NBA projects the cap to be 102 million next year. Lower than originally projected. These MoZgov and Deng contracts will really bite us in the but next summer possibly.. and for years to come.

I believe we will be short of a max contract next summer. :/

NBA projectes the cap will slowly climb up to 110 by 2020. This isn't good.. Right?

So it's July and and cloudy do you guys think this Mozgov contract is dumping turds on my summer wheather?

The size of the max contracts decrease as well, so I don't really think it will be a huge impact. If we stretch Young and trade Williams, we'll have more than enough room.

Not really... between Nick and the expiring Calderon plus pick or 2 trade you keep whining about we're fine.
If we have to include 2nd round picks (like the one or two we just acquired) it should not be an issue at all to move people like Lou.

Dont need to stretch Young, i bet we can dump him using the 2nds we got from the Bulls. At 5.5 mil he's cheap in the current cap, not to mention there's a high chance he'll opt out so teams can look at him as an expiring.

Lou Will, as much as i detest him, shouldnt be dumped unless we can get a 1st rounder for him. If Marco Bellinelli can extract a #22 pick then surely Lou can get something similar or a bit worse.

But yea, this isnt a good look for us if either Mozgov or Deng falter. Better hope there's an amnesty during the next CBA renegotiation.

If the cap ends up being 102 mil (doubtful it will stay at that), Lakers will have $26 mil in cap space with $76 mil committed to next year. A 30% max deal will be $30 mil. However, these easy moves can be made to free up addition cap room.

1) Waive Tariq Black after this year (his salary is not guaranteed next year) - $6.6 mil cap savings
2) Package the 2nd round picks the Lakers acquired in the Jose Calderon trade to dump Nick Young (if he's around) and Lou Williams expiring contracts) - $12.6 mil cap savings

Those 2 moves alone frees up just over $19 mil in cap room giving the Lakers $45 mil in cap room which is enough for a 30% max (Westbrook?) and another significant $15 mil contract. Want room for 2 max then Lakers could do either:

1) Trade Randle ($4 mil), Russell ($5.5 mil), Nance Jr. ($1.2 mil) & waive Anthony Brown ($1 mil non-guaranteed) These are the most movable contracts the Lakers will have and probably the most movable pieces especially if the Lakers are targeting Westbrook and Blake Griffin (Just hear me out for this example). If for some wacky reason you can't find a trading partner on these deals then the Lakers can just decline their team options (highly doubtful but last ditch effort). - $1 mil-$12 mil cap savings

or

2) If you don't want to give up Randle or Russell then Jordan Clarkson's $12 contract is one of the best valued contracts in the NBA and for that reason is easily movable. - $12 mil cap savings

So basically, all this talk of not having cap space or not enough cap flexibility is non-sense. Lakers can have anywhere between $26 and $69 mil in cap space. We saw how teams like the GSW, Spurs, and Bulls were able to free up cap space in a jiffy to sign players and Lakers will be able to do that next year with ease if need be. Don't buy the hype, the sky isn't falling. Lakers will be able to do anything they want in FA next as long as the top FAs are willing to commit.

This is just a projection. This years was projected to be around 87 then 90, now it's locked in higher. Besides all this worry about future cap space is a fools topic. Durant is now signed up with a team that had none to start the offseason. If a team wants a player bad enough and he wants to play there cap space can be created. It's how we got Calderon

Everyone ia hoping mozgov is actually a productive player for the lakers.

But the expectations are very VERY low.
If he puts up 10/10 with average defense I think people will be happy.

If zubac look better than mozgov by December then people are not going to be happy.

Your $76 mil figure doesnt include Ingram and Zubac contracts which might add up to $5/$6 mil or so. Also there is a cap hold for roster spots for the minimum. So waiving Brown might save maybe 400k in cap space.

Moving Randle, Russell, Clarkson, Nance for nothing but future picks? Because you cant bring back contracts. Thats terrible and will leave the Lakers will very little depth.

In all likelihood, the Lakers will have 1 max slot for someone like Westbrook next offseason. A second wont be available just with Williams and Young plus draft picks trades. And any deal like Russell + Randle + future pick for DMC will eat into the cap space.

I dont know how realistic a Westbrook signing + 2nd star signing + trading Russell, Randle, pick for star trade would have been for the Lakers next offseason anyway but the transactions this offseason prevent that.
