What Do Lakers Fans Really Think Of DeMar DeRozan
Raptors fan here -
Curious to know what you Lakers fans really think of DeMar DeRozan. Obviously a tone of speculation that its you guys or us that give him a max contract.
Personally, having watched almost every game the last 5 years, if the lakers offer a max deal, I hope we don't match.
With the momentum of the high lottery pick, talks of Cousins, do you guys actually want to spend that type of money on DD?

If push comes to shove i would take him, but not that keen either. His 3pt game is lacking and he is a bit of a chucker, though this year he was a lot better in this regard and he had a career year.
Also my main concern would be can he play S.F effectively, because our backcourt is small

Hes a toyota who will get a lexus contract.
We've been used to a Lamborghini for 20 years.
Even a Maserati like Jimmy Butler wouldn't cut it.

Solid analogy.
I like DeRozan, I've seen a ton of him since I'm from Canada and watch Raptors games regularly. My concerns are the same as the Raptors fans concerns. Would be interesting to see how he is with a different coach such as Luke. But, we've seen isolation ball for 20 years -- not sure the Lakers want to go back to that, especially when the isolation ball isn't Kobe.
With that said, if he were to come to the Lakers in the off-season, I'd be excited. He's a good piece, he just can't be the MAIN piece in my opinion.

If Buss thinks that Lou Williams is apart of the core, why the heck would we overpay for an overrated shooting guard?

Typical top thirty-ish player that the market dictates is worth a max contract which subsequently limits flexibility for whichever team that's dumb enough to give it.
The Lakers have been rejected so many times that I'm prepared that they will settle down with the fat chick that you know was always available and knock her up and be screwed.

Option 15 or so....
would rather have Bazemore.
DD isn't the defensive guard we need. In fact, he stinks on defense

I dont understand fascination with him in some big lakers forum.
He is like a very poorman version of Kobe. I prefer Bazemore or another defensive guard.

With Russell and Randle you need that third piece to be able to not only score, but, more importantly, defend.
"That dude" who'll get all "that money" from the Lakers has to set and maintain the defensive tone -- ideally he needs to be significantly better than Randle and Russell on defense.
If only DeRozan had a spirit on that end ...
I'd be for it then ... even with and despite his insecurities on offense.

For the money, and the defensive tone-setting ability, I'd rather sign Lance Stephenson. I'm serious.

Re: What Do Lakers Fans Really Think Of DeMar DeRozan
a lot of LA fans are enamored by the fact that hes an LA boy and weigh that into their justification for signing him. personally, i feel his type of game is what we want to steer way from this off season, given our new coach and the philosophies he will be bringing. DD is a score-first player, who goes hot and cold with his desire to pass the ball. that wouldnt be the end of the world, but given his low conversion rate and the soon-to-be implemented team ball, its hard to justify brinigh him to this team of youngetsrs. Had his defense been on the more respectable end, then yes, there would be more to considere.
but to give DD the benefit of the doubt. Dwanye casey runs a very generic offense, that promotes isolation. maybe in a system that promotes team-oriented play, his game will shine. for the asking price, though, id rather not find out.

Re: What Do Lakers Fans Really Think Of DeMar DeRozan
I can only speak for myself, but realistically, signing Derozan to the max is just a not a championship move, and call us Laker fan spoiled but the last thing we want is a second round exit team yearly (at best, first round exit and barely missing the playoffs is probably more likely in the west, even with Derozan and other vets and improvement from the young guys).
Basically, I would only want Derozan is if his status as an allstar player is intriguing enough to the Durant's, Cousins,Westbrooks, Paul Georges etc of the world and the Lakers have a move set up to get a player like that, but that player demands a Derozan level player or he wouldn't agree to the move. And it sounds a little ridiculous and harsh and plays on the steorotype of Laker fans being spoiled and thinking they could get the superstar always (and we obviously can't....looking at the past few offseasons), but I rather keep options open for future summers than commit to Derozan.
Signing Derozan to the max right now would be my equivelent of the Knicks signing Amare in 2010. Rebuilding big city team, trying to get a big name at any cost, not worrying about fit or the future. (Amare was definitely a better player than Derozan, but he also had the injury concerns....a give and take, and both players probably only considering the big market team as it's their home town and of course, a big market). Point being, if the Knicks didn't give Amare that attrocious, they would have been major players in the CP3, Dwill, Dwight, sweepstakes. Of course, I guess an argument can be made that Melo wouldn't have wanted to go to NY if Amare wasn't there....so of course the hindsight game can be played both ways, but I just don't like the idea of commiting to a player that's hard to build around (sg who can't shoot, big man who doesn't play defense), unless you have the other necessary pieces in place. No nba team will ever win a championship with Demar Derozan as it's best player.....ever. period. So signing Derozan would mean two things ;
1. We believe we can, or we will get than true number one guy via free agency, and Derozan is the piece that will help lure him there. OR
2. We believe that our young guys will take the next step and Derozan is the piece that'll help get them in a winning culture while they develop (sort of like David Lee and the Warriors, who we all remember wasn't a big part of the championship team last year, which would be the case in a best case scenario (Randle/Russell/Pick turn into a legitimate championship trio, which would be atleast five years down the line, by the time Derozan is 31, and is declining).
I think, again personally, the risk of being a treadmill team far surpasses my faith in Derozan being a guy that could attract a top FA, so for option 1, I have to see it to believe it, like I said, so I would not sign him.
Regarding option 2, again, the risk is far greater my faith that our young guys will be that #1 type of guy. If this was next year, and we had kept our pick who had a promising rookie season, and Dlo/Randle took the next step in their development, and Derozan was our best option, maybe I would see it different, but for now, that's where I stand.
We finally have a roster without a ball stopping, low efficiency (the past few years of course), high volume player who is taking the majority of our cap. We just got rid a coach whose offense consisted on isolations and replaced him with plans of a space/movement/passing/shooting. Derozan would be the definition of one step forward, two steps back.
AAAAAAAAAND all that being said, unfortunately with our FO dysfunctional nature and Jim's ridiculous dedication to meet his more ridiculous self-imposed deadline, I have no doubt once we strike out on Durant we are going to go after Derozan hard, and I have no doubt he's going to give us heavy consideration. I just hope his loyalty and love for Toronto, plus the obviously better roster for atleast next year, gives you guys the edge and he continues the trend of FA rejecting us.

I guess if Lou Williams, nick young, and Jordan Clarkson all leave... DD can come in and fill a role.
But we would still need to get that defensive guard and wing we need...
Pretty much a hard pass...

Pretty much this.
I wouldn't mind the Lakers signing him if he took less than max n was coming with another star.

Please no, please. The dude is a very limited player who can only score and even that he sucks at. I hate watching this guys game. Fill that in with his "im a beast" attitude and that is a player I want no where near my team for any sort of money. We need to get high character players who can help in a team game. Not a one dimensional player like derozan. Im with slava, I rather have JR Smith, atleast the dudes shot doesn't look like a sling shot.

Re: What Do Lakers Fans Really Think Of DeMar DeRozan
Definitely pass. Hes selfish player, poor defender, really bad fit and of course choker in PO. Even if we lose pick this year i really prefer avoid send max offer to players like : DDR, Barnes, Batum, Parsons. Cause this means mediocore for next years and we will have not cap space in 2018.
Give Walton some smaller pieces - like 40/2 for Baze. 40/2 for Ezeli. They are good fit to our young players.
FA 2017, and 2018 (Cousins and PG!) are much better than 2016. Develop young players under Luke and wait for 2017 or 2018.

Yeah, I don't see much point in signing DeRozen right now... Especially on the money he's likely to demand.
So to answer the OP question... Not a whole lot.
