Happy 10 Year Anniversary, .4!

It was 10 years ago today that we witnessed something special. Even though we didn't win the championship that year, it's still probably one of my favorite moments as a Lakers fan.

That Duncan shot was so stunning, for some reason I had a feeling there was no way we could lose like that, I immediately told my buddy that we're gonna win this, I was sure of it. But looking at the video Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and Malone all look like they were dead in the water....

Until this man stepped up:

Cheers!

SHaq summed it up best that one lucky shot deserved another. 0.4 would have been a lot more memorable if we had managed to win the title that season. Losing to Detroit is an even worse pill to swallow than losing to Boston in 2008.

The Malone thing gives it a pass, IMO. Shaq and Kobe always needed that 3rd scorer, and without Karl, we just didn't have it. Also, I think things were just always going to fray between Shaq and Kobe, especially after the circus that was 2004.

That Ginobii hairline.
I remember this game. They had some timeouts before the play and if you went on NBA.com they had the Spurs as winning the game already.

Man, I cannot believe that was 10 years ago.

It feels like yesterday.

We should have won it all that year. Damn pistons.

Yeah, was an awesome moment at the time, but I can't even think about that without thinking about losing to the Pistons. I was in 8th grade, just emerging into my Laker obsessed life and it was my first gut punch as a Lakers fan.

I also had a strong feeling we would still win this game even after the Duncan shot, not sure why. A couple weeks before this game, Kobe hit an insane buzzer beater against Portland so I knew it wasn't out of the question that another buzzer beater could occur. This series was just crazy in itself, we were down 2-0 and myself (along with other Laker fans) still believed we would win the series.

Agreed that the Pistons loss buried this .4 shot and it hasn't meant much since that day. I still think we would end up losing even if Malone was healthy---we were just too old and slow in 2004 and by the end we just kept getting older and slower. The Pistons were taking care of business in the East while scoring in the high 60s and low 70s, they were just good at making opponents play their game. They barely beat a tough Pacers team right before the Finals, a Pacers team who I don't think we would have beaten either.

To the poster who compared the '04 loss with the '08 loss, I agree. '04 was very tough to swallow and the near future was hard to read back then. In '08, we knew we would be a beast for another few years mainly because we couldn't see a healthy Bynum combined with a prime Bryant and Gasol.
