David Stern: We thought we could re-work Chris Paul-to-Lakers trade until Mitch Kupchak ‘panicked’

NBA commissioner David Stern – acting as New Orleans’ owner representative, he says – infamously vetoed a potential Chris Paul-to-Lakers trade in 2011.

But that didn’t close the possibility of Paul going to the Lakers.

The New Orleans Hornets (now the Pelicans and not be confused with the current Charlotte Hornets), Lakers and Rockets tried to rework the three-team trade that would’ve sent Paul to the Lakers, Pau Gasol to Houston and Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first-round pick to New Orleans. But talks fell apart around the time the Lakers dealt Odom to the Mavericks.

In fact, in the course of the weekend, we thought we could re-do the deal. We really thought that Houston would be ready to part with Kevin Lowry, and we had a trade lined up for Odom that would have gotten us a good first-round draft pick – not we, but my basketball folks. But Mitch Kupchak at the time panicked and moved Odom to Dallas. So the piece wasn’t even there for us to play with at the time. So that was it — just about what was good for the then-New Orleans Hornets.

Remember, Stern – roundly criticized for his handling of this episode* – has blamed the Lakers and Rockets for the lingering perception. This could just be him again trying to shift responsibility.

*Somewhat fairly, somewhat not. Owners veto general manager-approved trades often enough, and Stern was acting as New Orleans’ owner after George Shinn sold the franchise back to the league. But Stern had an agenda as commissioner. He never should have assumed such a large conflict of interest. What he did with the Paul trade was reasonable for an acting owner, but because Stern was also commissioner, it’s fair to question how much New Orleans’ interests and how much the league’s interests factored into the decision-making.

But let’s take Stern at his word – that he and the Hornets thought they could re-do the trade and send Paul to the Lakers. That doesn’t mean they were right. Maybe the Lakers and Rockets (who had Kyle Lowry, not the “Kevin Lowry” Stern named) were never going to part with enough to get Stern’s approval.

And maybe New Orleans didn’t properly convey its interest in still completing a deal. Perhaps, Kupchak acted reasonably by trading Odom to Dallas – for a first-round pick, a deal Mark Cuban would ultimately regret – rather than wait around for the Hornets, who eventually sent Paul to the Clippers.

The LaVar Balls on this guy. totally omitted the fact that he had given the NO GM total autonomy on trades to avoid a conflict of interest.

I remember him writing not so long ago that he had nothing to do with it lol... Oh well it is what it is. But just imagine what would have happened? Clippers wouldn't be a playoff team and they'd have no fans or very little - Kobe with another 2-3 chips amazing what one action can do through out life - it's amazing.

The issue is many including Phil Jackson saw a conflict of interest when the NBA owned the team. It's the main reason CP3 wanted out. Stern said the GM has full authority to make any trade, but then the owners, mainly Dan Gilbert who just lost LeBron made a stink. Stern went back on his word. Stern should have never said he had full authority. It slammed the championship window shut because there was drama between Pau, Lo and the Lakers.

I read that and it sounds like someone trying to put put a positive spin on the past simply to sweeten the vision of his future legacy! I always disliked Stern because i never felt he was truthful and i hope his legacy is forever tarnished.

one of the reasons it will forever be **** stern and **** dan gilbert. stern folded under pressure and gilbert whined about the lakers then turns around and creates his own superteam with the highest payroll in nba history.

the irony is that Gilbert and Cuban convinced Stern that the reason the NBA was in the middle of the lock out was because they needed to get a handle on parity in the league and Paul going to the Lakers would be counter productive in that regard. how did paridity work out David?

"Mitch Kupchak panicked"

Yeah sure.

The botched trade did not just rob us off Chris Paul but it also pissed off Pau and Odom. Pau took it more maturely while Odom felt more betrayed and threw a fit for good reason because he had just taken a pay cut to keep the repeat championship team together and the next summer he found out he was going to be traded and demanded a trade himself. His short list was Dallas and Miami and Mitch got a 1st out of Dallas. Odom's entire life went into a tailspin after that, which culminated in a drug OD.

**** Stern and **** his legacy cleaning attempts.

I wish I could compile all the conflicting stories hes said publicly about the trade.

"Tried to rework the trade" ----BS

How do you rework a trade with some who just took back your agreed deal?

The truth is HE panicked and overstepped his bounds, and has been making excuses for it ever since.

IMO the greatest testament to sterns legacy is that he had the forsight to let Silver take over, and I say that will all sincerity, as silver has so far been masterful.

That is the worst part of it right there. Dan Gilbert throws a tantrum about how parity will be ruined, but has no problems with signing LeBron James and trading for Kevin Love just a few years later and creating the most expensive super-team in NBA history.

So **** that hypocrite Dan Gilbert and his bull****.
