I saw this article on ESPN and I keeping thinking depending on our lottery pick & if front office gets rid of Mike D that we should make a push at Melo this summer. What you guys think?

I dont like his ISO game, not of the same calibiur I know but I saw Tor. stats last nite before and after Rudy Gay trade, it was ridiculous how much better Tor got at "team ball" after getting rid of Gay. Melo makes far more impact than Gay but their offense is similiar in that once ball is in their hands, it tends to "stick" for whatever reason, we dont need those type of players.

Are you considering the talent that has also been surrounding him during his career? To me that makes a big difference with any superstar player.

No. Because he's expensive and has no up-side... His career from here on out is a known and will likely consist of a gradual decline till retirement.
We have Kobe to fill that role. We need guys for our future core.

I don't think it's possible to build a contender with Kobe on the books for as much as he makes. As a result I dont think the lakers should be signing anyone to long term deals from this free agent crop.

Not saying Lebron would leave Miami but if he opts out this summer and says he is considering Lakers as one of his top choices you are saying you wouldn't offer him a long term deal knowing Kobe's 23.5 mil would be off the books come the summer of 2016?

i think melo is underrated. he had too much to carry for the knicks. sure he needs a great player next to him to succeed but we have kobe. you dont directly take what melos doing on the knicks and say yeah hed do exactly that in LA. he wouldnt have to. when you need a bucket..when you need someone to carry you for stretches, assuming kobes healthy.. there would be two solid offensive options. his defense is frowned upon but a lot of top offensive talents dont use much energy on the defensive end. theyre getting beat up trying to score so much. (not saying its right, just truth imo). hes not THAT bad on D. like when the games close in the 4th, you think he'll be a matador and let him man go by him? he can defend most 3's and 4's.

if we surround him with enough talent.. (shumpert, amare, felton, jr smith is not the talent im speaking of), he is an absolute beast. second best scorer in the league and showed in the olympics and parts of denver and last year that he can defer. in NY, why would he defer. the other options were putrid.

Not really interested in considering fantasy unrelalistic scenarios. With the free agents expected to be available this summer, I don't believe you can build a contender this summer.

His offense was of the same style during Den run to the WCF, it was Billups presence that took the "sticky" hands away from Melo. I recall during that WCF, there was an interview where Karl basically emphasized that Melo had to do certain things before he could jack up shots, like get a certain amt of rebs, certain amt of assist, etc. pretty much "team ball" oriented stats 1st before he got his. That is NOT a player you would want if a coach has to force you to play team ball 1st before jacking up shots. We have 40 old pg and Farmar is also a scoring PG and I dont even want to mention Marshall, I still dont believe in his game once MDA is gone. Thus we basically have 2 ball stopping ball dominant players, it will be bad.

The free agents that will be available next summer will be just as old or lack just as much upside as Melo. Aldridge 29, Gasol 30, Rajon Rondo 29, Parker 32 the only players of acceptable age that's not restricted would be Love and Jordan who both will be 27 when the season starts.

Only way were getting exceptional young players under 25 will be by draft or trade restricted free agency almost assures that.

Not pulling up any fantasy. You stated you wouldn't sign anyone from this summer's free agent crop to long term deals. With players like Lebron, Melo, Bosh, Lance Stephenson, Eric Bledsoe, Pau Gasol, and a few others that would be nice pieces to start building a contender. Very rarely can you build a contender from scratch in one off-season so it is always wise to add a piece in a summer as long as it doesn't require over paying.

For the kind of blackhole that would demand 20~mil a year to be productive at a relatively high level for a few more years, no I wouldn't. Under the current cba you only pay Durant or Lebron that kind of money.

Probably not, but as of now, I'm still not sure. I think for me it really depends on what happens come Draft Day. If we get a top pick, we don't need Carmelo. If we don't get a top pick, I still don't think we NEED Melo, but it wouldn't hurt to sign him anyway. I don't know, though.
Maybe waiting for Love or Irving or Westbrook is a better go.

The Lakers championship window starts later down the road and unfortunately that will be when Kobe's contract no longer hampers us from having the cap space to properly build a contender in this new CBA. If Melo was younger then I think you could make an argument for him but by the time Kobe's contract comes off the books in 2016, Carmelo will be 32 at the start of the season. In comparison Kevin Love would only be 28 years old at the start of the the 2017 - 2017 season.

My goal for the Lakers future isn't just to build a one and done championship team. We all saw what happens to a team when age creeps up on its core players. I want a team who's core is young and can compete for championships year in and year out. Its nothing against Carmelo but he just doesn't fit that goal very well.

I would not go after Melo. We are on a 3-5 year plan for contention and he does not fit that time-line.
We need to save our cap space for the likes of Love, Westbrook, or even Durant.
Melo has shown us what he has. He is a great scorer but has no defense and little team concept.
He will not win you championships.
It's time to rebuild and Melo is not one to build around.
