Possibly to avoid tampering charges for the stuff he tweets regarding free agents.

Lakers Remove Magic Johnson from Staff Listings

Posted: Jun 11, 2016

EL SEGUNDO -The Los Angeles Lakers have announced today that Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson has asked the team to eliminate his honorary title of Vice President, and to remove his name from the team staff directory in publications and other sources.

The change is being made in hopes of clarifying any confusion over Johnson's involvement with or representation of the team.

"Earvin will always be a revered and beloved member of the Lakers family, but he does not have a position or role with the organization at this time," said team spokesman John Black. "He is not an advisor or a consultant, and his opinions, comments and social media posts are solely his, and do not represent or reflect those of Lakers ownership or management. Hopefully this will eliminate any confusion over this issue in the future."

Sounds like the issue was trying to distance the team from some of his "interesting" tweets not really about tampering, either way it was needed

Ya he don't need the title, he is the greatest laker, and the greatest player of all time.

 Go get 'em Magic. Lakers need a headstart on recruiting KD or whoever is out there willing to pick up the mantle as the new face of the franchise.

I grew up watching Magic and do believe he is the greatest Laker of all time, if not the greatest player of all time.
I thought it was really cool that he had a VP role and was associated with the team.

That said, he was saying some stuff over the last few years that were un-VP like, and sometimes a bit troubling.
The Lakers are going into arguably one of their biggest and most sensitive free agency periods in their history.

They're intent with this move is probably to make sure Magic's comments don't affect their status with free agents.

My suspicion is that he'll still tweet stuff, and since he will always be associated and linked with the organization, even if it is unofficial, it will have some impact on some people.
