The 6’11 big man gives the Lakers another frontcourt prospect to develop, having a mixed bag of tools that could make Bryant an interesting talent. His massive wingspan - 7’6 with a 9.’5’’ standing reach - puts him in elite NBA territory.

That, along with his total physical profile, give him significant defensive potential which the Lakers desperately need at center. Bryant doesn’t have explosive athleticism, but he uses his length and size effectively to make up for it in all facets of his game.

Bryant also shows flashes of being a stretch big man, shooting 38.3 percent from deep on 1.8 attempts per game as a Sophomore. If it’s not floor spacing, he also has signs of being a great rim-running big man which should mesh well with the kind of uptempo team the Lakers envision

Bryant is one of the biggest players in this draft from both a length and strength standpoint. He’s 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan and a 9-foot-4.5 standing reach, along with a muscular 250-pound frame. The big man moves pretty well for his size, although he doesn’t have much vertical bounce.

Bryant made an impact at Bloomington by carving out position in the post, being active on defense and sprinkling in occasional 3-pointers. The youngster towered over most NCAA foes, however, and he won’t be quite as physically imposing in the NBA.
Bryant has a decent post-up skill set, but the NBA doesn’t value that as much as it did 10 years ago. He’s not going to command a ton of back-to-the-basket touches because he’s not quite crisp enough with the ball. Rather, he’ll do more damage in pick-and-rolls, pick-and-pops and quick duck-ins for one-dribble finishes.

His foot speed and footwork will be an issue on defense. Bryant will do alright against traditional centers in post-up defense, but he’ll get exposed away from the basket. Opponents will challenge him to guard ball-screen plays as much as possible when he’s on the floor. Bryant will find NBA success by bringing energy, finishing strong and working on the boards. His ability to step away from the hoop and shoot will keep him in the rotation.

NBA comparison: Roy Hibbert with a better shot

2016-17 stats: 12.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.5 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 51.9 FG%, 38.3 3P%, 73.0 FT%

Oh great. We just missed Hibbert so much we took a player whose comp is him.

All jokes aside, welcome to the lakers. I wanted Ike from ucla. But this guy is alright I guess. Zubac needs a backup

He's freakishly long and hustles. About as much as you can hope for in the second round.

Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosiers!

Thomas Bryant is probably 3 or 4 years away from helping an NBA team but he was once projected to be a top 10 pick. Tons of potential and he always brings intensity and effort but it looks a lot more difficult for him than it should be. I think he needs help developing and Tom Crean failed to turn him into the lottery player that he could have been. Really happy to have him in LA. I'll be following his career in the G-League.

6'10" with 7'6" wingspan that hustles. I see a common theme with Magic's picks. They have to hustle and play defense or be a special talent. As for TB, he will run the fast breaks with Ball and when he gets the 3 point shooting down, he will be a valuable asset for the team. A good guy to get minutes and grow in D-League in the next 1-2 years.

As a 6'10" guy, TB shot 73% FT and hustles for loose balls. Solid pickup at #42.

Yeah, that website is clearly useless. Bryant is nowhere near a Roy Hibbert type. Bryant can actually shoot a basketball.

Hopefully TB will do the boxing out, rebounding, Shot blocking and Hustle plays.

If Julius leaves in a trade or does not get a big $

Lakers need more Hustle guys to go with Zubac and Nance JR.

Rebounders and guys who will do the tough work.

Hey, last time we got a Bryant.....It worked out pretty well. So good start already, in my book.

Seems like a great late pick. Late picks IMO are about 2 things: A)Find a guy who does 1 thing (that you desperately need) really well. A great 3-point shooter. A defensive specialist...something like that. Or B) Get a guy with the physical gifts, and see if you can get lucky, and have him put it all together.

I think we went with B on this one. If the guys gets it all to work, he'll be a beast. But if he had any of that beast already....he wouldn't be going #42. So we took a risk. Fair enough. Welcome to the Lakers Mr Bryant. Best of luck!

My favorite part of Bryant's game is that he is fluid enough to put up controlled 3's in an uptempo system. We see Brook get shots up, but he is a snail with his shot. We will be so much faster when Bryant gets on the court.

Disappointed we haven't brought him up - I'm frustrated with Lopez. Hoping we deal him -

Yeah. Any hopes of resigning Lopez has dissipated fast.

Lakers have to see if they can get some value back in a trade but I dont know what you can do without getting an expiring salary back or a players they really want in DMC or PG. At this point, I think the Lakers use Lopez to start then give most minutes to TB and Randle when we go small.

I'm not sure why we play Lopez so much and Bogut at all. Bryant and Zubac have both shown some skill at the "G" level and it would be great to let them teeth at the NBA level. It's not like this team is going to the playoffs. It's a development season so why don't we develop?

All of that said. We may be holding both of them back a little. There is a possibility that both Randle and Lopez are traded if the 2 Max guys stuff is real. We'd need them both then. If they are playing in the NBA and having success teams might start asking for them to get rid of Deng as toss ins.

Is this it?

Will TB finally get good minutes for the Lakers? I would love for him to start rebounding and making 3s to shore up his spot as the starting center over Lopez.

Any trade involving Lopez has to be expiring. So in terms of a future roster, a trade doesnt really matter. If Laker brass wants to try out Bryant and Zubac at possibly the cost of some wins, they should just sit Lopez and do it.
