Nick Young Hopes To Remain Laker After This Season

Post#1 » by leeprettyp » Sun Feb 23, 2014 3:16 am

http://www.dailybreeze.com/sports/20140221/lakers-notes-agent-says-nick-young-wants-to-be-with-team

Nick Young jokingly envisioned how the Lakers should handle his potential free agency this summer.

“They should launch a ‘Stay Swag’ campaign,” Young joked, referring to the Lakers’ unsuccessful signs plastered around Los Angeles last summer pleading for Dwight Howard to stay. Kupchak credited Young this week for having a “great year,” averaging 16.9 points per game and showing a better defensive effort. Kupchak then added, “my guess is he’s going to opt out” of his $1.2 million player option.

“Nick wants to be a Laker,” Young’s agent, Mark Bartelstein told this newspaper. “But his focus right now is to get healthy, get back on the court soon and finish the rest of the season.”

If Young exercises his player option, he secures his standing with the Lakers for one season albeit with earnings likely below his market value. If Young opts out of his contract, he could secure a longer and more lucractive deal with the Lakers. But the Lakers could refuse to match any competing offers to maximize financial flexibility.

He most definitely will opt out of his player option for a bigger contract. I hope Nick Young and the F.O. can work on a fair deal for both sides. He's been one of the few bright spots this season... Whats fair market value for him you think? I think somewhere between $2-4mill would be fair for both sides.

He'll go where the money is and he's likely going to get over-paid by someone... I'd like to keep him and I'd be willing to pay him more but I don't think we're going to be willing to pay him what the market will.

it just so happens the lakers are coming into a bit of extra capspace this summer.

seeing as we need to get to the spending floor regardless, id probably be willing to match a single year deal for young

I like Nick Young . Love his attitude and smile, lots of charisma. I would love to keep him for next year at least.

The Lakers are auditioning wings and have a lot of options.

Although Young could be had for a discount at 3.5 to 4 million dollars a year, the Lakers will pass, even with the discount.

There are just too many other potentially cheaper options, and in this case, right underneath near noses.

They need an offensive punch off the bench, but for a bargain basement price, specifically, a player making the minimum or near minimum in the summer of 2015, when they starting spending they're money.

Henry, Brooks, Harris, and, to a lesser extent, Meeks can all fill the offensive spark off the bench role vacated by Young. Bazemore has many games to make an impression as well.

If he opts out ... the Lakers won't have him back past next year. Simple as that.

It is what it is.

He's probably looking for at least a 2 year deal. I wouldn't mind giving him something like a 2 year 3m/year deal but we'd have to be very careful to make sure we still have that max slot open in 2015.

I really hope Swaggy P stays. He loves it in LA. I can't see him leaving his hometown for some other team. We gave him the opportunity to resurrect his career he owes it to the franchise to be loyal and stay.

Swaggy P & FarmR took BIG pay cuts to play for their home team... Swaggy made $8 million last year & Farmar bought out of a $3 million deal to play here for $1 million... Swaggy will get 3 years at $3 million a year & Farmar will get bumped to $1.5 million a year... Lakeshow baby...

Thats a win for both sides with Nick Young.. But Farmar would be taking another huge financial hit there. I hope these numbers would happen though

3 million is definitely a discount, but would they pay him that when they could lock up Henry for cheaper and the same amount of years.

Couldn't Henry completely take on Young's role on this team?

I just the the Lakers will be pinching pennies on the wing positions until after 2015 because of the cheap options they've created for themselves.

Henry will never average 17 PPG once in his career.. This is the 3rd season Nick Young has done it.. Swaggy is a legit 6th man & will probably win 6MOY atleast once if we get back to contending while he's here. 3M a season would be an extreme discount for what he brings to this team. I think he could see offers in the 4-6M range.

Yeah, I know.

That's "definitely a discount", an extreme one as you said.

Everything you said is correct, however, in preparation for a summer of spending in the summer of 2015, the Lakers will want to keep the numbers as low as humanly possible.

Young is a fantastic scorer, but, although it's definitely a luxury, the Lakers don't necessarily need him when they:

(A) have other wing options who can score off the bench (not as well, but still capable)

and

(B) are trying to find "extra bargain basement, Black Friday, clearance, backroom deals" until they get their new franchise guys

If they already had Love and Irving in their possession, their would be no argument to speak of, but until they do, they will be pinching pennies in a major, major way.

The only exceptions, I hope, will occur when it comes to signing bigmen. They'd sign Jordan Hill to a 4 million dollar deal or so because of the scarcity of bigs.

Henry price might fall by alot due to his injury and now possible emergence of Bazemore who we can excerise an option on him.
