And when you thought things could not get worse, you go and ask Magic for help. Im really hoping that his involvement on the basketball side of things will be minimal or this will end in disaster.

Well, i think it means Jim and Kupchak will be out at the end of the season.

I really,really,really hope Magic won´t be the new GM come April. Like Michael Lucky has said above, i hope that his involvement will be minimal.

I doubt Magic is going to take on active role like GM. The guy is too rich and has too many outside ventures going on to want to get his hands dirty like that. More than anything else, I think he is going to contribute his basketball ideas and be more or less of a symbol for a new day for this team. This management knows it has no credibility with its fan base or the NBA circle. If they want to improve their image, they had to start from the top.

Pretty sure Magic loves Mitch. I don't think I've ever heard him say anything even remotely negative about him. I could have missed something...

What the hell is Magic going to advise Jeanie on? Anything Magic could tell her, she should damned well already know.

I've heard Magic bitching a lot about the record, etc... That said, I've never heard any clear direction he thinks the team should have taken beyond hiring Phil... So I have no idea what this means for the team.

The only thing I can think of is that Jeanie essentially hired another vote for getting rid of Jim... But Jim's still an owner, so I just don't really see what good it would do for her.

It does frankly seem like a distraction move...

What it doesn't do however, is provide what this team needs more than anything else right now... And that's some aura of prestige and invincibility. The perception seems to be that we are a disjointed, rudderless ship being run by a family constantly in-fighting... This reinforces that perception.

Frankly, I can't really think of a worse move Jeanie could have made if she was interested in running the Lakers for the long term.

It's a PR move for the removal of Jim and Mitch, any criticism or questioning from fans of her will be subdued due to magic. Magic due to this "role" will be able to get out infront if the media and speak on behalf of Jeanie and the front office .

You can't help but wonder if Jerry west hadn't gotten sick he might have been the one in this role instead of Magic.

Not if Jeanie wants to remove Jim, which is the only reason to bring on Magic. Jerry West has been the opposite of magic, a staunch defender of Jim.

Probably... But the problem with this is that as soon as Magic steps foot in the building, he's instantly the most likeable and accessible person in the front office... So while he may help her get Jim and maybe Mitch out, he's also going to be constantly waaaaay overstepping his authority, and there's not a whole lot Jeanie can do about it short of firing him, which will just destroy her in the court of public opinion.

Pretty sure this means "Phil's back, the engagement is back on!" too.

Basically, the Lakers just bought a bigger pair of clown shoes... This org is an absolute cartoon now.

I'm anticipating that what's about to happen is just like Jerry Colangelo and Sam Hinkie. Jeanie will enable Magic to the point Jim had no choice but to leave on his own accord without Jeanie having to fire him.

I support this decision. I am happy to have Magic back. I think this will be a great move that we will all love. We need him to be critical.

Maybe not this elitist board, but Magic still resonates with citizens of LA and the fans of the Lakers. He isn't a young, new face for long-term, but we already have Walton for that, so now we just need to get our image back what it was on the upper management level.

This move is encouraging to me that it happened not only before the offseason, but before the trade deadline as well.

Lakers are my basketball entertainment and it looks like we're about to enter a new chapter.

Frankly, we needed someone with any amount of panache to recruit free agents or recruit the next VP/GM. I'll wait and see on this, but it's better to have Magic on our side than to lose him to another team. You can say what you want, but PR and optics are important. To fans and free agents alike.
