Lakers Lineups This Year

so ive been noticing a few threads talking about minutes played and how certain lineups fare so i figure that for anyone wondering how they can find this information, basketball reference has a convenient lineup finder that will now give you tons of information about 2/3/4/5 man lineups and how they do.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... finder.cgi

so for example, we can find the net points of kobe/nash/howard on the court being +7.0, 12th best on the team with 366 minutes played. of units with 100+ minutes, this would rank as our 6th best 3 man lineup.

the best? kobe/gasol/jamison at +9.9 with 128 minutes played.

it will also show you the pace these units played at and the like.

how did i do this? well first i made sure i was looking for "cumulative season games" as single games dont help me much. then i changed the "output type" to per 100 possessions (important to distinguish from total or per 48), then i added an additional criteria of >25 minutes played. you can of course change the criteria as you see fit.

this works with defense as well, when you go to "sort by" - go to OPP (whatever you want to see) and you will get defensive numbers.

you can see that the lakers worst 3 man lineup as far as drtg (with more than 50 minutes played) - is
Duhon/Gasol/Meeks at 130.2

the best line up is Gasol/Metta/Hill at 97.0

followed closely by Gasol/Blake/Howard at 97.3

of course it is important to consider minutes played and the like, and that of course these are only 3 man lineups. one of the things that bothers me most is reading posts where people use stats with no context. context is key when it comes to stats.

so yeah, just wanted to give this information out so people can actually use numbers to back up some of the points they make, really seems to be a lot of speculation and finger pointing going on right now without a whole lot of evidence to back it up. sorry for the sloppiness of this post, but you should get the general idea.

okay here are some relevant 5 man units and some numbers on our "big 4"

our best unit with >50 minutes is Nash/Kobe/Metta/Clark/Howard at +19.0 it should be obvious why this is now our starting lineup.

Nash/Kobe/Metta/Gasol/Howard is at -4.0 with 134 minutes played. this lineup is also our worst defensive unit with a drtg of 115.8 nearly EIGHT points worse than the next lineup which includes duhon and jamison

Nash/Kobe/Gasol/Howard is at -4.9 with 183 minutes. somehow out of 41 units with >50 minutes, this lineup is ranked 37. 37 out of 41.
