I am guessing that we go on a late season run and he retracts unless Jeannie has Phil lined up and boots him. Not sure which of Phil or Jim is worse TBH.

I'm guessing it's going to be a non issue. Jeanie buss won't address it anymore during the season like she already stopped doing. At the end of the year there will be one statement by her saying franchise is headed in right direction and they want to keep moving forward. that'll be the last time the timeline is publicly discussed by the front office for the foreseeable future.

I think Lakers will explore superstar trades during the season and failing anything materializing, Jim Buss will honor his agreement and vacate his position with Kupchak carrying dual titles as GM and President of Basketball Ops going forward.

If they make playoffs (highly doubt it) jim will use it to retract his statement

As long as the young guys can show that they are making progression their development throughout the course of the season then everyone within the organization should be satisfied regardless of what the win loss column says at the end of 82 games.

I want him to stay. I can understand some logic behind his decisions, and now we are in pretty good situation going forward.

Mitch will stay, West Jr replaces Jimbo who will head up the new jock cleaning department. Phil proves this year to be a solid GM or risks going down as a two-three year bust, which is when he'll try hard to get in w Jeannie's Lakers... Hoping he does just well enough to stay in NYC. Mitch and West Jr is where it's at for me.

I voted that Jim will try to extend his own contract past 2016-17. I think we might do well enough to merit it, too. Family drama pending.

I keep hearing that Mitch and Jim are tied together. But maybe that's a Mitch position until it's clear that he would replace Jim as VP of Basketball Opps.

We'll see how this plays out as they're all still young, but I love how we've been drafting, I hope that if Jim leaves, we don't totally scrap our scouting department.

Mitch as VP and Ryan West as GM makes a lot of sense continuity-wise, but we'll have to see how much house cleaning Jeanie thinks is needed.

Mitch was groomed by Jerry West. It only makes sense that he'd be the one to groom West Jr to be the next overlord of GMs. Plus, dad might help a bit, too.

I don't think Mitch and Jimbo are tied together. Fans here think so but I don't hear it elsewhere. Kupchak has done great (despite Stern's basketball reasons!!!). He still brought us 2 titles with the Pau/Kobe roster. He has us primed with a rebuild core of potential young superstars via the draft. Jerry Buss loved Mitch. Why should he go?

I'd argue Mitch would've done even better without Jimbo cluttering his map. In Mitch I trust.

I'd move mitch to pres and have him share gm with West, as well.

I think Jim Buss will step back and in an effort to save face, put out some ridiculous statement like, "I am very pleased with the direction Mitch Kupchak has put this team in. Although my love as a part owner will continue, I am fully confident in Mitch Kupchak to lead basketball forward here in Los Angeles. Go Lakers!"

Mitch stays on, Ryan West gets an increased role.

Unless Jeanie sabotages it again, this is shaping up to be a huge feel-good season for the Lakers... I think even if we are only marginally better than we were last season, fans are still going to be pretty hyped.

So at the end of the day, I don't think anything changes...

Wins and loss should matter....i dont want to be another minn team and being in the lottery yr after yr. for over a decade. Yea they got 2 great young guys and solid core but no matter the personel they just keep on losing and i still think they miss the playoffs this upcoming season even with thibs at the helm.

Of course wins and losses matter... But we won because we had the best player(s) in the NBA at times. If you lose the talent, you lose. "No matter the personnel?" Our personnel consisted of broken down Kobe and Nash, and Mental Problems Howard, at best... At worst, pretty much just broken down Kobe... We lost exactly because of that, not in spite of it... Not sure why that even needs to be said at this point.

I mean, I feel like we've been through this about 700 million times at this point and I fail to understand why people continue to ignore logic and say it's Jim Buss' fault he didn't miracle us a winning team after Kobe blew his Achilles out...

It's also funny to me that when pressed those same people can only seem to point to some mediocre-ass players that Jim could have supposedly gotten, who wouldn't have done anything for us but perhaps keep us out of the lottery for the last 3 years...

Honestly, since the CP3 Veto... There hasn't been a single transaction that supposedly could have happened that would have satisfied the 'win now' crowd... So what exactly should Jim Buss step down for? Paying Kobe too much to retire a Laker? Not hiring Phil Jackson to be a fair weather, home-only coach?
Or are we going to be honest here and say 90% of the poeple hate him because they wish they were him.
Or they wish they could have banged his sister 20 years ago.

Jim should have stepped down after the byron scott hiring debacle, nevermind the 2 other failures at HC. People will buy into the excuse that ut was dr.buss call for mda but to me thats just him being a good dad and covering for an incompetent son. How many other execs couldve survived with the failures we've had over the last 3 yrs if said exec wasnt the owner? Id even go as far as saying if jim was in a different role and there was an exec serving under him that made these past hiring, jim would undoubtedly fire that exec after last yr.

Phil only had a yr and a half and had to clean up somebody elses mess....this mess we're in was caused by jim and mitch
