RUMOR: Lakers plan to sign free agent Greg Monroe.

Post#1 » by jPHENOM5 » Wed May 14, 2014 4:00 pm

The Lakers are the other team most frequently mentioned among league executives when it comes to Monroe. If L.A. does not make any splashy moves around the draft, and if the Lakers are ready to concede that Carmelo Anthony is not coming, then they figure to target young, second-tier free agents—and Monroe is at the head of that list.

Speculation from Bleacher Report...sounds credible.

Interesting, I like Monroe but not sure that he's worth a max contract offer.

Depressing: That feeling when I have to go to Basketball Reference to research a player the Lakers are rumored to be thinking about as a "Major Free Agent Signing."

I think he is actually very good player and got his last year numbers lowered because of chuckster that is Josh Smith.

His stats/PER are pretty solid. Haven't seen him play a ton, but if we could get him at the right price, he might be a nice piece. Considering we have Kobe/Nash/Sacre signed up for next year...I'd say we could use as many 2nd/3rd tier players as we can find.

Also, I never underestimate the ability of the Lakers to mold a young player.

Would Detroit match an offer since they already have Drummond?

He's slow, prodding and about as unathletic as you get while being a non-factor in the paint on defense. Hardly the kind of guy we should be hedging our money on. Al Jefferson is a better Monroe and he went for $9 mil/yr. I'd much rather pay Pau less and keep him instead.

The article states that the general thinking is now that SVG is head of bball ops with the Pistons that they'll stick to building around Drummond and let Monroe walk.

Yeah, it seems like they'll want a sign and trade, which we have nothing to offer.

Couldn't Pau and Monroe be twin towers with Swaggy P staying in the roster. Assuming we get Smart we could have lineup of...

Smart/Nash
Kobe/Swaggy P
cheap FAs(Wes?, X?)
Pau Gasol/Ryan Kelly
Monroe/Sacre

Swaggy should go for 3-4 per year. Kelly for minimum contract.
Wes for 1 per year.

Pau could go for 8-10 per year. If we can go for him at 8 his first year and then up from there. That gets us at approximately at 64 million. Cap is supposed to be at 63.5 mil. With MLE which is 5 per year we can get player like Danny Granger, Aminu, maybe even Beasley(for minimum) so he can get his head straight finally with Kobe in town. For PG maybe Shaun Livingston?

I can tell you that the Pistons organization is VERY HIGH on Monroe (I work at the arena shhhhhh lol). Everything will be matched unless he gets a max offer. Team HIGH on Monroe not so much on Smith. Also can tell you Monroe is extremely skilled and could break out any year now. Smith ruined his productivity last year. With the right team Monroe easily could become an 18 and 12 guy.

If we are going to go twin towers, we need to find someone who is a lot more mobile, can play in the high post or be a good defensive anchor. Monroe is neither of those.
