Kobe: If a player needs convincing to play for Lakers, 'he ain't the one'

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/22467753/kobe-bryant-says-los-angeles-lakers-franchise-special-requires-certain-personality"You know, the thing about this franchise is that you shouldn't need recruiting to come in it," Bryant said. "It takes a special person to want to play for this franchise, and take the pressure that comes along with playing for this franchise. The pressure of following Magic [Johnson]'s footsteps, myself and the dynasty that we've had, it takes a special person to do that.
"And if I need to convince you come here, to carry that legacy forward, then you ain't the one to be it."
AMEN!

He's not wrong.
As long as the front office can show that their crap is together, Luke can show how they'd be effective on the court with the young guys, and a trip through the facilities, that's all that should be needed.

Except these days you have to make a pitch or you won't get anyone of note to play for you.

This is 110% true. The young guns expect you to please them now. They don't care about legacies. They want to be treated like kings. That is why the league is full of drama queens now.

He's just doing his part to raise the stock of the brand. And it should entice competitive people in position to strike.
West, Mikan, Wilt, KAJ, Magic, Worthy, Kobe, Shaq... Who next?
Durant? Leonard? AD? Giannis? Being a Laker legend isn't for everyone...
Lonzo's jersey will follow soon after LBJ's or whomever we bring in. And Ingram's. And Kuzma's.

I agree with Kobe. Folks always say it's the name on the front that matters not the name on the back, if that's the case then the lakers reputation speaks for itself. There is a ton of pressure to play here and only a handful of guys in the league would probably be able to handle it

I think it is important to note that....this is a pitch to play for the Lakers. Pretty much if you're not up for the challenge then don't bother. It's a challenge to the upcoming FA's competitiveness.

For short...its different when you win with some other smaller franchise. To be the one leading the way to bring back the luster of the Laker franchise is better for your legacy rather than joining a superteam.

Kobe's comments are spot on.
And I agree with Ty. His comments ARE a pitch.
And yes. As the time approaches for free agency, Rob and Magic will of course have to do their part in telling the FAs what the franchise is all about.
At the same time, the message to FAs is that they ARE being wooed by a special franchise, with great history, with 16 championships, with the greatest fans on earth, and that they'd be accepting a huge responsibility by putting on the P&G.
And if that's not for you, then don't come here.

This strategy has been working out well for the past number of years.

Yeah. I'm glad we didn't get D12, Melo, and Aldridge the last few years.

Do you have proof of what Kobe's pitch was before? It seems like folks here have a problem with past laker legends speaking their minds. This franchise has proven time and time again that they can put together a winner in due time. How many other franchises have won dominated in the same fashion? Yes we are going thru a drought but that's no reason to be beggars. In due time the stars with the right mindsets will come.

Actually the lakers were doing the opposite and putting up big ass banners for guys like Dwight freaking Howard. Do you know how embarrassing that was as a laker fan? Forget begging guys to come play here, you do your due diligence but desperation should never be associated with this franchise
