered lenses. Taking the ball out of Nash's hands is just dumb. And just like Charles said, Dwight is not a traditional post-up center and should not be placed in such a position. What Mike Brown is doing with this team is inexcusable.

Now let's not being hypercritical. The first quarter was really, really good. Spacing was excellent and they ran some amazing sets.

If you shoot 49% from the floor and go to the line 31 times, your offense is not bad at all.
