Re: Demar DeRozan Worth The Max? Lakers considering signing Demar.
I'll take him. Bottom line is.. we need players. It's up to the coaching staff to get line-ups and surrounding pieces to make it all mesh together. We have about 5 (not including Kobe) NBA players on our roster right now: Russell, Clarkson, Randle, Nance and Bass.
I'll take DeRozan. Get some shooters and defensive front court players and we're at a much better position.
Having said all that, is he priority number 1? No, but he's not far off from there.

It's very very hard to get excited about this development. Theoretically the lack of shooting that would surround Russell would be alarming and discouraging.

This is why firing Byron is putting a bandaid on a gaping wound. Lakers management is clueless.

The sadness of it all is that this is almost inevitable. Even though Ujiri loves to keep all his free agents instead of letting them walk for free, he's not going to offer a $25 mil a season untradeable deal to Derozan. Mitch will and present him with a **** eating grin suggesting that we signed a major FA and the spiritual successor to Kobe.
We'll be back to square 1 with a budget Kobe hijacking possessions and launching mid range jumpers while Russell spots up in the corner for a pass that never arrives. This ass backwards front office needs an overhaul.

Could you imagine if they also kept Byron? His crush on Derozan would be of historical proportions. Mid range/iso bonanza!

You all are missing the main reason. Kobe gone = major void left to draw in ticket sales. Sign "promising" LA-native Shooting guard = revitalized ticket sales. Business.
Nobody is paying $150 a pop to sit in the Upper Deck to watch Lou Williams score 25 a game.

Derozan seems to be a much better playmaker for others this season.

But replacing DeRozan would be hard. He has gotten about as good as any guard can get without a 3-point shot -- a hole in his game Toronto doesn't feel as much, now that all their power forwards can shoot 3s. A year or two ago, most teams would have run away from a DeRozan max deal. Hell, we all pilloried Colangelo for paying him $9 million per season in the fall of 2012. Back then, DeRozan was a low-IQ passer who barely ran the pick-and-roll; he shot 32-of-90 on that play in 2011-12, with a high turnover rate and few assists, per Synergy Sports.
Today, DeRozan runs as many as Lowry, and he's among the half-dozen most efficient pick-and-roll ball-handlers in the league, per Synergy. He has hit 98-of-197 shots out of the pick-and-roll this season, and he's dishing dimes at a career-best rate.

If the primary objective is to sell tickets, we can always bring back Lin and give him free reign. He'll put up some good box stats and the arena would always be full with great media publicity after every game.

First off, I love Zach Lowe but he's never been much of an insider scoop kinda guy, how does he know we're going to do this?
I posted this in the other thread, I don't think Derozan is a good fit on this current team but I think he's been terrific this season.

What's Lowe's actual quote? Was this on his podcast? Because I don't trust the wiretap's adaptations.

Read the article, it's an article on Toronto and it really only has 1 line about the Lakers:
(Talking about what Toronto will do if they lose early in the playoffs again)
That starts with DeRozan, a lock to decline his option and hit free agency this summer. A bunch of teams, including DeRozan's hometown Lakers, are prepared to offer him a max deal starting at $25 million per season, and the Raptors know they will have to spend big to keep him.

This is the corner we have backed ourselves into. We must acquire talent. And he is the next best available. There is very low patience in developing. At this point, if he is the next best available on the board, we have to get him. Also, its a feel good PR move, because hes a local LA kid. So its a win with the locals. Is he worth it? At this point, we have no choice. We must acquire talent, experienced hometown talent is a plus.

This was about as easy to see coming as little Bobbi Kristina (who watched her parents get lit daily) eventually becoming a drug addict ... or (severely addicted to sugar) Lamar Odom eventually having a substance abuse problem.
