Kendall Marshall - 2nd in NBA in Assists per Game

Honestly quite a feat, and an unexpected result from Marshall after calling him up from the D-League.

http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/stats/ ... lar_Season

Even when adjusted for PACE, Marshall only falls to 5th.

It's also very nice to know that we have him wrapped up VERY cheaply for another year. Though he seemed to hit a wall when Farmar/Nash/Blake returned, he still showed he does have a nice vision for the game. I believe if we draft a PG, he and Marshall will split the minutes.

I'm happy to see anyone from this Lakers team in any NBA leaders category. Good job from Mitch & Jimmy.

The real question is - can he play outside of MDA's system ???
None the less I'd like Lakers to keep him

Farmar >>> Marshall

If we get Exum he better be out of here...Exum starts,Farmar gets the backup PG role,a role suited for him

He has a 900k team option.. Even if it's as a 3rd stringer we aren't doing better than Marshall for cheaper.. Also Exum is 6'6 & averages assist numbers you see from SG's.. Just because he's the best ball handler & passer on the Australian teams he has played on doesn't mean he will be a PG in the NBA.

Who cares about assists average lol...there's more of being a quality PG than just raw assists numbers...who were clearly inflated by playing for D'Antoni btw

If we have Marshall playing big mins we won't be in a much better position than we were this year....also Kobe's back, who do you think will hog the ball?Kobe or the guy who led the tank??Marshall is an abysmal off the ball player even with his unsual 3 PFG% and let's not start talking about defense

Marshall doesn't work with Kobe playing....period
Even if we didn't have Kobe,I'm not sure he can play in a different system than D'Antoni's either

I don't want to see him play ever again if not for garbage time

Exum,Farmar rotation is solid....if we don't get Exum and take Smart instead he's still better than Marshall and needs to play in front of him

It seems like you didn't even watch the games.. Marshall isn't a ball dominant PG at all.. During the period he was putting up his best assist #'s he wasn't handling the ball all the time, it was a team effort.. He just has amazing court vision & seems to make the absolute best pass possible every time he passes the ball.

He handles the ball doesn't he?....he might not hog it as much as guys like Jennings but he's the ball handler when he's on the floor...who cares how he got his "best assists "?

He's not a starting caliber PG on a contender/playoff team....he got a ton of mins on a team of outcasts ,played a friendly system and got his stats? That's it

Farmar was beasting as well in the same system before he got hurt....Blake was averaging almost 10 ast a game as well for a stretch before he got hurt

It was not just Marshall having pretty stats.....any PG would have had pretty numbers given Marshall' role, esp for that stretch in which he was virtually the only PG on the team

Look at Aaron Brooks in Denver after he was warming the bench in Houston...is he now a world beater?
He got a chance,he put up some stats..that's it.He's still a backup at best in the league talent wise
So is Marshall

Where's his impact ?I saw plenty of time Jordan having impact on a game,I can vividly name at least 2 W he brought us in which I cursed the hell out of him ,cause he messed up the tank

Also you can get a high number of assists when you have a ton of good shooters who hoist up a lot of catch and shoot shots....that inflated his numbers as well

Marshall was a product of an offensive system that inflates offensive stats.

In any other normal offense he would average 7 assists max.

Much rather have Farmar, he was in the D-league for a reason.

well if he's product of a system, well at least he's good at a or 2 systems, anyway when he was in UNC, he can get you 9.8 apg in elite D1 program, that amazing, that mean he can really pass the ball.

if we drafted Wigginz or Embiid, he will be good for our starter, and just plug Farmar as bench spark.. you know, you dont need 15 all stars on your roster.

Love you Mirja but you're wrong....

He a good passer but that doesn't make him a starting caliber PG on what we want to be,a solid competitive team

Smush Parker had decent stats on the Lakers, couldn't find a job anywhere else
Goudelock was killing it last year in the playoffs...can't find a job
Aaron Brooks had some big games for Denver.....was a bench warmer in Houston and Sacramento previously
Farmar had very good per 36 numbers before he got hurt
Blake was doing exactly what Marshall was doing distributing the ball, before he got hurt

Given an opportunity, lots of guys will put up decent numbers.....that doesn't equate to impact or wins
There's a reason most of the guys I mentioned(talking only about PG's,there are a ton of examples for other positions as well) have good stats but are on bad teams

He is a very good passer, give him big mins + shooters + a system with a lot of jumpshots/high pace...of course he gets you assists
He can't defend, can finish at the rim ,can't beat his man off the dribble ,I'm not sold on his shot yet, this 40% season from 3 might be an abberation more than anything

He is not a starter...sorry
Rich man's Bobby Hurley

Positives
- he's a better 3 point shooter than I thought he was
- he's locked up for the minimum for another season, and he's young enough to improve

Negatives
- he has zero intangibles, not what you want from your point guard. I saw no urgency, passion or any sort of leadership out of Marshall this season on the court, sorry but as the point guard thats your JOB. This was the biggest disappointment for me since it's something you either have or you don't
- all his other flaws we're all aware of.

Given the lakers injury history at pg recently, keeping Marshall as a 2nd or 3rd stringer is ideal

I don't think the point of the thread was to say Kendall Marshall is the future or anything. Just the fact that for the way we got him and have him wrapped up for next year at a really cheap cost, he's a good asset considering that.

Can he develop into a legit backup PG? That's the question and expectation I have for him.

Amazing passer and shooter. Could be 6th or 7th man for a contender.
