Melo signs with the Lakers if...

Speculation in the media lately is that Melo will take less (14M?) to go to "bring his talents to South Beach." Let's say that the numbers/circumstances don't work out for that scenario but Melo nevertheless wants to leave NY. Who would the Lakers have to add in FA or trade for Melo to come to LA for less money? How much less would Melo take to come to LA?

For this exercise, assume the following:
1. Nash is waived via stretch
2. Nick opts out
3. Lakers get 3rd pick in 2014 draft
4. All FA waived/renounced, leaving only Kobe/Sacre/Pick
5. Cap is 62.9M
6. With cap holds, the roster is at 35,429,134 leaving 27,470,866 for Melo+FA(s)

Notes:
1. With a few exceptions the difference between minimum cap hold and cap hold for player currently on the roster is 407,907 so just subtract that from the total if you want to hold a player (such as Farmar) in order to use an exception to sign after cap room extinguished (e.g., non-bird or room MLE)
2. Bazemore's Qualifying Offer is 1,115,243 so that is a difference of 607,907

Here is one example (27,470,866):
1. Exercise cap hold for Farmar = 407,907
2. Give QO to Bazemore = 607,907
3. Sign Monroe = 9.5M
4. Sign Melo = 16.95M
5. 16.95M+9.5M+407907+607907= 27465814

Would Monroe sign a contract starting at 9.5M? Probably will have bigger offers elsewhere but perhaps the lure of LA to play with Melo and Kobe would convince him to take less. Would Melo take such a huge paycut to come to LA? Probably not, but recent statements indicate that he might consider it.

Edit: I originally indicated that I didn't favor this option, but I have since changed my mind.

You forgot one thing...We have to fire Dantoni. He won't come here if Dantoni is still head coach.

If the question is who would we also have to acquire to be able to sign melo at a discount then the only answer is lebron.

$27 mil to split between the two of them is no where near enough (Thanks Kobe!) I don't see Melo taking anything less then $20mil a year unless he was pairing up with lebron... and that ain't happening.

If we had to choose between Love or Melo I would choose Love any day of the week < I just like him better

Is there a way where we can sign both?? with Melo taking the pay cut?

If we get Mellow, I won't watch one gMe next season... Dude is a black hole... He is not a team player or winner... Plays no defense as well...

clearly you havent been watching melo this year (or last year really) becuase to say hes not a winner and is a black hole is just a straight up lie. he takes stupid shots sometimes, a bit like kobe, but hes been insanely good this year. legit a top 4-7 player, something i would never say about melo before.

before this season i was really opposed to signing melo, but after seeing him this year i kind of want him on the lakers. hes rebounding like an absolute stud, is a scoring machine, and is much better at staying involved in the offense (not that NY has an offensive system). hes putting in a lot more effort on defense too.

the team around melo is without a doubt one of the worst teams assembled around a star player ever, he deserves very little blame for their losing.

As good as he's been this year I don't think the Lakers will fire Mike D'Antoni to acquire him. If they would not do that for a legit franchise player in Howard entering his prime, there's no way they will undermine a coach to pay Melo $80 mil over the next 4 seasons.

are we positive that Melo hates MDA and wouldn't even consider coming to the Lakers if he remains coach or is that embellished myth from an incident or two?

I liked Kevin Ding's suggestion that Okafor could be a fit if healthy next year. Assuming he would come for a reduced price given the injury this year, it could leave $ for another starter. So using my example above, substitute Okafor for Monroe:

Farmar
Kobe/Pick
Bazemore
Melo
Okafor

This is more realistic for the money because Okafor probably would sign for around 8M, leaving Melo a starting salary of close to 19.5M. Problem is that I doubt Melo is coming over with that roster.

What I dont understand is if the idea of Okafor is in the F.O. plans. Then why not move Pau for him before the deadline?

I don't know that it is in the FO plans, just a suggestion by Ding (although he does seem to have good inside sources). In any event, even if he is in the plans, acquiring him wouldn't have been any different than signing him because his cap hold is so huge (19M) that he would have to be renounced anyway (meaning Bird rights would be gone) if the cap room is needed, or he would be signed before any FA to remove the cap hold, which means his Bird rights wouldn't be necessary as he would be signed using cap room.

You're talking about Greg Monroe right ?

If you are at least I know somebody here can understand that he can play. All we need at the 5 is s guys who can clog the middle and have some decent hands when the ball comes to him. I like Monroe's game a lot.

Yes Greg Monroe IMO is one of the best available FA who Melo might want to join forces with. He is only 23 years old and has a lot of upside potential. Plus doesn't make sense for Detroit to match a deal starting at 9.5 given the fact that they gave JSmith 13.5 and will have to pay Drummond in a couple of years. I swear, the more I watch the Knicks play garbage basketball like today against CHI, the more I think the Melo may want to join up with Kobe for a run at a ring. Reading George Karl's quotes re: Melo seems like Kobe is the perfect match for him.

They know they will.

He'd shed those labels under Kobe's tutelage. Someone wiser, greater and way more proven than him that he actually has great enough respect for to listen to and follow their lead.

I live in Michigan and work Pistons games. I can tell you both that Monroe is the real deal. I have seen most of his games in his career. The Pistons don't know what the eff they are doing with him. He is a legit C. We need to sign moose.

how can you say this when its the very same team last year that won 50 games with the same HC? As for Melo being top 4-7, sure if ALL you care about is scoring. Melo doesn't take "some" stupid shots, majority of his shots are stupid, the ironic part is his stupid shot selection is actually a good fit with Antoni offense. For OP, how exactly does Melo take 14mill from Mia when they plan on getting back all 3 of the big 3?
