Former Lakers star Michael Cooper has been diagnosed with early-stage tongue cancer and will take a leave of absence from his duties as coach of the WNBA team in Atlanta.
Cooper is expected to recover fully after surgery this week at Emory University.
"I know I'm in good hands," he said in a statement released by the Atlanta Dream. "I'm fortunate that my condition was diagnosed early."...

Coop is such a nice guy. I remember I was walking near the Galen Center and I was on the other side of the street of him and I yelled out, "Mr. Cooper!" and he turned and waved at me. Definitely will pray for him and I hope he gets well soon.

Emory University is a top facility for cancer care. Hope Coop gets well soon since this was fortunately an early diagnosis.

I know that smoking isn't always the reason for cancers, but is he a smoker or tobacco chewer?
