I've followed this story of the last 2 years, and today it came to an end with Ex Laker guard Nick Van Exel's son Nicky Van Exel getting 60 years for murder. This is a sad story all the way around, I feel for Nick badly. It's gotta be hard to see your son who you've raise from a baby suddenly see his life altered forever. I also feel the family who this happened to......nobody gained anything from this.

I posted this because to this day and truth be told it was Nick's play that put us in position to land Shaq. Nick was that chip on the shoulder player I loved, he was here during the down years. It was him who nick named the new era the "Lake Show".

I feel bad for Nick on this day. Regardless of your personal views.

Seems like an accident no? If they cant find a motive or evidence of premeditation, he will win an appeal and plea down to manslaughter. 8-10 max.

Nick was my favorite player of the 90's Lakers, with his clutch game winners and ackward dance celebrations haha. Our last true point guard... Wish him the best and hope things turn out better if they can...

If it were an accident, he wouldn't have wrapped him in a plastic bag and hid him and taken his Jordan's, jewelry from his body. Regardless, sad story but there has to be blame thrown on nick the quick. There's basic life living lessons that have to be taught and many players put an end to their careers/coaching/basketball related stuff to be with their family. Seems like this kid needed some more guidance. These actions dont come from nowhere. There's some fundamentally wrong stuff that led to this tragedy.

+1
Nick Van Exel deserves half of the blame for raising a kid like this.

Probably younger than most of the fellas posting in this thread. But I coincidentally started watching the Lakers when I was 7 in 96-97. I remember when my dad took me to get a jersey from the store and I had to decide between a young flashy rookie (KB) jersey and a NVE jersey. I chose the #9, even as a kid I loved his swagger. He played with a great confidence and like Deep said a chip on his shoulder. I was so happy for him when he made the All-Star team in '98 and I'll never forget the times he lit up the old Pepsi Center as a visitor and shut the crowd up.

I heard about his son's trial awhile back and it's sad to see one of my favorite old players go through this. Not sure about all of the details of the trial but regardless I hope the judicial system served it's purpose. As far as placing blame on him, sure a parent has a huge impact on their kids but to say he deserves half of the blame seems like a stretch to me.

FWIW I remember seeing an NBA short awhile back and it seemed like Nick always had a good relationship with his son.

 I'm so freaking glad you both can make that call that he should shoulder the blame for his son. For crying out loud he's a 22 year old man. So I take it that you both were very close to Nick? If not then how do you know how Nicky was raised. Sometime parents do all they can for their kids and they still turn out to be horrible people. So saying he should take half of the blame is dead wrong, because he wasn't there when his son shot the guy....sometime I wonder....don't even respond back to this, its just something for you thing about

This isnt Nicks fault. You guys are idiots if you think that. You are responsible for your own actions and your parents can only do so much to raise you the other is on you.

The prosecutors were also able to convince the jury that Van Exel was involved with gangs. That hurt his case quite a bit.

I don't think anybody is trying to say this whole tragedy is Nick's fault. However, I don't think many would also deny there's a remarkable correlation between good parenting and well behaved children.

I feel badly for Nick and especially bad if he worked hard to be a good parent and his son still chose the wrong path.

A couple of post above me was implying that. There may be some slight correlation, but kids can turn bad even if their parents raise them well.

The correlation is not slight at all. Statistics clearly support the notion that bad parenting often leads to bad children. Prisons are full of people that grew up with one parent or abusive parents etc. ie drug and alcohol users etc.

OMG its you again, I have 3 brother and 4 sisters, none of us ever got locked up and 4 of us joined the military the other four are honest people working. So that one parent BS your bring up in here take it right back with you. I also so have many friends that grew up with just a mother or a father and none of use went the wrong way that would put our mothers or fathers to shame. One parent can be just a effective as two.

Also I really don't care for you either, your a vibe is bad, there is nothing good about you and you never have anything good to post just crap...... I know that last part was OT but oh well

Ya and I grew up in a single parent home and don't do drugs and have never been arrested. That doesn't change the fact that more people in our prison system come from single parent homes than not. I'm not saying growing up with only one parent is proof that you'll grow up a scumbag. What I'm saying is if you are a scumbag it's more likely you grew up in a dysfunctional home than not. It's not rocket science.

There's lots of great single parents out there that do a phenomenal job raising their families. My mom, rip, was one of them. If all you get out of my post is all kids from single parent homes turn out bad you probably need to take some reading comprehension courses.

You anecdotal evidence has nothing to do with statistics, and he never said stats show that every single family with poor, abusive, or single parents has **** up children. Calm down

Baby face assassin.

I had to say it you have no idea.

Okay, the careless jerkwad comment is out of my system, what a **** sitch for NVE. That picture is awful to see, because you know the guy's just about good things.
