How could we fix this season?

Post#1 » by Hoffa12345 » Tue Dec 17, 2013 4:36 am

Too early to call this season a wash probably, so of the available players who should we target? Theres a lot of Tyson talk, Shumpert (both ring it on D, Shumpert can play a bit of point too), Lowry (dont think we have enough to offer there tho), or is there no foreseeable move and time to look to the draft? I dont even think a Pau for Tyson would make us a playoff team either. Whats the best route at this point?

Nothing we can get to make us contenders. I say we let the season play out get a nice draft pick and look forward to 2015 free agency.

Anyone else find the verb tense in thread title sort of funny? ha ha "How could you??" So accusatory, OP. Anyway:

Guys, let's not overreact. We are playing without a real PG. I didn't even see the game, but taking one look at the state sheet it's pretty clear that's a huge problem. Even just defensively. That means we either have one of our better defenders (Wes) guarding a PG, or we have a lesser defender Kobe/Meeks/whoever guarding a player they normally could have been protected from. So that means the defense is even more of a sieve, and without a great rim protector, we're just asking for it.

People are also making the correlation that Kobe is costing us loses, but it's also the fact we've had no Farmar/Blake/and even Nash. It's obviously screwed up Jodie's game a little bit, as I'm sure he's forced to do some things he's not comfortable with.

Also, Kobe handling the ball when he's recovering from an achilles injury is tragicomic.

Regardless, I don't care one way or the other. Either we figure it out and I watch this team sneak into the playoffs, 7/8 seed, with an old puncher's chance...or we get a late lottery pick. Just sit back and relax, boys. Let's just hope Mitch and Jimmy make a move or two to position either outcome a little better for next year.

How about they don't? I don't see the point of getting to the playoffs and getting destroyed by the Spurs/OKC. If the Lakers suck enough, they might get an impact player that will be help in the future in the draft.

To be honest Im kinda surprised that they have their 1st round pick this year. It wasn't traded?

Mitch was adamant about keeping this year's pick unless we got a real impact player back.

Yup and even if we wanted to, we can't trade our pick until draft night (after the selection is made) anyway due to the fact that we traded away our 2015 1st in the Nash deal.

What are you guys worried about? Stern and his refereeing minions will make sure you make the playoffs like they did last year. After all this is the hollywood lakers we're talking about, way too much revenue from ratings/merchandise not to have them in the playoffs.

Unless the nba is done with kobe and they want a new star in lala-land. Which would be even better for you, since they'll make sure you get a top 5 pick in this very strong draft.

We'll have to wait and see, but i have little doubt we'll see a repeat of last year.

Don't panic... We are closer than people realize to being a playoff team... Let Kobe get his legs back, Farmar/Blake return to run PG & make a move or two to upgrade our defense... I LOVE the Pau/Tyson idea... We need a Center that bangs & plays defense... Pau & Kaman for Tyson, Shump & JR would be huge... Lineup would be as follows:

PG: Farmar & Blake
SG: Kobe & Shump & Meeks
SF: Wesley & Young
PF: Hill & Wesley
C: Tyson & Sacre

Tyson & Shump would change the defense mentality... We would be a dangerous team once Kobe gets his legs back plus we don't have to worry about landing Melo... Send JR to another team...

I dont know about most this board but I happen to believe this stuff really does happen in the NBA, and I also saw it happen last year with us. But I dont even know if we have a team good enough to get us into a position for getting helped in... last year got a lot of attention and we had a better team then and still barely made it, would be a lot harder to pull off for Stern this year, even with help I dont see us getting in in the west. East no problem wouldnt even need him.

I love conspiracy theories. lol. They're unfalsifiable, literally nothing can prove them wrong. If we don't make the playoffs it's cause the conspiracy is to set us up for the future with a lotto pick. If we make the playoffs it's for the ratings and the conspiracy helped us in. lmao. It couldn't possibly be because the team either was or wasn't good enough to make the playoffs. Or if we get a top 5 pick based on pure chance, it's obviously rigged to benefit us.

Fix this season? Depends on what your expectations are.

But at the very least, it would be putting players in positions to succeed, and not putting them in situations where they will fail.

So, to top that list, D'Antoni needs to be what he's supposed to be - a great offensive coach. This needs to be fixed, because the evidence is mounting that what D'Antoni really is a guy who rides on the coattails of instinctive point guards and letting them create, penetrate, and kick it to 3-pointers. That's not offensive genius, and so D'Antoni needs to fix our offense so that we're not putting non-point guards in that same "D'Antoni" role, e.g., Jodie Meeks in a position to handle and create. This is not only inflexible, but (Please Use More Appropriate Word). If we don't have a capable point guard, run some pick and rolls with kobe and pau/hill. Or a basic triangle on the strong side. He can't keep trying to put square pegs in round holes. I'm tired of seeing Kobe, X, or Meeks doing EXACTLY WHAT A D'ANTONI POINT GUARD has always done, which is EVERYTHING. D'Antoni needs to COACH. He needs to set up some kind offense that can work. He hasn't done it yet.

Pau Gasol needs to get his ass into gear. He's losing every 50-50 ball. He's losing 80-20 balls. We try to go to him - but he just hasn't been effective. He can't complain about touches or being involved - he's been more involved in the offense than in the past 3 years. That's on him, and he needs to be more aggressive, make better decisions, and just play harder on both ends of the floor. That's on him, and he hasn't fixed it.

Jodie Meeks need to take a hard look in the mirror and realize he's not a good basketball player. He's a good catch and shoot shooter. He's absolutely a negative in almost every other aspect of the game. In the NBA, he needs to just play within himself, and he's not doing that. Or, improve his game, and he hasn't done it, at least not on the level that exceeds a girl's junior high school summer basketball camp. No off the dribble pull-up threes. No driving with his head down. No putting the ball on the floor - ever. He should never dribble until he's able to protect the ball, pass, or drive past a defender. And he needs to fix that, or fix his brain so that he never plays outside his extremely limited game.

X needs to play aggressive and take more responsibility every game. He can do that - he can't get discouraged by offensive fouls or D'Antoni's rotations. Just play ball, because he has the most well-rounded game on our team right now.

Nick Young needs to be able to either pass or rebound. He can't just shoot and fade away in everything else. He's allergic to boxscores. He needs to contribute in other areas because our team isn't good enough for him to coast.

Those are the immediate changes that need to happen, because we are playing some stupid ugly basketball. That can at least fix that.
