Will Steve Nash ever show up this season?

Post#1 » by Laker_Kid » Wed Jan 28, 2015 3:53 am

Been saying this ever since we acquired him, i really like Nash as the person and player he was, but not the Nash we acquired and the trade that was made. I felt he would never click with us from the beginning and knew he wouldnt be able to sustain his health for the duration of his contract. What a total waste.

With that said, i thought he could still make our money's worth by coming in as an assistant coach of sorts. But halfway through the season, dude is still on vacation. Seriously, what is up with this guy? Is there some kind of beef with him and management?

Sorry, i read an article and it reminded me of how infuriating this is. lol.

Mitch mentioned a while back about Nash and only really expecting him to be playing 2 out of the 3 years on his contract. When asked by reporters what Nash should do, Mitch said he should get away from basketball. To me that was it and we would never see Nash near the court again.

Whatever that article, it's all driven by the media. Nash was a horrible trade for the Lakers. Management has accepted it and moved on. So should the media and the rest of the fans.

Didn't he already come by just to collect his pay check?

Incredible how the LA Sports media have decided to give Nash a complete pass for being MIA. Is it really that hard to drive to Staples Center? Hell, we have a young PG in Clarkson who could definitely learn something from him.

I don't recall Mitch saying he only expected 2 out of the 3years but if that's the case then Mitch/Jim dropped the ball on that, they should've at least not fully guaranteed the contract for the last year and given themselves an out.

Nowadays direct deposit takes care of that for you. Nash can just bank by phone while on the gold course.

But seriously, if everyone (Laker org and Nash) basically comes to the conclusion that it's not necessary for Nash to show up just to show up, that's fine with me. How much impact will he really have? I get the 'mentoring the young guards' thing, but in actuality I'm not sure. The guy never really established any kind of presence or foothold in Los Angeles, we barely saw him play and he was only a shadow of his former self, and I think that reduces the impact he might have as a coach type. I think if he had been in Phoenix it might have played out differently.

But is it even really necessary? As long as they feel Nash did his honest best in try to rehab and get on the floor, I think it's fine for Lakers to just say, "hey, sorry it didn't work out, enjoy your time off after a long career."

Nash didn't quit on the team, his body did.

don't care how, the word quit is involved....not necessarily a great example but if I hired you to build my house and you get injured on the job and cant continue to build should I continue paying you? anyways I know that's not how bball/sports contract work but I would've had a lot more respect for Nash if didn't do what he did last season (playing more the 10 game min) and this season (not accepting facts and taking medical retirement), both cases he would still get his money but we would've at least gotten some cap relieve from it. But no, his ego had to get in the way and he had to do "whats best for him"

How nice of Nash to occasionally text Jordan Clarkson some advice. Steve Nash is under contract for the Los Angeles Lakers, and yet he's nowhere to be seen. Why? Injury? Okay, that means he can't play, not that he should essentially be vacationing on the Lakers' dime. I hate that he's being permitted to do this. He at least needs to be on the bench with the rest of the team.

Damn, I wish I had a job like that, where I could get paid $10 million a year to do nothing.

We got an injury exception ($4.5 million) for him so whatever, just move on.

The less I see of Nash the better.. He seems to be healthier away anyways.

He's done, move on. We have to keep tanking to protect our draft pick because of Mr. Vacation. Can't wait until this whole nightmare is over.

As you say, I don't think your example is necessarily apt, in that your probably paying for a completed project, rather than employing him directly. NBA contracts are guaranteed anyway. But...I completely agree with you regarding his contract status and playing situation last year- it seemed pretty obvious there was no way he could last even half a season, much less a full season, and should have worked something out with the team and take the medical retirement.

If the Lakers really wanted him to show up in a coaching/mentoring type capacity for the entire year, and Nash refused, then I would be pissed at him about this as well. But from hearing everyone, that doesn't seem to be the case (maybe I'm wrong.) It seems like the Lakers are fine basically just moving on, so what Nash does for the rest of the year doesn't really bother me.
