Kobe to be officially ruled out for the season

LOS ANGELES — The words are about to become official.

Kobe Bryant, out for the season.

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to declare Bryant out for the rest of the 2013-14 Lakers season later this week, according to team sources. Bryant is not accompanying the team on its trip to Oklahoma City and San Antonio, staying back to be reexamined by team doctor Steve Lombardo. And considering where Bryant's level of discomfort remains with the fractured lateral tibial plateau in his left knee, barring an unforeseen change, the team will finalize the decision that Bryant will not play again this season.

Not really news but I guess they have to make it official. The real question is what system are we running next year with Kobe back in the fold.

I had a feeling this was going to happen about 15 games ago honestly. Just never made sense for him to rush back or amp up the rehab if there was progress (which apparently there isn't much?).

I'm going to get slammed for this but for all practical reasons, he should have been amnestied. If you think the media fall out would be too much you should at least not have offered him a 2-year extension without even a f'king team option on the 2nd year! Serenity now!

There's no reason to play him and I can't imaging sitting on the bench was a whole lot of fun for him...

He should be ruled out... He should go home...

I hope that's all it is, though... If he's got some lingering damage that would suck bad,

I won't slam you but it is kind of disillusioned, you do realize that if Kobe was amnestied Metta who was waived by the Knicks and looked like absolute garbage would still be on this team. Along with Pau who checks out frequently and Nash who has done little to nothing in a Laker jersey, who is also just as injured as Kobe?

The extension I can't argue that one but I see some reasoning behind it, but Amnesty Kobe while keeping Pau,Nash and Metta, Mitch or Jim wouldn't be able to walk the streets anywhere in the country outside of Boston.

I hope it's because the season is lost and not because of the knee issue. 6 week problem turning into 17 weeks is pretty big deal

7 million cap hit vs 30 million cap hit is not the same. I know the money does not come out of my pocket but we could probably have retained Dwight in the process.

I doubt it, even if we would have amnestied Kobe we didn't have any cap space to make any moves to get Howard to stay. Especially after deciding to stay with D'Antoni although he requested a different coach.

A Kobe amnesty is a P.R. nightmare that no one in the organization would have wanted to deal with especially with D'Antoni on the payroll and Dr. Buss wanting Kobe to retire a Laker.

PR nightmare would be putting it lightly. Also, what kind of message does that send to the rest of the league and its players?

I'm partially glad the team gave him the extension because it shows the Lakers aren't just a business is business franchise. Kobe has meant a lot to this team, and I'm glad the top heads recognized this and have him ending his career in a Lakers jersey.

5-10 years from now no one is going to care he got that extension. All we'll see looking back is how the Lakers locked up an All-time great from beginning to end. The way it should be.

Smart idea. What I'm more interested in is getting a better update. Is it progressing enough to be healthy in the future? When it first happened, we heard it there was a possibility it could be a serious long term issue.. is that the case?

Kobe being on payroll for this dead season and the next two is the least of our (the lakers) worries. The late, great doctor Buss wanted him to retire a laker, and I'm humble enough to admit that he knows a lot more about basketball than I do.

It runs parallel to all the gb idiots who say stuff like 'the lakers have a big market advantage and free agents blah blah small markets'.

Our organization has been very successful for a very long time, of course we would have certain advantages smaller teams wouldn't. And we've been successful 100% due to the Buss family's dedication and work. Mr Buss was an old school guy and I can respect what he wanted done in regards to loyalty.

When his deal was signed, I always had a feeling that it was for him to agree to the tank... Meh.. Good for us.

Heh that's what I thought... and to be perfectly honest, in spite of all the problems that we have, I really don't mind Kobe playing with a chip on his shoulder.

and what would we have do with that 30 millions cap relief ?

this season is meant to lose IMO since Howard left, capspace is not the issue. Its very disrespectful to amnesty all-time Lakers great just because of his injury.
