Larry Nance, Jr. Describes Lakers Culture Last Year

"The way I put it is imagine going to work, imagine going to your cubicle and it's just a toxic work environment. There are guys around you that you don't necessarily see eye-to-eye with. Your boss is kind of demanding, it's just a drag going to work every day,” said Nance, Jr., describing an undesirable work environment. “Less gets done, you aren't as productive, there's kind of a bad attitude around.
“Then you go to an environment where the boss is flexible, you've got guys around you that you can talk and mess around with, you go to dinner after work and stuff like that, and it's makes time fly. It makes you really not dread going to work as much,” Nance, Jr. continued. “Granted it's a little different because we're in the NBA, but at least this summer I've really enjoyed going to the gym and seeing the faces and people that are with us now. That's kind of the culture change that's going on.”
“Since Luke [Walton] has gotten here, our culture has kind of changed. Now he is on the court working with us, and the assistants are on the court working with us, and kind of implementing in our game what they'd like to see in our offense,” sais Nance, Jr. “[Walton] just brings a whole new young, up-tempo, refreshing feel to everything.”

This is why last year's performances by all players are useless barometers — BS. I still maintain that he lost us more than ten close games singlehandedly, on purpose or not. Kobe lost us another five at least. 17 plus 15 is a theoretical 32 wins. Both being gone is substantial addition by subtraction. Add Luke and our young core's development, Ingram, Zubac. I still think we will surprise the league in a big way. Let's go!

That's not really surprising considering it was like a clown college at the best of times and things just snow-balled once Nick Young started taking control of the locker room.

Honestly, not thrilled Nance answered that question. It's not the first time he's commented about team mates past present or future, and at some point you have to start wondering if the problems he's seeing in the locker room aren't a little more about him than anyone else...
I'm sure everything is exactly as he says it is/was... I think we all know that... But saying it to the media is a little unprofessional.

Two things... First, I didn't know it was that bad... Secondly, Nance should talk about how much better it is now than complain about the last... Locker room talk should stay in the locker room... Little surprising & dissapointed...

I agree with Kilroy, whether true or not (most likely true), it's extremely unprofessional to blast last year's team like that.
There are a million ways to truthfully answer that question without throwing anyone under the bus.

One thing that is clear is that all the young core are easy targets for the media now....
With Kobe leaving, the pressure of beings kings of LA will be placed on them and the vultures will be out in full force. Last 3 or so seasons, with Kobe's decline/injury, they have been lucky not to really feel heat.

Post Kobe era i'm sure everything is different. Without Kobe around there is really no pressure on anyone right now but thats not going to last long and before you know it the pressure is back on so put on your headphones and enjoy the vacation pics hanging on your cubicle wall.

So which player that's no longer on the team is he talking about? Kobe? Hibbert? I know he previously said he learned so much from Bass and how much he appreciated him.

I think he's talking about D'Angelo and Nick Young.

IMO Kobe... I think he's made it pretty clear he's not the biggest Kobe fan.

Pretty obvious he is talking about Scott and also likely referencing to Kobe.
As for Young and Russell, they are both still a part of the team.

If you're referencing that old tweet thats kinda old news. He's been on kobe's sack for some time now.

It's Byron and his staff as a whole. Larry has praised Kobe over and over again via social media.

I don't think he should be talking at all. He is not good enough of a basketball player to have a voice. I guess he didn't learn anything from his Kobe debacle.

locker room was probably a joke the last 2 years. byron (brought in to make kobe happy), kobe, metta...not really the best veteran players you can look up to
plus you got guys like young and rusell.

I think its open knowledge among the team that Nick Young won't be brought back into the mix.

I agree. He mouthed off too much. Its one of those times when you just feel so good about your current situation that you didn't notice til the last minute that you said too much and said things that you probably shouldn't have.
But I guess its a fair assessment. There was no direction in last year's team. They tried to win, and then they sort of tried to develop the young guys but they also tried to build up Kobe's last year. It just can't be fun when you have a dictator who can't lead the team, and that attitude resonated throughout the locker room.

Eh, it's not like there was anything malicious behind this. Unprofessional is Shaq and Kobe going at it through the media. This just reads like an honest answer to whatever question he was asked -- something athletes get knocked for not doing enough of. If he wanted to rip anybody he could have named names.
Besides, it's not like he's saying anything we didn't already know/assume already. Byron sucked and was totally miscast coaching a bunch of youngsters. Kobe's retirement tour was a sideshow. Nick Young is a horse's ass. On and on. Now after treading water for the past few years we can finally start moving in the right direction again.
