Josh Hart, Villanova, SG, 6-6, 210

The Big East player of the year as well as defensive player of the year averaged an impressive 18.7 points a game to go along with 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals. An average athlete by NBA standards, Hart does have good size and a solid 6-8 wingspan that will help him check both guards and forwards on the perimeter. He doesn’t have any elite skills offensively but he is an efficient scorer who shot 40% from three-point range on more than five attempts a game. NBA scouts say they are impressed with Hart’s toughness and nose for the ball on defense, which will serve him well at the next level.

Reaction: The Lakers moved back in the draft to take Josh Hart. He’s a very competitive player who plays the guard position.

Josh Hart is a versatile shooting guard with NBA-level size and length who does a bit of everything to help the team win. Hart is a very complete player, who’s best NBA attribute right now might be his jump shot (40.4 3p% last year). He’s a very efficient player, who’s added in some playmaking over time to his tough defense and mature style of play.

At 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds with a 6-foot-8 wingspan, Hart has solid size and length for the 2 guard position. He can guard multiple positions on defense with his smarts, tenacity and strength. Hart’s defensive and shooting ability gives him role playing potential as a 3-and-D guy right now, which gives him a high floor as a prospect.

While Hart is a solid athlete, he won’t be blowing anybody away with his explosiveness, quickness or overall speed at the next level. This does limit his potential in isolation situations, and might make him struggle in situations where he has to create on his own.

Hart is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none type prospect. He’ll need to hope his 3-point range translates to the longer line so that defenses have to run him off the line. Hart has a good work ethic and the maturity to find a niche at the next level — I think he’ll find a role for a team in time.

NBA comparison: Courtney Lee

2016-17 stats: 18.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.5 SPG, 51.0 FG%, 40.4 3P%, 74.7 FT%

luckily he won't have to create too much on his own.

also Courtney Lee comparisons excite me, that is the type of player we need next to Ball.

He looked good In the tourney from what I remember. Tough kid. Could be the lakers starting sg next season (Clarkson 6th man)

Having defenders is never bad.

Reminds me of an Eddie Jones type player

Why does he remind me of Chauncey. Listed as 6'5 but looks more like a stalky 6'3 guy in some clips unless he grew in college...uses his stocky frame well when driving, and just a good all around skillset. Could be a valuable role player? Maybe more?

Looks like a solid pick at 30.

He looks like a guy who can score in transition.

He does look like 6-3" rather than 6-5

Hey, non-lakers fan chiming in on this pick however I'm a huge Nova supporter and I will admit, I'm a bit jealous that you guys got my favorite player in the draft. He's a great player that's under the radar but Josh is a great kid. He plays with major heart no pun intended and he's probably one of the more efficient shooters in the draft. Solid 3&D for the Lakers and even though I have nothing but hatred towards the Lakers, I hope you guys treat Josh well and allow him to play a bit. In fact, I hope you guys start him. He'd definitely be an all rookie team member if given the right amount of minutes.

Definitely interested in seeing how the Ball/Hart back court would do especially if Nick ditches town.

Solid pick, very happy. Hope we keep Hart and Kuzma (who fits perfectly here). I'm not high on Thomas Bryant though but that's okay

16. Josh Hart
Villanova
Shooting guard
Big Board: No. 37
Stats: No. 8

Consensus: 1.2 WARP

One of the most productive players in college basketball as a senior, Hart has no statistical weaknesses, and he has strengths in terms of 2-point percentage and shooting.

Hart projects to a 3-and-D role in the NBA, and indeed his second-best comp is Danny Green. (Of course, his best comp is MarShon Brooks. The draft is hard.)

From Pelton's stat projections draft report.

Josh Hart is a good prospect for the Lakers. He is not the quickest but he hustles, play strong defense and knows how to shoot. 6'6" SG, Hart shot over 40% (46% as a sophomore) from long distance and that can extend out to NBA range as well.

Magic gets us another strong fundamental, defensive-minded, diving on the floor guy that can shoot the rock. I think he will be a great role player and a fan favorite.

Solid pick. Hopefully he will develop a good relationship with Lonzo in the Summer League.

Me too....perhaps his not too quick movements, not too athletic but very strong type player. Seems like bball IQ is also good.

It looks like the ideal fit next to Lonzo. Let's see how it pans out.

I just love how scrappy and tough he is. It also helps he makes big shots and is an NBA sized body. But his scrappyness, toughness, competitiveness is the thing I admire most.

Could easily see him starting this season.

Read multiple people describing him as the Malcolm Brogdon of this year's draft. I'll take that. If either he or Kuzma turn out to be valuable contributors, and Ball lives up to expectations, this will have been a great draft.

Happy with this pick as well. Best of luck.

""While Hart is a solid athlete, he won’t be blowing anybody away with his explosiveness, quickness or overall speed at the next level. This does limit his potential in isolation situations, and might make him struggle in situations where he has to create on his own.""

Kinda feel like you can say the same thing about Klay. He's turned into an alright player, most would agree.

Play to your strengths...do what you do well. There's only a handful of guys with everything going for them. Plenty of guys have great careers with a piece or two missing from their game.

can't wait for summer league! Good draft IMO. very excited.
