Lakers interested in Iman Shumpert/Tyson Chandler?

Post#1 » by moonpie » Sun Dec 15, 2013 6:08 am

The Lakers recently called the Knicks to express their interest in Iman Shumpert, acccording to sources close to the situation.

The Lakers are one of several teams to check in on Knicks shooting guard Iman Shumpert, sources said.
No trade is imminent, and sources say the Lakers' call was more about doing their due diligence; it's well-known Shumpert is available. The Lakers are unlikely to make a deal before the end of their current four-game road trip, which concludes Tuesday night in Memphis.

But with Steve Blake, who is expected to miss at least six weeks with an elbow injury, joining point guards Steve Nash and Jordan Farmar on the injured list, the Lakers could be interested in strengthening their backcourt.

Shumpert is more of a shooting guard, but with Bryant taking on more of a playmaking role -- he is averaging a career-high 6.7 assists while attempting fewer than nine shots a game -- since returning from a torn Achilles tendon last Sunday, it's easy to see the two playing together.

Shumpert is struggling through a disappointing season, and the Knicks have discussed trades involving him with several other teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors.

Sources say the Lakers are also interested in another Knicks player -- center Tyson Chandler. The Lakers did not inquire about Chandler when they called about Shumpert, but they are weighing whether to propose a Pau Gasol-for-Chandler trade, according to sources.

Oh ya....

I'd love throw Shumpert on Westbrook.

Tyson Chandler has another year at 15 mil next year, so not sure if the Lakers would be willing to trade Gasol for Chandler. If the reward for taking that extra year is Shumpert than hell yes, but I highly doubt it.

2015 FA market would be more feasible for the Lakers play in, so many ringless young stars.

I would love that trade.... chandler on the block, patrolling... and not crying off the court and ruining team chemistry

It would limit what we do in the off season, but it would be worth it

2015 and beyond is where we should be looking anyway, Chandler expires in 2015. However, with a quick glance at the Hoopshype salary page, I believe we could still offer one of the RFAs (Bledsoe, Monroe, and to a lesser extent Hayward) a max slot even after this deal. That isn't taking into account the rights we'd have to renounce and so forth of course. Just thought that was interesting.

As far as this deal is concerned, I think it's just Mitch doing his due diligence. I don't really think there's a plausible deal to be made.

I thought about it and I think I know how Mitch plans on creating extra space. You could easily get a valuable player by trading Nash's deal and the middle 2014 first round pick to a team with a viable veteran. You would do the deal after drafting a player in the middle of the first round then ship Nash+the rights to that player.

Looking at Russell Westbrook's stats right now and there's a definite trend. He's struggled against Tony Allen, Dwayne Wade, and Danny Green.

Mitch may be thinking that if I can get a defensive guy like that to play next to Kobe, I can keep Kobe from having to take on difficult match-ups.

This is exactly the type of trade to make. Two defensive minded players to shore up that end of the floor in combo with the shooters we already have. Not sure when Tyson is expected back, but this season is a wash anyway in terms of playoff success. Seeing who can perform and is worthy for a contract and getting Kobe back to normal are the main goals. This could result in a max slot available for 2015 when better options are available. Would love to see Farmar/Iman/Kobe/Wes/Chandler lineup get acclimated and go for it next year when everyone is healthy.

The irony of this deal is that it makes Carmelo impossible next summer unless he takes a 4-5mil paycut.

That throws a wrench into plans of possibly going after Melo, but Chandler is a much better fit. Rim protection is the number one need and 2015 looks much better for choices in free agency. But I can't imagine the Knicks would do this trade. Pau is done and Chandler is their most important player besides Melo. The only reason for them to do this is if they're desperate to clear cap room for this summer.

Would Farmar and Johnson take one year deals again? And I couldn't imagine the Knicks throwing in Shrump also. They don't have much assets to begin with

I'd trade Gasol, Kaman, and Meeks for Chandler, Shumpert, and Bargnani. While I don't really like Bargnani, he would be an ideal fit in this offense as a stretch PF and would take him if we got two great defenders in Shumpert and Chandler. Bargnani's deal expires in 2015 which gives us money to sign Love.

Hmm, it is the 15th now so players that were signed this summer are eligible to be traded. Interesting.

What about doing Pau for Chandler directly and then moving on to trading for Lowry. The Knicks almost got him for absolute doo-doo.

Maybe you can trade Pau to the Suns for a late first plus the injured Okafor and then send that for Chandler.

Probably have to take Bargs too (his contract ends in 2015 tho), I can see it benefitting both teams- Knicks getting flexibility to entice Melo to stay and we aim for the 2015 free agent class instead.
