How do you feel about the current state of the Lakers?

Post#1 » by iamworthy » Fri Jul 4, 2014 4:18 am

As laker fans how do you feel about the current state of the Lakers? Are you happy with the coaching search? Although it really feels like at this point Byron Scott is a shoe in. Are you happy with the free agents we are going after and the type of money we are throwing around? Are you happy with our draft pick?

Coaching search: Undecided on how I feel. I hope that a valuable coach is out there that we do not know of. However, if it's Byron I'll give him a shot.

Free Agents: I am 100% behind management. I feel like you have to go after the best players if you have a shot. I know many in this forum continue to say their is no way we get LeBron and Melo but I think we should leave it to the professionals to decide. If we can get both we have to try and lakers brass is trying. If we could add Bron, Melo, or Bosh to our team we have to. I support Jimmy, Mitch and Jeanie. I hope we can move on soon though if we strike out and go after others before they sign elswhere.

Draft pick: I am extremely satisfied. Randle is going to be a BEAST!

Random thought: I wonder if the lakers have considered moving Randle if we can get Bron and/or Melo in a sign and trade. Not a fan of this but if we can get both then you have to do it.

I think it's right to bring in a veteran coach who been around the league for a while to coach Kobe. If Bryon Scott is the HC, then I'm ok, not over joyed or bummed.

Draft pick - I'm very happy about, they could possibly have one of the best players in the draft.

FA - to be continued . Looks like they are going for the big chips ala Jerry Buss style. They bet big and win big, but it could be a huge swing and miss. Lets see what takes place.

thread tittle: in your mind the state of the Lakers is….

coaching search: I think they are being smart about it. not committing on a coach until they have a lock on a max player is smart me thinks.

Free agent search: Lebron "richards" around too much with teams so yeah go hard for the next best thing. lock up Melo long term then go balls to the wall in 16'.

draft pick: i'm of the Phil Jackson school of not liking rookies, but I hear good things about Randle so that balances out to indifference for me.

I'm happy they're trying with their big name FA target but I do not think they have a legitimate backup plan if things fail, which all likelihood looks that way. We're kinda chasing the impossible dream with Melo and or James

Draft pick: Loved it

Coaching Search: I'm alright with it but I don't like the lack of options and the fact that we might be giving the job to a never-been who coached a team to 26 straight losses.

FA Search: Lack of flexibility and not being proactive is my biggest concern with the Lakers, we have a natural advantage of a great city, historical organization and owners with deep pockets yet seem intent on hitching ourselves to the Kobe wagon whether good, bad or broken.

1. It's a little frustrating, but if it were up to me I'd be patient and slowly build a strong team ready to contend for a championship in the near future.
2. Eh, not really. I was a big fan of Lionel Hollins, but that obviously won't work out now. If Scott is the coach (which is what it looks like) I'm content with that.
3. I'm not really sold on the Lakers offer on Melo. They are letting Kobe dictate what should happen instead of making moves based on what will be best post-Kobe era. The Lakers should just accept the fact that Kobe is unlikely to win another ring. I feel like if Melo lands in L.A., it could go really bad or the move would surprise many and go really good.
4. Randle was a good and safe pick for the Lakers. I think he will have a good rookie season w/ the Lakers.

How do you feel about the current state of the Lakers?

I would much, much rather have seen us start with a true rebuild by letting Kobe walk. The last Laker I was emotionally attached to was Magic Johnson. So if it was up to me, it would have been thanks for so many great memories and good luck, see you back in five for your jersey retirement and statue unveiling. Unfortunately we F'd that up by overpaying him -- which is even more frustrating seeing guys like Duncan and Dirk willingly sacrifice -- so we're stuck for at least another two years, four if we blow our wad on a redundant, overpaid star like Melo.

Are you happy with the coaching search?

Totally indifferent. We have a roster that no amount of coaching is going to make up for. Frankly, I don't think it matters much at this point.

Are you happy with the free agents we are going after and the type of money we are throwing around?

No. A single big-name guy isn't going to get us back where we want to go. Indeed, it's just throwing good money after bad following Bryant's ridiculous extension. This isn't sound, healthy rebuilding, it's panicky knee jerking akin to the same junk that's had the Knicks in a cycle of mediocrity for more than a decade. I saw someone in the another thread praising the Lakers for sticking to the plan of signing Anthony, then gearing up for Durant in 2016 after Kobe retires. That's not a plan -- that's sheer, unadulterated fantasy.

Are you happy with our draft pick?

Yes. I don't follow college ball hardly at all, and it seems impossible to be able to gauge what to expect from a teenage kid with one year of college experience. But I think there's a good chance we got the steal of the draft with Randle slipping to seven. Very interested to see what kind of game this kid has at the NBA level.

I feel excited. We have a building block for the future (Randle), we have an excellent GM (Kupchak), and we have our two main owners (Jeanie and Jim) on the same page.

Current state is fine, flexibility is there with one of the top GMs in the biz and owners willing to spend. Also #CountOnKobe

Are you happy with the coaching search?

Byron Scott is a pretty meh hire to me, but I think he'd be motivated as he understands what Laker Lore is all about and maybe he'll surprise us. I honestly feel like there's a coach or two out there that hasn't been mentioned at all that we've been in contact with. Someone in the college ranks that would be part of our pitch to the major free agents.

Are you happy with the free agents we are going after and the type of money we are throwing around?

Trying to pair Carmelo and LeBron is a good move. Maxing out Lebron would be fine with me, little iffy on giving it to Melo by himself. Not too interested in Pau returning unless he takes a massive paycut. Other than that, there's nothing to be down about yet. Most of the major free agents will be in a holding pattern until the Melo/Bron dominoes fall and I think Mitch and Co. realize that. You look at the inflated contracts that have been handed out so far in free agency and we're already a step ahead of the curve by not overpaying for lower tiered players.

Are you happy with our draft pick?

Extremely. Hardworking, humble kid who has a Kobe-esque motor and drive. He will be a matchup nightmare for opposing PFs for years to come.

IMO, the Lakers are the greatest franchise in sports... It'd take a lot more than anything that could possibly happen this off-season to make me worry too much about the current state of the team.

I'm happy about Randle and the fact that we're going all in to attract the top free agents. The coach will follow.

1.You gotta be patient, unlike the Celtics, Lakers and Heat of past champions put together quickly, to build a team with a long window will take time and getting a lot of moves right.I'd rather build for a 6-9 year window than these short windows you see now. Getting Randle was the first part of the foundation.

2. I'm all good with the search.....no need to rush, doing that got us two bad hires. And id rather take Scott no matter what some here who've probably never even coached a high school squad say about it. Yeah Byron had some stinky results in Cleveland. But he was great at a few things....developing rookies who are now franchise changing player. And his teams in NO and NJ were sound offensively. Forget these unproven NBA prospects like Messina or Blatt these guys will struggle on a few fronts. It's about commanding the locker room and knowing what makes who tick.
And get off Messina he joining the Spurs so no need to keep bringing him up.

3.Going after the big guns are obvious, and we'll have to continue going after them until we land one. But since we haven't signed one guy we can't fully evaluate that until we see some signings.

4.Randle gonna be a All Star in 3 years.....mark my words. So hell yeah I'm happy with that, he was the guy I wanted all along.

1. I'm really meh about our current status. I have a strong feeling we won't really be strong contenders till 2016 unless bron signs here. It's not happening if melo signs here so really only one player can put us to the top and that is bron bron and I don't think he leaves Mia. Having that in mind, Kobes contract comes off in 2016 so to me his contract doesn't really affect us much right now. In 2016 we can go after durant with tons of cap space if we play our hand right this FA and the next. Patience is key right now.

2. I would prefer a young coach who can grow with a young core but right now we only really have 1 young player and that is Randle. I don't mind at all waiting the decision out still we have singed some FA"s

3. Glad that we are trying to swing for the fences. May hit a homer or strike out, if so, oh well, we tried.

4. LOVE Randle. Dude just has beast written all over him and has all the confidence to back it up. I look forward to watching the dude grow with us in the next couple of years. Really hope he doesn't get traded since he really wants to be in LA. Those are the special ones, the ones that want to be here

I feel good about things...

We had an amazing run for an incredibly long time, through Shaq/Kobe to the last three runs in the finals. No fan can complain about those times...

They tried to reload on the fly, Jackson retired, a new hyper restrictive CBA was put in place drastically changing the rules/design for how to build a winning team, The failed CP3 trade that turned the team upside down, Buss passed away, Kobe was injured, there's been some growing pains as expected, you can't have that type of extended run without the bill coming due at some point...

To be in the position they are in today and the next 2 years financially, to have remodeled the foundation of how they'll conduct the business of basketball in the time frame they have is actually sort of remarkable...

I'm fairly impatient with regards to the coaching search though Mitch Kupchak has said he'll wrap this up early July, so my assumption is a coach will be in place a week from now. My hope was for the Lakers to hire Stan Van Gundy, but the offer from Detroit was too great even for the Lakers as SVG was given a lot of power there. I'm not high on Byron Scott as chances are he won't even be here in a few years.

Without a 1st round pick, there's no reason to tank. I'm sure the Lakers are going hard after LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony even if we don't read too much about it at times. With Melo though, the team would need a good playmaking PG to help him get some open looks.

Happy with the Julius Randle pick. I feel he can be a solid starter averaging 17-19ppg/11reb/2ast/1stl/1blk at 53%. At his position, he can be solid in the post and a solid shooter where he does need to be able to use both hands where again, he'll need someone facilitating to have some assisted baskets. Defensively, he'll be ok where he's athletic enough to switch at times and box out for rebounds. Most likely will be a 1-5 time all-star which is nothing to be ashamed of.

I thought our coaching search was kind of a joke. The feeling I got from reading quotes from Mitch was that we were going to think outside the box on the coaching hire. Do a little more than what he did. In the end it seems like we, (the Lakers) followed the same procedure as they always do. I thought things were going to be different. If Scott is the hire Im cool with that but that seemed like the logical choice all along. I thought it was going to be a new face. But hey, thats the lakers taking care of one of their own. I am 100% happy with Randle. No complaints there.
