How does cap space work?
My cba knowledge is kind of limited to the trade machine, so my apologies in advance. A lot of you guys have been talking about this year's cap space as an asset. How would that work? Can a team like the Bulls just send Carlos Boozer to us without getting matching salary in return?

cbafaq.com will answer all your CBA questions
FAQ #83 probably addresses your question.
http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q83
one thing to keep in mind about the lakers cap space is that they have to renounce the rights to all the players who count against the cap as a cap hold, which includes pau gasol and then jordan hill among others. players that are on the lakers books as cap holds also include karl malone, mitch richmond, ron harper, horace grant, and brian shaw among others too.

So essentially as long as we finish below the cap, Houston can send us Lin+Asik+pick and we can send back Marshon Brooks?

Re: How does cap space work?
Yeah you are right Bulls can essentially trade us Boozer (with an incentive like their 16th pick) for basically nothing from Lakers (they will get a TPE and probably a heavily protected 2nd pick). This trade could occur if Bulls don't want to amnesty Boozer and are pursing a max free agent this off-season like Melo.

Is it true that if we trade for lin and asik...even though their salaries are almost 29 mil for both, that only 16 counts against cap?

Why are Lin & Asik being mentioned......no way in hell we are even dealing with Houston, nobody wants that trash. What the hell is the infatuation with them ?

Are we allowed to renounce Pau's rights before the draft in order to make a deal happen? Otherwise we won't be able to draft a player of our choice.

Aren't you in favor of signing Monroe?
You must not value defense at all to not want Asik but want to throw the max at Monroe.

Yeah I backed Monroe, and not to twist it but I like what Asik brings defensively. His contract is what is whack as hell. You guys can't have it both ways....you guys want perfect contracts and perfect players.lakersin4 wrote:DEEP3CL wrote:Why are Lin & Asik being mentioned......no way in hell we are even dealing with Houston, nobody wants that trash. Re: How does cap space work?
He's an expiring 8mil on the cap contract, doesn't get much better. His paycheck is much higher, but the lakers showed that they don't really care about raw cash savings so why should fans?

As dock pointed out Asik only counts for 8M against the cap for 1 season.. If he had 4 years left at the max I'd stay away but we'd probably be able to keep him at a decent price with next years FA class being loaded with bigs & Dwight to Houston killing Asik's value. His current contract was only 8.4 per season & we shouldn't have to pay much more than that to keep him. It's a perimeter oriented league now offensively.. I wouldn't mind having a big like Asik who is willing to focus on defense & rebounding.

Re: How does cap space work?
I understand his cap hit, now I don't think he's no where near worth 8 mil, Morey throat slashed the Knicks and Bulls with the wicked deals he signed Lin and Asik to knowing full well the teams wouldn't match. Which was smart business by the Knicks and Bulls. Morey was a desperate man and got lucky with his gamble. But no way in hell Asik is worth 8mil.lakersin4 wrote:DEEP3CL wrote:Yeah I backed Monroe, and not to twist it but I like what Asik brings defensively. His contract is what is whack as hell. For a guy with limited offense, you don't pay that kind of money to. Now defensively yeah he's willing to mix it up which is something we need in the worst way.
