Should Pelinka be in talks for EoY?

Post#1 » by LALifer49 » Wed Mar 14, 2018 1:16 pm

Here are the moves he has made since the offseason.

Traded Dlo and Mozgov for Lopez and 1st round pick
Traded 28th pick for 30th pick and 2nd round pick
Drafted Kuzma and Hart, both who look like great picks, Kuzma will be all rookie team (again drafted 27) and Hart has played better than anyone drafted before him besides Kuzma until at least the 23rd pick (anunboy) and arguably even better than him.
Drafted Lonzo #2 (not as noteworthy b/c consensus, but still looks like solid pick)
Signed KCP to 1 year deal
Traded Clarkson and Nance for IT, Frye, and 1st round pick.

Lakers record will be significantly improved from last year. To sum it up, he traded DLO Nance Clarkson Mozgov (3 yr 48 million) for Lopez and IT each coming off over 20 ppg seasons, and 2 1st round picks. His trades have been major successes.
His drafting has also been a major success, and he has found a lot of talent at the end of the 1st round.
He did this while clearing a lot of cap space.

I know Magic played a big part, but Pelinka actually holds to GM title.

Daryl Morey, Kevin Pritchard, Dennis Lindsey and Danny Ainge have all faired better this year, but Rob Pelinka should be in the top 5 discussion, no doubt.

He's definitely in the discussion. There were some risky moves like trading Dlo to get Ball and his blowhard dad. Then trading Nance who was well liked for IT and his bad hip and worse defense. It's been paying off so far.

So real question: How much say does Magic really have in personnel decisions compared to Pelinka?

Pelinka doesn't even think about a Personnel move without Magic.

Pelinka is the cap expert AND the guy with all the agent connections here. He's bigger than Magic's right hand.

I definitely think he's done excellent in Stage 1 of the rebuild but I dont think you can give someone EOY. Hinkie probably deserved one. You get the EOY when the fruits of your labor are recognized from the rebuild

whether he's in talks for EoY this year or not is irrelevant, because he definitely won't be getting it this year. next year is his chance though, depending on how free agency goes. He'll also earn some points for the moves he made this year year when next year's discussion comes around..

At any rate I think we've established ourselves as among the best front offices, we've done great in every phase from drafting, to trading/talent acquisition, and to accomplishing our goal of creating cap space while doing it, and we have made some difficult decisions, next test will of course be the fa period.

He's without a doubt in the top five. He's made some impressive moves while building for the future with agents and cap space. If he could've gotten Deng out of here on the trade deadline without taking anything bad back, then he would without a doubt win EoY.

If he can do the following this summer, he'll be off to a great start for next year to win EoY.

-Move Deng without taking anything back
-Sign PG and Lebron
-Retain valuable players for league minimums / MLE
-Draft / trade well this summer.

The KCP deal was a bad deal. Was and is a dead end. Clearly Rob’s move - “manna from heaven” was embarrassing.

It was also a move that obviously depressed Jordan Clarkson’s value. Should have been able to get more out of him. He was considered a steal of the draft, and resigned to a reasonable contract. Ended up a contract we had to clear at a cost, instead of selling high.

The Larry Nance Jr. and Julius Randle situation wasn’t handled well either. Paying 1-2 mil over the next two seasons for Nance or paying at least 10 times for Randle ? Or lose him for nothing? Bad asset management.

People don’t really win EOY for creating future cap space yet to bear fruit. Probably a lock next season if they strike gold in free agency.
