Dirk vs Kobe (shots fired!)

Post#1 » by b shaw20 » Wed May 7, 2014 2:04 pm

Especially on the Laker forum, this will seemingly be like someone throwing a granade in the room and running for cover. For the record, I love Kobe but have been very critical of him in recent years. So much that some poster on here seemed to think I was anti-kobe.

In reality, I am just pro-Laker. This article seems to draw a line in the sand bewteen Laker fans and Kobe fans.
IMO, for as much as Kobe has done for the franchise over the years I really would have hoped he went out with a realistic chance of winning another title. Like Duncan and Dirk, he would have had to sacrifice financially and carrying the offensive load.

Just two different viewpoint from aging superstars....

I don't think this is a jab whatsoever. More like a finger poke if anything. Pretty sure this will not anger Kobe whatsoever.

If it came from someone like Wade, I'd take it as a shot fired but Dirk loves Kobe and has admitted to it a bunch of times. It was more or less a straight answer from a guy who's usually very frank with his interviews.

The reality is simple, Kobe has a monster ego and still thinks he is a top player in the league therefore deserves the money... Always has had that confidence... I do wish he took $10 to $15 million a year so we could get more help but it "Is what it is"... Could you imagine if we had another $10 mlion to spend next year...

Dirk hasn't gotten his new contract yet, lets wait and see how much his "paycut" is gona be. I dont like the contract either but blame needs to go on mgmt. cause they're the ones who offered, no sane man would tell their boss oh I dont want 20mill can you just give me 10mill instead. Even if you're a hundred millionaire you take more when offered.

It boils down to how much a another championship is worth to kobe at this stage in his career...

IMO, he (like Dirk and Duncan) will never have to worry about he and all his family living a freaking good life. Even without $10-15M more in the bank,... its all about what legacy you want to leave behind in your NBA career.

for Kobe:

won a ring - check
won multiple rings - check
won back to back to back rings - check
won carrying the team - check
won as many rings as MJ - TBD
top 5 all time - TBD

Kobe's the kind of guy who thinks if I'm not the best guy on the team, then it's not worth winning a championship.

Sure, he wants rings, but he wants the rings to be his. He had enough of Shaq getting the credit for his first go around. At this point in his career, he's playing solely for legacy.

I completely agree with this and have said it many times before. So we can also agree that he wil never win another championship. His legacy is already sealed at this point.

I'll wait till the offseason plays out before I get upset with the Front Office for offering the extension to Kobe.

Eh Cuban would not give it to Dirk.

Besides Dirk didn't earn the same deal. Kobe won multiple rings, sold out countless arenas, drew top ratings, moved merchandise, and is far more valuable on and off the court for a team. Kobe is still by in large undercompensated for what he's generated. The other thing is Dirk like Duncan has been skipping out on not paying state tax their whole career, as it was already illustrated earlier this year when Kobe got that lump sum check of 24 mil, after taxes he got 13 in California

Its funny because it's so obvious to everyone else but yet here's Kobe completely oblivious to the fact that you need cap space to bring in help. Because of this I don't feel bad if Kobe doesn't win another. Atleast he can go down saying I made the most money out of everybody in nba history.

Nothing new. The local radio guy here is NY always refers to signing a guy to big contract as the "Kobe MAX" contract.

Maybes its not "Obvious" because he's never had it being cap space in his 18 year career and won more than anyone in the league.

What has Tim's sacrifice amounted too? Nothing end result wise

What's funny is it wasn't actually Kobe's max.. He could have asked for 9M more per season. In hindsight if I'm Kobe, I demand the actual max.. If you're going to get crucified after taking a 9M annual paycut, you might aswell not take 1 at all. Show them the difference between crippling the teams chances of adding another star & meeting somewhere in the middle.

As MJ said once said:

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take [at the championship, because your contract potentially handicapped the organization since you're 35 and simply can't carry a team just on your own...and in reality never could]."

Kobe's ego believe that he is a top player and he should be paid as such. He doesn't think he needs monstrous help. Kobe probably wants the right sidekick and role players.

I've said this before, but Kobe doesn't really screw over the Lakers as much as he does himself. In two years, if the Lakers maintain their flexibility, they'll have Bean coming of the cap for 25 million.
