We might be getting off the hook for Mike Brown

The Cleveland Cavaliers are interested in hiring Mike Brown and may move quickly due to concerns other NBA teams will be pursuing him, according to a source.

Brown left the Cavaliers in 2010 following their second round exit during the final season with LeBron James.

"If anybody calls, you have to listen," Brown said in a telephone interview on Thursday. "I'm not rushing to get back to [coaching]. Whether it's the Cavs situation or anybody else, it has to feel right for both sides.

"If they call, I wouldn't hang up the phone. I'd definitely listen to what anybody has to say. But then you have to decide if it's the right situation for myself, my family and the organization."

Lets go Cavs! I presume we won't be paying his salary if he lands his old job back.

why would you assume that? All coaches get paid their entire salary if they're fired regardless if they get another job elsewhere.

Isn't that the rule with cut players?

Pretty sure he'd be breaking the terms of his contract if he signs a new one. I don't remember exactly but this was brought up previously with another coach.

maybe I'm wrong I guess but I dont think the same rules apply to a player vs. a coach.

he didn't brake the terms, Lakers did. I dont know the rules but I see like how a CEO would get fired and still collect fat arse compensation package and still get another job the next day. The Rutgers AD who got fired for the coaching issue got 2 years of his salary when he stepped down, I doubt he has to give that back if he finds another job.

If we gave mike brown a severance package I'm sure he keeps it, but we're paying him because we're under contract to do so. I'm sure they include a clause that says if he gets a second or new job the contract is void.

I thought the way it worked was we pay him until he lands another job and if said job pays less than what we had originally signed him for, we would cover the difference. I doubt the NBA would allow someone to double dip their salary like that.

The whole princeton offense...what a disaster. If mike just played an inside out game with th3 bigs to start this team would of had 60 wins.

No....coaches contracts are more iron clad than players in a way, the Lakers still have to pay the remainder of his deal weather he's hired by the Cavs or not.

Donald T. Sterling tried that cheap ass trick with Bill Fitch back in the late 80's, he fired Fitch then tried to threaten him not to get another job.The Lakers by law and terms of the contract have to continue to pay Brown, just like they did with Rudy T also.

I think these things would have to be written into the contract, I doubt there's some universal rule that applies to all coaches' contracts.

In the Clippers case there was supposedly a clause that stated Fitch would make a good faith effort to find a new position if fired, and if he found a position they were no longer on the hook:
http://articles.latimes.com/2001/jun/29/sports/sp-16529

So it would just depend on Brown's contract. Unless there's a clause in there, Lakers probably have to pay Brown no matter what.

Rudy T resigned right? Even if he didn't, the Lakers would have had enough reason to terminate his contract for his alcoholism.

I think they resolved it and made him a scout.

That's how it was portrayed to the public. No matter how bad things get in the Lakers real life, they'll clean it up PR wise.

This is true, Rudy has only coached 30 something games when he checked out. So the Lakers was like " hell no...you working for this". But I don't think they could've terminated his deal due to that, unless it was stipulated in the structure of the deal. Doc knew of his past with the sauce.

I didn't know he was ever into it in the first place.

Spoiler:
In other news, Cavaliers publicly admit they don't learn.

I can't say for certain because I don't know how the specific contract works with coaches but in general in breach of contract for employment cases, there's an idea of mitigating damages. So the breaching party only owes enough to make the person as well off as they would be if the contract was carried out fully. So in Mike Brown's case if he had a contract that will expire in 3 years the Laker's would owe him: Laker Salary over that period - new salary over that period.
