ESPN RADIO - Chuck Persons on Mike Dantoni and Dwight

Post#1 » by kblo247 » Sun May 26, 2013 10:07 am

Q: How his role in D'Antoni's staff changed:

- Under Phil Jackson first, and then Mike Brown, my primary role was defense. But when Mike D'Antoni took over, he wanted to implement his offense, which was his perogative to make the team better going forward. So there wasn't anything I could do with it, and I just had to fit in with whatever role was given to me.

Q: How his release came about:

- I got a call from Mike (D'Antoni) telling me he would me more comfortable bringing in his own coaching staff, which I understood, but I was a little surprised.

Story last season when Andrew Bynum shot a 3-pt and got benched, Kobe Bryant, as the Team Captain, didn't hold Bynum accountable and actually catered to Bynum's action. So Chuck Person got into Kobe's face in the locker room for not being accountable.

Q: What did he say to Kobe about being more accountable regarding that Bynum 3-pt:

- What makes a good assistant is loyalty. What was said, whatever goes in house stays in house.

Q: Why Mike D'Antoni's system didn't worked:

- D'Antoni said on his own accord "3-Pointer takes priority over a Post-up". He said that himself to the team. But eventually the ball has to go inside some, so then of course he made the adjustments, although it was a little late for everyone's liking. But he did it, and we benefited from it going 28-12. Does his system fit everyone? That's to be determined. If a guy doesn't like to play in his system then they'll leave, if they like it, they'll stay.

Q: D'Antoni's relationship with Dwight:

- Dwight Howard's relationship with Mike D'Antoni is... serviceable. When you have 4 superstars like we have last year, not everyone would be happy. You have Kobe who is always strong headed, etc. You have 4 dynamic guys that have been elites and you have a coach that comes in who wants to play with a system that doesn't fit with all the guys. So everyone's to blame, everyone has to comeback and sacrifice to achieve more.

Q: Describe Dwight as a player, and as a person:

- I have a good relationship with Dwight. Whoever gets Dwight will have a special special player in their hands. The guy came back 3 months early because he wanted to show Lakers fans he wanted to play for the Lakers. Once he got into shape we were a Top 5 defensive team in the league. When he's out of the game we are just ranked #26 in defensive efficiency, that's a big discrepancy. Whoever gets this guy, that team will be a championship team every year.

Q: Where do you guess Dwight will sign:

- Dwight loves LA. He loves the city. He knows being here is the creme of the crop. But I know this, he doesn't want to be in a place always fighting just to get into the next round. He's going to go to a team that has the best talent around, and he's going to weigh his options on which team gives him the best chance of winning. This is Dwight's first time in free agency, this is the biggest time in his life. He has the right to be selfish and do what's best for himself, what's best for his family.

3 takes precedent over a post up, making the lead defensive assistant an offensive assistant to ssol which he never played in or ran before when we needed a defensive scheme, etc ... WTF Pringles

Most damning thing he said IMO was

"Does his system fit everyone? That's to be determined. If a guy doesn't like to play in his system then they'll leave, if they like it, they'll stay. "

----

Between that and the post up comment I can see any real big or scorer (Melo) saying ugh I'm a millionaire who needs his ****

I'd really love to lure Brian Shaw from Indiana to be our next head coach....give Phil a FO spot to mentor Shaw for a few years (he'd prefer that IMO,not to be in the spotlight but have a thing or two to say) and we're good to go.....we'd have a solid(hopefully, and with the work he's done as an assistant+ being mentored by Phil in the past and hopefully for some time in the future, most likely) coach for years to come

But I think that's unlikely, the FO will probably look at the team's lack of chemistry and injuries and say D'Antoni didn't have really a fair shot and deserves another one....only to fire him in 2014 after our next season will be pretty much the same story success wise IMO

"3-Pointer takes priority over a Post-up"........WTF

This is why I didn't want that clown for this team. And even though he relented and changed deep inside he still feels his way is the better way. And we know that's a damn lie. The Lakers made their legacy off post up players, but this clown MDA thinks it's "the least effective play in basketball". Yeah if you 3rd tier type players as you main post guy or better yet like in Phoenix when he didn't have anyone.

Get outta here with that bull MDA, and if the Lakers lose Howard then they should know damn well why.

LOL D'Antoni it seems like Phil Jackson isn't the only person laughing at you because I'm laughing at this guy and his whole coaching philosophy....I just have no more words for this guy. 3-pointers take priority over a post-up? Has this guy even looked at the stat sheet for our 3 point efficiency last season or even the beginning of his hire? You have one very efficient post up player and one that catch an alley oop from anywhere in the air and you would still take 3 pointers over a post up?

This isn't Lakers basketball, we're known to post-post-post...I hate this guy so much...

If Lakers choose Danphony instead of Howard I'm gonna rage...

don't you think Dwight has to take into account the effect Dantoni will have on his career? Its not just about the Lakers

1 ) Dantoni places 3s over post ups. No big is going to like that. You can say Orlando was a 3pt team, but they played 1 in, 4 out to set up the 3s always keeping him engaged.

2 ) Dantoni may very well say I hAve a camp next year and Kobe's out, so Nash lets force ssol back on them again, and then they get in anther hole. Do you think Dwight and Kobe want to play catch up again with tons of minutes and not Ewing ale to take a game off just to barely get in? That's terrible for the body and lowers your playoff chances too because you use up so much energy

3 ) Last thing I know I would think aboutif I was Dwight is my body. Dantoni didn't protect the guy at all last season. He didnt are techs when teams made borderline flagrant fouls on him. He didnt go to the media and criticize officials. He didnt even argue for him in the playoffs where he was being hit. He doesn't like Dwight, heck that was obvious when he didnt want him in NY. The fact is a coach has to protect their star. SVG took tons of fines throughout the years calling attention to the hits he took. Phil took a large amount of fines protecting Shaq, Kobe, MJ, and Pippen especially come the playoffs when he would fire his ref propaganda to the mass media for emphasis. Dantoni just didn't do it, even when his labrum was torn and reinsured, he didnt even fight for him. No star wants a coach who lets him get anhilated

This, it didn't come from some random source but from a former coach with a close relationship with Dwight. Hopefully, it is because he left with a bad taste in his mouth but it appears he's hinting of a strong possibility of departure.

Almost feels like they're setting stage to get rid of MDA.
Why would an ex-assistant coach come out and say such damning things.

It is sort of unbelievable for a coach who has two post players like D12 and Pau, to emphasize the 3 over the post.
At least he realized his grave error toward the 2nd half of the season, and we started winning.
Also, if Chuck was not asked to focus on D, then who was?
I definitely feel it is time to cut ties with MDA, whether D12 re-signs or not.
The ironic thing is that Pau was the one that was unhappy most of the season. Now we know both of the bigs were unhappy with their role.

SMH... Were really gonna stick with this coach another season... I dont care if a team has Dwight, Kobe and Gasol on it. It should be a contender smh. We did the complete opposite in regards to how we should've been playing this season. And to think we're gonna keep this coach and his style of basketball another season just doesnt sit well with me. And to possibly lose DH12 because of this makes matters even worse

I think he realizes his way is not best for this Laker team. But even so, you've now hired a specialist type coach who is not fitted for the roster. Perhaps I'm a bit biased because I like the guy personality-wise, but having him coach a team like this is like having Gasol sitting out at 20 ft.- both are out of their element.

The biggest mistake was made by management who did not forsee this.

100% my issue. We were setup for failure from the start. Its not all Mike D's fault. He didnt force the FO to hire him and his ways. Jim, Mitch and Jerry made the mistake smh. You cater to a 39year old PG instead of Dwight/Gasol/Bryant. Yeah that makes tons of sense to me smh

The silver lining could be that if Dwight leaves.. Pau is the only one left in the inside and has free reign in the post.

Whenever he's healthy, he does serious damage.
