Projecting the Lakers cap room

So now that the lakers are seemingly back in the 2018 sweepstakes with Clarkson off the books, there’s been a lot of questions about what this means for getting two max free agents or even keeping Randle.

I figured it would be helpful to start a thread to centralize this discussion where a new tool was introduced to everyone called the capulator. Everyone should check it out, let’s you choose what cap holds to renounce, players to stretch, and options to decline to see how it affects the cap.

Basically, we can keep Randle if Lebron/PG take a combined pay cut of 8 million per year, correct? PG and Lebron's maxes combined to around 66 million....if they combine to 58 million instead we have the 12 million needed to not renounce Randle...do I have it right?

Got it working.

So.

Waived Deng, Ennis.

Re-sign Lopez and Randle for combined salary of 31 mil. Sign max PG13. Still got 10 mil left. Signed Belinelli for 14/2

Ball/Caruso
PG13/Hart
Ingram/Marco Belinelli
Kuzma/Tolliver
Lopez/Randle/Zubac/Bryant

I could have been way off, but that's how it looks to me.

LeBron wipes his ass with $4 million. But, he also said he was never going to take another pay cut after Miami. So ... ?

Their's do combine for 66. Stretching Deng and waiving Ennis while giving Caruso 1yr vet minimum puts us at 58 mil.

So it's either more support for PG + Randle FAs or PG+LBJ but no role players and no Randle.

Renouncing Randle gets us at 70 mil and leaves us with 5.5 mil in contracts. Enough for players like Tolliver.

This is why I do not like getting LBJ. No depth after first 7 players

Ball/Caruso
PG13/Hart
LeBron/Ingram
Kuzma/Tolliver
Bryant/Zubac

edit - ye go for lbj. changed my mind

This is off topic somewhat but can someone link me to how it works to re-sign your own player vs them becoming a FA? What is the benefit of them staying with the team that drafted them? I thought it was like 10%higher salary and an additional year under bird rights or something but I couldn’t find exactly what I was loooking for.

Talking with a Knicks fan about what the Knicks can offer porzingis to re-sign even though he hates the Knicks

Ideally

- We stretch Deng
- Sign our two max players
- Don't bring back Lopez and instead bring back Randle

I think that should work in theory at least assuming we renounce Lopez.

A team with bird rights can sign a player up to 5 years with 8% annual raises. That’s the only way to sign a player to a 5 year deal and it’s one of only two ways to give a player 8% annual raises. Otherwise it’s limited to 5% raises

We’d have to renounce Randle and he would have to take a huge paycut.

Thank you! So he could sign 5 years $148Mm with the Knicks and be capped at 4 years $108Mm if he leaves ... roughly . Greatly appreciated

I think if Randle signs his QO for next season we can sign PG and LeBron to the max then sign Randle to a new contract after... And still have around a mil to play with...

Yeah...he did say that, but I honestly took it more as "I'm not going to take a paycut in Cleveland"...with a straight F U to Gilbert as in Im not taking paycuts to have you pay less taxes. I definitely think IF Lebron believes that Julius is an important piece, he would take a pay cut....Honestly though, he probably would rather bring some of his buddies along if he's going to take a paycut.

We should also probably calculate a max contract for Ingram in two years

Depth will definitely be an issue, but I think without Randle and no paycuts, we can hopefully sign a better piece than a Tolliver with that 5 million....the FA market isn't all that hot next year. But yeah, this is actually another reason i'm glad we have another pick to play around with....and the Denver second. Hopefully we can add atleast another rotation player with those picks.

I think the biggest thing this summer will be ensuring we get verbal commitments from these max players.. PG.. Lebron.

We can't stretch Deng and then strike out in FA, that would just be stupid. Only stretch him if we need the money for PG and Lebron. I'd be perfectly fine with keeping Deng another year if we strike out. He'll be an expiring contract next summer.

when you say paycut are you saying he actually gets a minimum or he takes a 8 mill extension instead of a 12?

yup...if anyone is going to take paycuts its going to be superstars heading into their 2nd and 3rd big contracts, not the 24 year old trying to get his first.
