Pau Gasol says return hinges on "Significant Changes"

http://www.insidesocal.com/lakers/2014/04/23/pau-gasol-says-return-to-lakers-hinges-on-whether-they-make-significant-changes/

“Re-signing for the Lakers is a possibility, but I’m not sure whether to say it’s a remote one,” Gasol wrote Wednesday on his personal Web site. “If there’s anything or anyone who could make me stay it’s Kobe Bryant. I’d stay for him, but there’d have to be significant changes. I’ve said it many times: I want to be in a team that has a solid chance to win another tournament and where I can be an important factor in the game.”

“I’ve never concealed the fact that D’Antoni’s style doesn’t suit my game,” Gasol wrote. “Everybody knows this. I don’t know if my decision will be swayed by whether Mike stays or leaves. Obviously, the coach is a very important factor for any team.”

“Money isn’t important to me,” Gasol wrote. “I have other priorities. A contract lasting several seasons, the make-up of the team that signs me: I’ll need to think long and hard. I won’t just go to the franchise that offers me the biggest salary, I know that.”

“It’s been very difficult for the coaches too,” Gasol said. “They’ve had to be really patient to handle all these injuries. And they deserve credit for that. But it has obviously damaged the team and we can’t hide it. We’re all responsible for it.”

It doesn't take Einstein to realize Pau wont seriously consider coming back unless there's a coaching change. Whats a good price range to resign Pau back in your opinion? Or you personally don't see Pau returning period?

I think MDA will be gone by the end of next week... I think that qualifies as significant... We have a high draft pick. Also significant. And as long as Pau doesn't expect more than maybe a 3rd of what he was making this season over 2 more seasons, we'd have enough cap space to make significant roster improvements.

Still think he'll be back for the remainder of Kobe's contract.

Gasol wants a multi yr deal like he should. at his age he should be looking to get as many yrs as possible. i don't think the lakers are in a position to offer him that no matter who the coach is.

Hey Doc, that begs a question you can probably answer... Mitch said all they could offer Kobe was a 2yr deal, that the rules prevented anything longer... Is that because it was an extension? How many years could the Lakers offer Pau?

Up to 5 yrs?...other teams can offer him 4

He'll probably get 3 due to his age

Kobe could have technically gotten a longer extension, but any more yrs that what he got would have counted against the cap this upcoming yr and the following one, basically destroying any cap. That's due to the over 36 rule. Same applies to pau so the most he'll likely get is 3 yrs. some team that doesn't plan to have cap might offer him more yrs as they attempt a sign n trade though.

Anyway, I assume someone will have no problem offering pau their mle for 3 years, someone like the Knicks or a number of other teams. That third yr for the lakers though will be very difficult to offer since that's when Kobe's contract expires.

I think Pau prefer Lays over Pringles.

Knicks can only offer the tax payer MLE right? If their offer is 3 years/$10 mil or so, we can trump that with 2/$18 or something in that range pretty easily I'd think. Unless someone offers to do a sign and trade, he will not get his wish for a contending team, decent salary and enough years.

I'm telling you a no trade clause will go along way for Pau. He deserves it.

He's not gonna get a long term deal from other teams nor here.

Longest he might get is a 3 year deal with the last year having a PO/TO.

I think if we can somehow build a competitive team next year, he'll take a paycut and resign with us, even if we don't fire Pringles.

Props for gasol for being very professional in all these mess, I'm surprised he still looks up to kobe after that head scratching contract the lakers gave to him. Because it could be one of the main reasons we won't be able to resign him this summer.

I'd do a 3 year contract (knowing we won't be in it to win it next year unless a miracle happens) and I'd offer a no trade (if the price is REALLY right). I think he'd go for that.

I think MDA will be gone and Pau stays with a 2 year deal at $7-8 mil/yr, with a team option for a 3rd year.

I hope he stays but at an affordable contract. I think mike is gone as well, but not sure who the lakers will pick up.

One year at $10 million than slide K Love in the front court... Pau & K Love are too soft to play together...
