I'm starting up my offseason preview and wanted to get some info and feedback from you guys before I got going.
So, I come to you folks.
How do you see your depth chart breaking down?
What are the major story lines to your team this year?
How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
Tell me a little about your coaching situation.
Thanks in advance.

Lin - Nash - Clarkson
Kobe - Young
Johnson - Henry
Boozer - Randle - Kelly
Hill - Davis - Sacre
What are the major story lines to your team this year?
Kobe's return will be the biggest storyline followed by how Lin does in a bigger role, any other attention might be drawn from how well Randle develops and if he can push himself into the rookie of the year conversation. There's also bound to be some intrigue about how Jordan Hill does with more money and responsibility.
How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
I can see us be around 10th - 12th in the West.
Tell me a little about your coaching situation.
No one really knows at the moment, the front office promised a statement hire but Byron Scott appears to be the favorite, which is a statement alright but in all the wrong ways. Frankly no coach would willingly put himself through a team rolling season to season without any big contracts, continuity or a franchise center piece that is ancient/unhealthy.

Our depth at the 3 is shallow defensively. We'll have to depend on Wes Johnson a lot, Xavier Henry has to show some defensive improvement. Offensively at the 3 we have enough and it becomes interchangeable with Kobe playing there some.
jazzfan1971 wrote:What are the major story lines to your team this year?
With the Lakers it'll be a multitude of stories the media will bite on. From Kobe being back, to Lin to Nash, the development of Julius Randle and of course our contracts being limited as it pertains to free agency for 2015.
jazzfan1971 wrote:How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
Unlike the national media who I don't put much credibility in because of their ignorance ( some just too young and have never played the game on any levels are not basketball experts in my opinion ), I see this team being very very competitive. Barring injuries that aren't handicapping the team, we can compete for anywhere from the 6th to 8th seed. People say the roster isn't that good, but I see ball players that are hungry to prove they're ready to take the next step.
jazzfan1971 wrote:Tell me a little about your coaching situation.
By all accounts it looks to be Byron Scott, who according to some fans here don't want. But they don't understand the pickings are slimmer than ever in the coaching ranks, and I'm not big on hiring some unknown just because he did well in Euro Leagues. Those leagues are known to not focus on defense. And this is where we need to refocus our efforts more than any team in our conference. But I'm good with Scott, and if hired I think he should bring on Mark Madsen as an assistant. I think he's going to be a good NBA coach some day. People rave here about wanting something new, well Mark is right in our back pocket already.

Slava is spot on here.
Except where we finish. I'm sticking to my sig ... 5th-7th seed as long as stay reasonably healthy

Slava nailed this easily.
if chemistry clicks, Lakers are 6-8. Kobe alone can take anyone into the playoffs. They got Lin Randle and Boozer now.
Underdog, cinderella story theme possible.

Projected Depth Chart
----------------------------
PG - Jeremy Lin, Steve Nash, Clarkson?
SG - Kobe Bryant, Nick Young
SF - Wesley Johnson, Xavier Henry
PF - Carlos Boozer, Julius Randle, Ryan Kelly
C - Jordan Hill, Ed Davis, Robert Sacre
Trading Block: Expiring contract. If someone is looking to clear cap room and is willing to pay the price I think the Lakers would be happy to help.
Position Battle: Carlos Boozer vs. Julius Randle. In the run up to the draft I often thought that Randle would end up being a player a lot like Boozer. It's interesting that they could be fighting for minutes this season. I don't think it would take much out of Randle to gain the starting job.
Mystery Man: Jordan Hill. Hill has played in 259 NBA games, of which he's only started in 52. Last year he started 9 games at center giving about 17 points, 10 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 1 steal, and 1.6 assists. I'm not sure he can keep that up over the course of a season, but, then again someone has to put up stats on the Lakers so who knows?
Floppymusings:
I like the Lin pickup. And Kobe is going to singlehandedly win a few close games in the 4th like he always does. I actually don't believe my win/loss projection below - I think they will 'overachieve'. But they are still going to be the worst team in the west regardless.
Jazzfanramblings:
Has beens, shoulda beens, and never weres. I'm not sure if that's a quote or just something I made up, but, it's what bubbled to the top of my mind when I was looking at the Lakers roster. Kobe, Nash, and Boozer are the has beens. MVP and Allstar level players who just aren't what they used to be anymore. They have a nice collection of players that shoulda been as well. All of Johnson, Henry, Hill, and Davis were guys that I liked coming out of college who just never seemed to reach the level I had hoped for them. And of course the never weres, every team has a collection of those guys. It's definitely a motley crew. And I'm not entirely sure how it will perform on the court. The potential is there to be good, if everything goes just so. But, there is also the potential to just be a dumpster fire.
Myself, I have them fighting with the Jazz for worst record in the West. I think it's all about next year for the Lakers at any rate. They'll be looking at a nice draft pick and a boatload of cap room to surround or supplant Kobe next year. That's the reason I'm leaning more towards dumpster fire. But, if the plan is that then why throw money at Boozer, even for a year? So, I really don't have a good feel for what they are trying to do. It seems a bit directionless to me.
Projected record - 15/67

Would guarantee the lakers keep their pick so not the worst thing in the world.
Just kinda crazy to think that after upgrading pretty much across the board they're going to be 12 wins worse.

The only way I can see them getting 15 wins is if Kobe and Lin both go down with season ending injuries in the preseason forcing Steve Nash to start at PG and play 35 minutes a game.
But that'd be cool if we get to keep our pick too. There are some legit centers that would pair up nicely with Randle.

Would absolutely not mind 15 wins since we'll keep our pick and possibly contend for no.1 overall pick
That being said, that analysis is utter garbage and ludicrous... especially the projection, dear lord, not even me as a pessimist ,would see us winning 15 **** games

OT question, if we end up with the 4th worst record, but drop down to 6th in the lotto, do we lose the pick?
BTW i think Jazzfan was catering to the trolls in the GB to protect his rep.

15 wins? Now that would be an epic season!
Would be strange to watch the average Laker fan have to realize that MDA won almost double the games than one of Showtime's complementary men--with a better roster.
If we're battling for the playoffs that has to put us closer to 45 wins...what kind of crow will jazzfan eat after a 30 game turnaround?
