Kobe flew out to be by Lamar's side during his recent health scare, weird he didn't list him as a friend whenever the piece in the OP was written.

I think naming guys like LO and Shaq would distract the intended audience from the purpose of this and all the retirement articles. Namely, it would become more about his relationship with LO and Shaq and less about the completion of his 20 yr career. I think those other articles will come later.

I've visited colleagues in the hospital to lend support that I consider a friend but not considered them really "A Friend" if you know what I mean.... And he didn't fly there, the Lakers were in Vegas that day.

I guess it's all in how you look at the word "friend"

the info is from a foreword that Kobe wrote for Caron's autobiography. The context isn't really kobes retirement or his 20 yr career.

People are definitely looking too much into the whole LO hospital visit. It's exactly like having a work friend who you relate to work wise. In terms of basketball Kobe and LO were great together, probably had lots of long talks about the game. Off the court though they're not necessarily "friends". Still, you're going to visit that guy in the hospital if he's right down the street because of your work history together.
