Fernando Gonzalez, spanish play-by-play caller suing LAL/TWC

Post#1 » by Dr Aki » Sun Jun 1, 2014 2:52 pm

The lawyers for longtime Lakers Spanish-language radio play-by-play announcer Fernando Gonzalez held a news conference on behalf of their client on Friday outside of Los Angeles County Superior Court.

"He's a dedicated individual, dedicated to the Lakers, dedicated to the Lakers family," said attorney Lisa Maki of Gonzalez. "He suffered pretty brutal, racial segregation."

"The more he complained, the more he was retaliated against," said Maki of Gonzalez's increasing struggles, specifically over the last three years. "The last time he brought up these complaints, he lost a bunch of games [and] he lost a bunch of income, and that's not right. It's illegal. It's unfair and it's unjust."

"''Equal pay for equal work' may not hold up, because they have no one doing equal work to compare him with," said Simon. "Comparing Gonzalez to the English-language broadcasters -- they just don’t have comparable jobs. The English-language stations make a lot more money, have bigger audiences and generate more sponsorships."

I think that's where the case dies.

He demanded more money and they got someone else to do the job for the same money. Welcome to capitalism.

I'm not sure why OP chose 3 of the first 4 paragraphs to copy & paste, but he completely skipped the one that actually tells us the relevance of this story:

Gonzalez has filed a complaint against the Lakers, and partner Time Warner Cable, claiming he has been treated "differently from and less favorably than his Anglo-American counterparts in terms of wages, hours and conditions of employment."

Anyway, now that I know what this is about, I will add that though it appears to be a damning situation, at the end of the day he can't expect too much of a pay raise when the Lakers' Spanish stations don't do nearly as well as the English stations.

Pretty much. Capitalism is a b#tch, but there's nothing anyone can do about that... At least nothing an average Joe can do about it.
This is why I stopped asking my bosses for a raise, even after they guaranteed they'd give me one back in March of 2013. Fifteen months later they still haven't followed through on their guarantee, but they did threaten to fire me the last time I bothered them about it again.
Capitalism: you love it if you're wealthy; you hate it if you're poor.

yeah but when that happens u need to find another employer willing to pay you what youre worth. thats the upside of capitalism, because there is always more money to be made out there.
