Luol Deng Extension Watch

As we inch closer to the offseason, we also get closer to some tough decisions on players that we have come to be fond of. Specially if we sign two FA's...

One of those players is not Luol Deng, BUT if you remember from Eric Pincus' piece back in November(link below); it might be in the best interest for LA to give him an extension under the current CBA rules.

Johnson and Pelinka may try to find similar trades but with fewer teams flush with cap space, the market to dump contracts may get even tighter. The solution for the Lakers may be a loophole in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement.

As of July 7, Deng is eligible for a three-year extension. Given the need to get him off the books, why would the Lakers add on to his contract?

The answer is the league's stretch provision, which allows for players to be waived with their contracts paid out over twice the length of the remaining deal, plus one season.

With the $36.8 million owed to Deng over the next two, the Lakers can stretch him out to $7.4 million over five years, which would open $9.8 million in additional cap space in July.

That isn't quite enough to get to two max slots, putting the Lakers at about $57.3 million in space.

That's where a Deng extension can help, with the caveat that any additional salary doesn't have to be guaranteed. By adding three years to his deal with no extra money guaranteed, the Lakers would have the ability to stretch Deng's salary over 11 total years, at $3.3 million a season.

Not so crazy after all. It might even be smart.

Or it might be completely unnecessary. We don't know. There's still time to figure it out...But as we get closer to offseason signings this thread is dedicated to the watch of this wonderful WTF loophole.

The only way they would even consider doing that is after two max Free Agents were committed to the Lakers already. So right now there really isn't any reason to stretch his contract. Not to mention the lakers are only a year away from Deng's contract becoming an expiring this summer. Deng's contract would be far easier to trade in the summer of 2019.

This would actually be pretty brilliant and the Lakers should do it before the NBA makes a rule change that prevents this.

The only caveat is that Deng would have to agree but who's turning down free money?

The entire league knows we got the space to get 2 max cats and a plethora of young talent to fill in around the stars and to use as trade fodder in a pinch. Teams cant hold us hostage on trying to demand 2 1sts and other young goodies for taking Luol Deng off our books. Heck we COULD do a Luol Deng + CLE 1st for a trash contract expiring (say 15-16mil) stretch that, and we turn our cap hit from 7.4m to 3-3.4m all at the cost of a late 1st. Which imho is a WAY more attractive option than extending and then stretching Deng. Basically that 1st rounder helps us save ~35m over the course of the 11 years.

How much more help LBJ/PG13 gets depends on how big of a trim theyre willing to take on year 1 on the Lakers. If we can a good 3rd wheel to join them (which can either be Randle or renouncing him and signing someone else) teams could be fighting each other to help us facilitate as long as we're willing to trade CLE 1st or our future 1st.

If you're a tanking team, whats another year of Deng if youre also dumping a 1 year trash contract on us, as long as they get a 1st.

If i were another team, i'd demand a future Laker 1st and bet on the LBJ/PG13 project not working out and praying for a nice pick.

That's another good option.

But I'd rather target a player with a two year deal, 2nd year not fully guaranteed so we could stretch over 5 years at lower per year cap hit

Other than Omer Asik i cant think of any other players out there with a big 1st year and 2nd year small buyout. I mean sure that'd be ideal, but the most important part is that we're basically selling a 1st rounder (and likely more) for 1 bad 18.8m year of Deng.

Again, Deng + Assets (whatever they may be) for a hypothetical garbage Player X with a 20mil expiring or 2 years 20mil left on his deal, we stretch that 20m/5 and get a smaller cap hit of 4mil vs 7.6m from Deng.

Adding 3.6m to the pot (9.7m) to whatever we have after renouncing everyone and signing LBJ/PG13 to their respective maxes, gives us 13.3m to offer to a 3rd FA

That could be Randle or a Noel. If either/both LBJ/PG13 are willing to take haircuts it could be a legit serious 3rd wheel.

Ideally, we get the Hawks, Suns, Kings, etc to take on Deng in exchange for draft picks. Attach our 2019 1st (top 5 protected) and the Cavs 2018 1st and we just might be able to get rid of him. Those teams with cap space this summer are trash besides the Pacers so they will be looking to build their core of young guys.

Easier said than done of course, but it's possible one of these garbage teams might take Deng on for two draft picks.

The Lakers' Nowhere Man plays games nobody sees, on a court that doesn't exist, in a world nobody understands.

Before every Lakers game at Staples Center this season, Luol Deng shows up on time, sits in front of his corner locker, talks strategy, tells jokes, full of life, the picture of health, preparing as if he is going to play.

But he won't play. He won't sit on the bench. He won't even step on the court. The uniform that hangs crisply and tauntingly in his locker will remain untouched; he instead wears the baggy sweats of one who never leaves the house.

When the Lakers run out for the game, their Nowhere Man retires to a training room to pretend.

Good story. There was another story Rob is reaching out to Deng after the LA Times story to find a solution. Hope it works out for both sides.

I feel Deng priced himself out if the market. And now he is using the treadmill to simulate playing in the game.

My target would be Christiano Feliciano $24.15 over the next three years excluding the current season. This stretched over seven years $3.45 against the cap versus Deng at $7.36 over the next five years (saving $3.9 against the cap this coming season and the following season if we don’t go all in this coming summer).

I don’t know his value on the court to the Bulls. I think a single FRP could cover the gap in salary cap value ($12.65 M). If the Lakers aren’t in love with whomever is available this summer it could be offered for the Cleveland FRP. However, I think cap space will remain high at the draft then drop in value by August 1st. If Chicago can’t sign anybody and remains under the salary floor, then the oppportunity cost of the cap space drops to zero. The real expense is limited because they have to spend to the salary floor; cash could be included to Chicago as well.

I say let's extend him and let him go, I saw this option a while ago and I loved it.

We get out of this horrible deal and free up the cap

Extension would not be the right move. There is a trade partner out there, we just have to be willing to lose something/someone.

I would be surprised if the Lakers went this direction. 11 years of paying Deng.. no thanks.

The only thing extending, is my anger towards Jimmy. This will hang over his head. Glad Jeanie won the battle over control.

the money isn't solid, its all a team option. this just allows the Lakers to have less of his money counting against the books.

it'll. be 3.5 million instead of 7.5 million
