How Bill Simmons would fix the lakers.

How We'd Fix It: The LakersWhat do Lakers fans think of this? Personally, I agree with Bill Simmons about the way to rebuild a team. Trade for future assets and expiring contracts, pick up talented young players, and leave tons of space to attract talented FAs.
But I also think that the Lakers cannot, and will not take that approach. I think the Kobe's will to win at all costs will force the team to keep all their assets and play for a playoff spot. They'll win just enough games to be in playoff contention at the end of the season, assuming Kobe stays healthy.

People keep saying that but I don't beleiving it. The only people dumb enough to think that this team has any potential are overly loyal and won't leave or complete bandwagoners who will leave when they suck anyways and comeback if they rebuild right. Sad thing is that there are enough Kobe sycophants and Buss is incompetent/stubborn enough to try and fight for an 8th seed and "win one for Kobe."

Important note: Lakers fans would LOVE this. ****, they'd even enjoy 10 days of Slava Medvedenko. As long as Kwame Brown and Smush Parker aren't involved in 10-day roulette, we're good.

Yeah except they wouldn't show up for games if they suck that much lol. Besides most of those trades that Simmons suggests are impossible. Ujiri isn't going to take Nash for 2 more years with 9 million each for two expiring contracts. Nobody is trading for Pau.

You guys are focusing too much on the author of the post.
I despise Simmons as much as the next Lakers fan, but he often has good points.
Too speak specifics, yes, the Nash trade to the Raptors is hard to believe in, but the Pau one to Cleveland kinda makes sense (well, until they actually sign Bynum). The Cavs want to be good this year, and Pau's contract expires at the end of next year, so he could help them make a run for the playoffs and they could either resign him if it worked out or just let him go at the end of his contract.
And he is totally realistic about the Lakers not even contemplating his plan. He's just throwing out ideas that, for me, make sense, but aren't gonna happen. Kinda unfortunately, we're gonna suck next year, and if we don't sign a prime free-agent next summer, we could suck for even longer (although I believe that the summer of 2015 should be our real target, but everyone's focused on 2014).

As a Celtics fan who used to be a Simmons fan, he's becoming increasingly hard to like. All the excitability of a drunken fanboy with a double dose of misplaced intellectual confidence.

Take everything Simmons writes as entertainment and its easily one of the interesting articles you read everyday. He's coherent, funny and original. That's already better than 95% of the rest.

Absolutely!
Step 1 - Trade Nash. Contrary to some opinions in this thread I DO believe we could find a taker for him even at his age. Shed his salary and do not take on contracts past 2014.
Step 2 - Trade Gasol. A contender will want him for sure. Get 2014 and/or 2016 draft picks back in return. Work a multi-team deal if necessary.
Step 3 - Tank for Wiggins...or Randle, Gordon, Parker, etc. I know we all hate to hear the word "tank" but lets be honest about it and call it what it is and what it needs to be.
Step 4 - Tell Kobe that he takes a major pay cut in order to resign in 2014. He'll make the sacrifice I believe.
Melo in 2014. Love in 2015. Add in old man Kobe, one of these lottery studs from 2014 and MAYBE we have a contending team in '15 or '16.
