Lakers made $100 million last season, tops in NBA

Probably no surprise given their TV deal, but the Lakers were the most profitable team in the NBA last season according to a private league memo released earlier this month. They took first at $100.1 million, followed by Chicago in distant second at around $60 million, and roughly three times as much as No. 4 Boston. Wow.

Holy cow, the Lakers! They end up with that huge profit despite contributing a league-high $49 million to revenue-sharing. The league’s revenue-sharing is complex, with payouts and contributions tied to all sorts of variables — market size, profitability, earnings benchmarks, and other stuff. A few teams, including the Lakers and Knicks, play in markets so large they are disqualified from ever receiving revenue-sharing payouts.

What are the splits for team revenue, in terms of TV deal, merchandise, tickets and licensing? Zach Lowe mentioned that the Lakers had to pay 40 million into the revenue sharing system, so that can't be a source.

All the stars are taking less to play with each other in the city they want to be in anyways, might as well open the cap up and spread the wealth.

Where were the clippers at on this list? It'd be nice to know just how wrong most of the people on the GB were about the clippers overtaking the Lakers in popularity.
