Like having players on the squad that we can see develop long term and don't need to make an immediate impact.

Umm..can't be bad but need more information on how much is guaranteed for how long. Lakers.com says multi-year deal but I'll wait for someone like Pincus to tweet the terms.

EL SEGUNDO – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed center Robert Upshaw to a multi-year contract, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Good news is that it means he's probably met those markers Mitch and co. set for him in order to earn a camp contract like Eric said.

Baxter Holmes @BaxterHolmes
Am told the terms on Robert Upshaw’s deal with LAL include a small partial guarantee for the first year & the second year is non-guaranteed.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with this agreement. The Lakers front office have obviously been monitoring his work ethic/off court activity etc and are satisfied enough to sign Upshaw. Whether Fully, partially or non guaranteed I have faith he's been given what's appropriate.

It seems like Upsaw is a lock to make the roster.. there is a gonna be a few players left out deserving of a spot unless a trade opens up to create a few more roster spots and even then I don't see the Lakers going through that path unless they are absolutely convinced that they have no shot at the playoffs... and are willing to sign.. training-camp players to fill out the roster.

I think he is likely to get cut,

Clarkson-Huertas
Williams-Russell-JBrown-Frazier
Bryant-Young-ABrown
Bass-Randle-Kelly-Nance-Holmes
Hibbert-Black-Sacre-Upshaw

Holmes, Frazier and Upshaw will get cut and offered a dleague deal, if they want it, with the D-fenders
The other 15 are either more guaranteed or totally guaranteed, unless there is a trade, I dont see how Upshaw makes it.

Some NBA teams have figured out an interesting work around to get experienced players into their system using partially guaranteed NBA minimum deals as part of training camp.

For example, last season the Orlando Magic gave NBA minimum deals to Seth Curry, Peyton Siva and Kadeem Batts, all with partial guarantees. The agreement between the team and the players was that they would be cut and claimed by the Bayhawks. Curry and Batts’ guarantees were $150,000 each, while Siva received $100,000. All three were around the Magic for training camp, but did not participate and were cut and played out the season in Erie, collecting their full value from Orlando plus the salary allocated to them in the D-League.

NBA teams can sign an unlimited number of minimum salary deals, with only the guaranteed portion counting against the salary cap and luxury tax.

The Dallas Mavericks signed former Marquette stand out Jamil Wilson to a four-year minimum deal with only $50,000 guaranteed. The plan is for Wilson to come to camp with the Mavericks, but its far more likely he’ll be cut and play out the season with the Texas Legends in Frisco.

The concept of a partial guarantee on a camp deal in exchange for agreeing to play out the season in the D-League is increasing, so some of the pressure to adjust salaries may come down. However, there is a sense that even with teams getting smarter about how to pay for talent, the tiered system in the D-League is expected to go up as more teams and revenue come into the league.

Welcome to the new third rounders of the nba. Frazier, Holmes, and Upshaw may be taken care of that way in the NBDL and told to show loyalty. They can get high 8 figures to be Dfenders

They buy their loyalty as far as keeping them away from entering the d-league draft and have them agree to go straight to your d-league affiliate as an affiliate player, but if another NBA team comes knocking with an NBA contract they'll be snatched up very quickly.

Wouldn't thay be a breach of contract doc? Say if Upshaw does go that route and play for the DFenders and Clippers wanted a back up C, they can just go ahead and grab him if he agrees?

In the past they've had bigs work out w/ Kareem, now that Kobe/Shaq feud is squashed, can Shaq coach our bigs?

nah, wouldn't be breach of contract because he'd have already been cut by the lakers so there is no contract to breach.

the idea behind these small guarantee contracts is that even when you cut a player, they still get paid more than they would the entire year as a d-league player. That way, when you cut them, they'll be up for joining your d-league team as an affiliate player rather than entering the d-league draft and available to any d-league team.

As a d-league affiliate player though, you're free to sign with an nba team at any time because you're a free agent with no nba contract.

I would prefer Upshaw and his raw potential over Sacre. I really hope he makes the 15 man roster. Upshaw could be this years Jordan Clarkson (I'm an optimist when it comes to the Lakers). Upshaw is a legit 7 with Mutumbo like blocking ability. Kid just needs to stay away from the drugs and the life.

After thinking through... This signing could end up being a huge positive... anytime you sign a lottery talent to your roster it's always exciting.. But someone needs to get traded...

Kelly
Sacre
Nance
Bass
Black
Hibbert
Upsaw
Randle
Holmes

The Lakers know they need to trade some of those players to open up minutes id hate to see Upsaw cut or sent to the d-league cause of the managements lack of compence to unload players.

In a real world I expect to see a few trades happen before the season starts.. its not rocket science to Speculate that the team needs to make a few deals.

So basically right now, we're just holding on to his loyalty if ever he's cut and sent to the DFenders. I think he'll repay the FOs patience and trust and wait for them. I've actually read about teams doing this unguaranteed deals then sending players to affiliate teams to cut costs and hope those players will just wait for the call up.
