Potential GM candidates?

Post#1 » by Spens1 » Mon Feb 6, 2017 3:00 am

Assuming this coup by Jeanie against Jimbo goes through and Mitch gets fired. Who would be the best candidate to take over.

Maybe we should consider pleading to bring Jerry West back.

At some point you have to accept that Jerry West as a full time front office member is not happening.

As far as Ryan West, I'm really not sure what qualifies him to take over the front office, hes only ever been involved in scouting right?

Anyway, since Jeanie and Magic are making the decision, I'm going to assume name recognitIon and star power are the top priority.

If Jerry West is just in the room (every now and then), his presence alone makes everyone else better. That should be the first move, regardless of who is hired as the everyday GM.

Does this sound like a person that is going to advise Jeanie to hire an unproven/relatively unknown Ryan West to be in charge? Same goes for Sam Hinkie, wont even get considered imo.

Read on Twitter

Sounds like someone who believes the rebuild starts and ends with attracting a free agent superstar, so whoever gets hired will have to have the personality and presence to get that free agent meeting and get them to buy into the vision. Not really going to be about their ability to draft well in the second round or find hidden gems or what have you.

Yeah definately do not want Magic Johnson. He'd be the type to trade our young stars for vets on a whim, or even worse. Be Billy King Mark II.

Sam Hinkie. He'd bring the Lakers up to speed, modernize the infrastructure of evaluating, maintaining, and leveraging assets. He also employs cutting edge approaches to the game, gaining a competitive advantage.

That would also improve our position in landing top free agents. Lamarcus Aldridge, although I wouldn't have wanted him anyways, explicitly stated how archaic the Lakers basketball program was.

Lastly, he's proven he can do what it takes to build a contender. Too often, the Lakers hedge. Hinkie goes all the way. That's what it takes to be great.

Why do you think this? Or are we just throwing all the old, former players under the same umbrella? What makes you think he's Billy King or Isaiah Thomas? What has he done or said that would make you think he had an impetuous management style?

All that may be true, but I like my GMs to be masters in the art of team building before all of the qualities you mentioned.

He may or may not have that skill.

Ryan West is clearly the guy. Son of legend, Jerry West. Ryan has been surrounded by the Lakers ever since he was a kid. He's been working in the FO for the past 10 plus years.

Ryan said he wants to be a GM one day, this is his chance. No one else knows and cares for the Lakers as much as him. (Age wise)

In today's NBA it's a moot point as far getting top talent via FA goes. Look at the last few "superstars" that have moved. They all go to "buddy's teams". Mickey Mouse could have been the Warriors GM and they still would have gotten Durant.

I'm not sure that to get a superstar we need a talented GM as much as we need one already on the team.

There is a different mindset in today's top players. All of them are looking to join up on a top 5 team over being the finishing piece to a younger team. The only way I see us getting one of them to to find a team that dissolving and looking to rebuild with youth through a trade.

I think the mark of a good GM in the future will be in making trades over getting FA's.

I think we need to add someone who has a different style than Mitch to the front office as the GM. To me, we need someone who has more of a magnetic personality and can relate to the younger players in this league nowadays. No knock on Mitch, who is a damn solid GM, but he is much more of a good basketball mind and an everyday needy greedy type of executive. He does all the things a GM is supposed to do, scouting, drafting, negotiating and all, but between him and Jim, our FO lacks a personality that players want to talk to and work with.

Nowadays, players don't want to be treated like employees, they want to be able to befriend the owner, GM and front office people. Mark Cuban is hardly the greatest basketball mind out there, but he made his team more attractive because he is such a fun guy to hang out with. Mitch is an old school GM living in a new world, and it's time we get someone who is more adapt to the new ways to take over the FO.

Magic seems like the kind of guy who would probably think with his heart rather than his head. He loves the lakers yes, but i could see him doing a move out of pure frustration toward certain talent or going for someone because they're amazing and overpaying.

Also he simply has no experience as a basketball GM or a front office in basketball that i know of

Unfortunately, the benefits of analytics, understanding of the CBA, both outside-the-box thinking and the simple commitment to do what it takes - all of those things have contributed to the Lakers at the bottom of the league. It's a known fact that our front office has been way behind.

It's not a surprise that the Warriors are helped by their location - they have some of silicon valley's best minds and resources.

It's a new age, a new era. All the advantages that helped the Lakers in the past don't really matter anymore.

It's the era of empowered stars and empowered data-driven decision-makers, who employ analysts/programmers/physicists who can gather and interpret information in creative ways.

We need young, bright minds who can bring an interdisciplinary and forward-thinking way to finding solutions to a problem.

Because we have many problems, including those at the helm who are responsible for the worst years of the history of the franchise.

New. Blood.

Lakers Rumors: Jerry West ‘intrigued’ by return to Los Angeles

Promote Kupchak (West's former protege) and promote Ryan West to GM. This should entice Jerry West to come back a consultant.

I think Magic will advise Jeanie this summer to move on from Mitch and Jim. Magic will suggust Jerry West.

Jerry West will take over basketball operations while his son, Ryan West, takes over the GM. That will happen.
