Rookie Ryan Kelly To Get First NBA Start Against Raptors
Posted by: Ryan Ward (January 18, 2014)

After having a breakout performance in the win over the Boston Celtics, rookie Ryan Kelly has started to turn some heads on the Los Angeles Lakers coaching staff.

Apparently, Kelly’s career night was enough to convince head coach Mike D’Antoni to start the rookie against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday according to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times:
[tweet]https://twitter.com/Mike_Bresnahan/status/424661600612519936[/tweet]
In the win over the Celtics, Kelly scored a career-high 20 points in 34 minutes off the bench. The Duke product went 6-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc while also ripping down four rebounds and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Kelly will get the start at the power forward position while Chris Kaman and Jordan Hill will come off the bench against the Raptors. Both Kaman and Hill have seen their minutes go up and down all season long with no real consistency in terms of playing time.

It’ll be interesting to see if the rookie can continue to impress the coaching staff and as a result receive more playing time moving forward.

I'm interested to see Kelly and Hill play next to each other. Hill may be able to cover up Kelly's deficiencies. If Kelly weren't guarding LeBron against Miami, the setup seemed like it worked well.

I think he's now starting over Jordan Hill... SMH no surprise the coach would do this. He's been dogging Jordan Hill all season long

I don't think he's dogging Hill. I think he likes Hill at C, it's just he has to play other guys at C and Hill isn't as effective at PF.

Kelly earned that starting spot. Hill played like boo boo last game and thats probably why he's sitting.

I think this also has to do with MDA's affinity for stretch PF's, it's obvious that Kelly can shoot.

Kelly has a very tough matchup against Amir Johnson. Pau can't handle Amir's speed. You'll say Hill quite a bit in this game.

D'Antoni made this lineup change while watching the Kansas-OK State game. Saw Wiggins, Smart, and Embiid...and realized a tank should be in order ASAP.

Ryan Kelly would be a great four for us if he just worked on his rebounding. His lack of rebounding is the biggest problem with his game, which is putting his ceiling at an Andrea Bargnani-type player.

Hopefully he'll do what Dirk did, just get stronger and become a better rebounder after his first couple years.

But he's got good footwork, he moves well, plays earnest defense for a rookie, good overall fundamentals...

Except for a shooter, he extends too much in his release and follow through, way too forward sometimes, instead of having a consistent landing (the best shooters tend to not move around a lot from release to landing). Probably something that will be ironed out as he gets more PT and shoots that shot in rhythm.

i like him.

agree with Miles, he needs to worked on his rebounding, if he could do it, then Ryan Anderson is his ceilling.

I'd be more than happy with a Ryan Anderson. He's quicker than Ryan Anderson in terms of help defense.

I feel like he is a mix between Anderson and Dirk (style off course, not his actual level of play). He's not the 1-1 guy Dirk is, but he's also got more of a drive to the basket game than Anderson. We'll see where he ends up.

I think he'd be perfect next to Jordan Hill in modern era basketball. Kelly can shot-block so you can ask him to guard a C if the PF match-up is too difficult.

Well, Ryan Anderson is no rebounding machine himself, but Ryan Kelly is just terrible. I mean, he was terrible even in college...rebounding usually translates between college and the NBA, good or bad.

But he first needs to work on that body, because Dirk was pretty awful too his rookie year, but he got better as he got a bit stronger and adjusted to the NBA.

Kelly does remind you of Dirk a little, they really play like guards, they have a soft touch but somewhat unorthodox mechanics, and because they're 7 feet in shoes they can get off that shot any time.

But you like Kelly's confidence, he doesn't play scared, he does a lot of things on the floor, he's learning, he's getting better, and that's why we should throw a ton of minutes at him.

This is another reason why the Lakers really need to move Gasol before the trade deadline; letting Kelly gain as much experience as he can is almost more important than trying to max Gasol's trade value, which has pretty much topped (or bottomed) out.

Also, Kelly needs to play next to Jordan Hill, a rebounding machine who hits the glass...a player like Jordan Hill is going to be his natural partner in this league.

I must say, I've really liked what I've seen the last couple games from The Duke Mamba, I hope he keeps it up and keeps improving. Would love to see him play like the other Ryan, Ryan Anderson.

Does Ryan Kelly only get compared to white players only because he's white? I'm gona expand the horizons and compare him with Jared Dudley and Juwan Howard.

Cause he's not like Dudley or Howard, Dudley and Juwan are not stretch PF's who can shoot anyways... Kelly on the other hand is... I compared him to Anderson cause that's who I think he's resembles most as a good shooting PF who can't really rebound, Channing Frye also comes to mind as well.
