Semi - OT Pau Gasol to the Lakers 2008

Post#1 » by theman » Tue Jan 9, 2018 9:37 pm

Am I misremembering something.

As I seem to recall. When the Lakers traded for Gasol in '08 the reason they were able to fit him under the cap was because they used the Disabled Player Exemption granted because of an injury to Andrew Bynum.

Can any one fill in some of these details for me? Thanks.

Pretty inexcusable to forget the trade worked financially cause of Kwame Brown.

Yep, it was Kwame ($9.1M), Crittenton ($1.28M), Aaron Mckie ($2.5M) for Pau ($13.7M).

Ahh.. And who can forget the famous European Vacation with Kobe Pau and Mitch over the previous summer, where they "never discussed a trade"... Good times.

So the disabled player exemption was not used to facilitate this trade?

Didn't the Lakers use it in the early 2000's to bring in someone?

Didn’t they have to bring back somebody out of retirement to meet salaries?

What about the second rounder that was Marc Gasol?

Pau Gasol after the trade, insisted the Lakers Front Office to take their rights back. It was 200.000$ but Lakers refused to pay to for it

Is there a source for this or mere conjecture?

Pau Gasol in an TV interview about his brother. I'll try to find it

Well you can't just take back rights to a player you traded so I'd love to see the context of how he said it.

Found it. I made some mistakes

Pau Gasol the night Marc was drafted, asked Chris Wallace (Memphis GM) to pay for Marc ($500K) and take the money from his salary if possible or if necessary because he knew he was to be really good.

He says also that he reminds Wallace that moment everytime they meet.

Marc Gasol was the key prospect in the trade. We new it and so did Memphis. He had won like 7 player of the week awards in the toughest European league at the time of the trade. He would have been a lotto pick if he came out a year later. It’s so ridiculous to hear all the whining throughout RealGM with no knowledge of Marc Gasol the prospect.

Forget it. How many titles has Marc hoisted? Pau was the PERFECT sidekick to Kobe, we went to 3 straight finals, and won 2.

We won that trade. Always have....always will. Marc's a nice player, but that got Memphis jack-all.

Replace Marc with Bynum (who was injured through most of our playoff runs) and he would have been a nice bridge from the post Jackson years until now.

Return to Los Angeles Lakers
