You're Mitch Kupchak. What's your plan?

You're the GM. How do you turn this team back into a contender? (Be specific! "Kevin Love '15!" Doesn't make us a contender)

Continue the tank & take advantage of the current inflated value of picks & trade our pick on draft day for the best player we can get that can make an impact right away.. Hope like hell that Kobe is still Kobe when he comes back.. If Kobe returns to form, we add a star player, & we're able to retain most of our free agents, we should be right back there before we know it.

Im looking into George Karl or Jerry Sloans avaliablity & interest in helping this franchise, I draft wisely personally I look at Exum another guard who could be the future #1 of the club. Come free agency I'm replacing Pau hopefully with a youngish bigs maybe Gortat & Hollins. I'm re-signing Farmar, Wes, Young, Kaman & Hill. Then we wait for Love to hit the FA market!

First thing first, fire D'Antoni. Don't go with the big names (George Karl, etc), go with a young promising coach and hope we develop a Frank Vogel. Resign Pau at a cheap price, let Kobe rehab, draft BPA, and hopefully make a splash in 2015. Our pick next year is top 5 protected, so we might as well go hard and try for the playoffs next year with Kobe/Gasol/draft pick.

With Kobe's age getting up there, I think it is time for him to move to SF. Resign Farmar, Blake, Young, Hill, Kaman, X, Wes Johnson, hope for good health and hope for the best. Release Ryan Kelly and ditch D'Antoni's stupid system.

Farmar/Blake
Young/X
Bryant/Young
Hill/Johnson
Gasol/Sacre

and our draft pick (Exum? Wiggins? Parker? Embiid?)

2014: Draft Embiid
2015: Sign Love and tank to draft a top 5 draft pick (preferably a PG)
2016: Durant and resign Kobe to a cheap one year deal (last hurrah)

A lot of factors would be out of Mitch's control, but this would be ideal.

According to ESPN's draft lottery, based on the current chances, the Lakers get the 3rd pick in the draft and select Jabari Parker. http://imgur.com/0cxHuqn

Now the fun begins.

Step 1. Convince Jim Buss to hire Phil Jackson in a "Pat Riley" type role
Step 2. Fire Mike D'Antoni and hire someone Phil endorses. Use the stretch provision on Nash.
Step 3. Re-sign Pau Gasol. Knowing D'Antoni is gone, he is more likely to re-sign, and possibly for a bargain.
Step 4. Sign unrestricted free agent Luol Deng.
Step 5. Re-sign Nick Young, Jordan Farmar and Jodie Meeks. Pick up the option on Marshall. Sign Andray Blatche.

2014-15 Roster

PG - Kendall Marshall/Jordan Farmar
SG - Kobe Bryant/Jodie Meeks
SF - Jabari Parker/Nick Young
PF - Luol Deng/Ryan Kelly
C - Pau Gasol/Andray Blatche

Everyone thinks Kevin Love in 2015 is inevitable, but we all know defense wins championships. So...

Step 6. Play out the 2014 season as constructed above, and then in 2015, go hard after unrestricted free agent Marc Gasol.

2015-16 Roster

PG - Kendall Marshall/Jordan Farmar
SG - Kobe Bryant/Jodie Meeks
SF - Jabari Parker/Nick Young
PF - Luol Deng/Ryan Kelly
C - Marc Gasol/Pau Gasol

1. Draft Exum/Embiid/Parker

2. Stretch provision on Nash

3. Re-sign Pau to the lowest contract as possible.

4. Sign K Love, Nick Young, Henry, Farmar, Lance Stephenson (?), Deng (?), and the rest of the guys that the FO thinks might serve a purpose in the future (Low contracts of course)

5. Maybe sign Melo if he really wants to leave. (Looks like he does, hopefully he takes a paycut if possible)

Lose MDA, Gain either George Karl or Van Gundy ??

Lose Gasol < Tired of him and seeing every apposing player get game/career highs against him
Prefer Kobe at SF < Kobe will be back with time :)
Young Is better off bench

15 man roster :)

C: Kaman/Draft pick??/Sacre
PF: Love/HIll/Kelly
SF: Kobe/Wesley/Mr X < If he can play SF?
SG: Meeks/Young/Marshon
PG: Kyrie/Farmer/Marshall

Not sure that's even possible?

re-sign Pau for one year big contract
draft Embiid or Wigginz
buy 1st or 2nd round picks
retain current minimum guys for one year
let Pau go in 2015, or sign for cheap (MLE)
sign Kevin Love

Basically this would be my dream scenario as well....

Not sur if I'd want another season like this but I'm willing to take it in the gut if you guarantee me another top 5 pick and possibly Love/Durant after that

Lionel Hollins wouldn't be too shabby either.

*Re-sign Farmar (2 yr, $3-4 M), pick up Marshall's option, re-sign Swaggy P (3 yr, $12-15 M), re-sign Hill (3-yr, $9-12 M), re-sign Xavier (2 yr, $3-4 M) and try to retain Bazemore if he continues to play well throughout the rest of the season and if he isn't too expensive since he's a RFA.
*Pursue Greg Monroe in free agency if the Lakers don't draft Embiid. Offfer him (5 yr, $40-50 M) deal.
*Move Kobe to SF since he can no longer hang w/ young SG's.
*Draft Priority: Dante Exum, Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins.
*Training Camp Invitees: Shawne Williams & Manny Harris. Have these guys battle for their spot on the roster. They did well w/ us in the limited time they were here. I think they deserve it.
*Back-Up Centers To Consider: Jason Smith, Greg Stiemsma, Gustavo Ayon, Kaman (If he's willing to come back and take a vet minimum; doubt he comes back), OR... Gasol... for cheap.

PG: Exum / Farmar / Marshall
SG: Brooks (If he plays consistent) / X or BazeGod (if he plays consistent) / X or BazeGod
SF: Kobe / Swaggy P
PF: Hill / Kelly
C: Monroe / Kaman / Sacre

I agree on exum being our pick depending where we draft. Other than that, that starting lineup is great if you want a top 5 pick again. If you hate paus defense just wait till you see monroes.

My dream scenario would be getting the top pick and drafting embiid, after that you just wait and see how it plays out in FA and maybe the lakers can get bargains at reasonable contracts once teams spend their lunch money. Id even throw money(not max just enough to steal him away)at bledsoe depending what phx does.

Pg)Bledsoe

Sg)Kobe

Sf)????

Pf)Boozer? put in a claim for him if he is amnestied. Puts up 16 and 9 every year. Solid stop gap who wouldnt cost much and would provide great production for the money he would be making.

C)Embiid.

With this we wouldnt compromise our long term cap space and would fix our 2 biggest problems defensively. With a really good defender at the pg position and the rim protector we sorely need.

I have been hearing aND REAding a lot of talk from "reliable sources" in the media that Lakers may seriously consider:

1. Trading THE LAKERS draft pick with assets for KEVIN LOVE. :o
2. Allowing Dantoni to bow out of the Laker head coaching job. (What does this mean I dunno?)
3. Asking Former NBA great Magic or Phil to recruit big names for 2015-2016
4. Developing Marshall for 6th man or starting perm PG job and pray for a healthy Kobe.

Sounds Laker like to me. Not too crazy and a pretty solid course. Would I do exactly this as Mitch. NO. But pretty darn close to something like this.

Oh yeah sign those KiLLaBeez YO! :D

I like your idea as well and oh yeah I've heard about Monroe being bad defensively, but he's at least younger and could potentially improve on the defensive end. Exum or Embiid either one, I'd be content with. Both very good prospects. I feel like if we were to pick up Boozer he would get injured or somethin' since anytime we've picked up older players they happen to get injured w/ us. Bledsoe's knee surgeries are a red flag to me, but if it's not gonna be serious down the line I think that is a great player to go after.
